How to Categorize a wikiHow Article

When creating a new wikiHow article it is very important that the article be categorized. Categorizing an article makes it easier for readers to locate the article.

[edit]Steps

  1. Find an uncategorized article or start a new article, which you will need to then categorize.
  2. Think of what your article is about. There are 19 general categories (Categories are listed below).
  3. Figure which of these categories your topic is most about. Then drill down to the sub-categories and sub-sub categories to assign it to the most relevant lower level category. If no lower level categories are appropriate assign it to the upper category level.

Guided Editor Method

  2. Select the general category from the left pop-down menu.
  3. Select the sub-category from the right pop down menu.
  4. Add a second category (if applicable) by clicking on the "Add another category" link.
  5. Save your changes.

Advanced Editor Method

  1. Open the article for editing using the advanced editor.
  2. Move your cursor below the Introduction and type the name of the article's category as shown: [[Category:Your Category Name]].
  3. Be sure that the spelling and capitalization you use exactly matches the spelling and capitalization used in the categories list or your article will not be properly categorized.
  4. Save your changes.

[edit]Tips

  • If you are unsure about which category your article best fits in you can ask someone else, including any of the administrators to help you.
  • If you have an idea for a new sub-category, visit the Category forum and suggest it. Remember that generally more than 5-7 articles are needed to make a new sub-category.
