How to Contribute to wikiHow
If you'd like to join the community of people helping build the world's largest how to manual, here are some fun and useful things you can do whenever you have some spare time.
[edit] Steps
- To report something that needs immediate administrator attention, please post it on our Administrator Notice Board.
- Copy edit an article. "Copy editing" means fixing spelling and grammar errors, as well as improving the "tone" of an article. If you need to know more about the "how-to voice" and the preferred format for wikiHow articles, check out our Writer's Guide.
- Expand a "stub" article. Some articles are incomplete and need help to reach their full potential. If you know something about the topic, feel free to help steer any stub towards a more useful, full-length article.
- Overhaul a troubled article. Some articles need significant cleanup to meet our quality standards. You should feel free to do anything you can to lift these articles up, including blanking the existing content and starting fresh.
- Edit any other existing page. Feel free to edit any page you find; no need to ask anyone for permission. The list of new articles is a good place to start since most new articles need multiple contributors to reach their potential. You can also find older articles by browsing categories, or by selecting the "Random Page" option from the "Toolbox" list. Add a tip, add more steps, insert a warning or explain things just a little bit better. Anything you can do will help.
- Start a new article if a search reveals your topic is not already covered, please add it to wikiHow. Maybe you know how to Make a Small Boat, Play Pinochle, Claim Legal Guardianship, or Polish Rocks. Share your unique knowledge with other users. Don't worry if your writing isn't perfect; other writers will be able to edit and improve your work.
- Answer a suggestion. Every day, wikiHow members suggest articles on topics they need help with. If you know how to do anything that other users need to know more about, this is your chance to pitch in and help. Be sure to check first, though. Some suggested articles have already been written. Do a search.
- Patrol Recent Changes wikiHow changes every minute and not all the changes are helpful. You can delete vandalism and other malicious changes by comparing edits by pressing "diff" on all recent changes and then editing appropriately or adding {{stub}}, {{copyedit}}, {{format}}, or {{accuracy}} templates to the pages that need further help. For more information on these tags, visit this page. Mark any acceptable edit as "patrolled".
- Remove vandalism and nonsense when you find it. Look in the page history of any page to find old, better versions of pages that haven't been vandalized.
- Weave links on any article to knit all of wikiHow together.
- Re-format an article. All pages need to be in the form of clear, concise instructions in the Steps, Tips, Warnings format as described in the Writer's Guide, but some pages are not yet in format. Your editing can help get them there.
- Add photos to an article. You can do the steps listed and take step-by-step pictures, or you can find general photos with the Find Free Photos link in the left column on every page.
- Categorize an uncategorized article. Read how to categorize here.
- Do accuracy patrol. Find inaccurate articles. Fact check and research them. Cite your sources.
- Speak up at the Forums. Use the forums to chat about wikiHow, meet other wikiHow authors, or ask for help on how to use wikiHow. To chat in real time use the IRC chatroom.
- Add related wikiHow articles to pages. This helps make wikiHow more of a network than a simple collection of pages. If you need help with this, go here to learn more.
- Help start a wikiHow in your language.
