How to Search wikiHow
Search wikiHow before writing any article. A quick search will save you time in the long run because duplicate articles cannot be kept and will be deleted or merged. If there is already an article on How to Get a Boyfriend, for example, you will help the readers most by adding to the article we already have and not starting a new one.
[edit] Steps
Using the Search Bar
- Type your keyword(s) in the text box at the top right side of
the screen. Click the Search button.
- Check the central area of your screen. A list of titles should appear.
- Look at the column on the left of the screen, under 'More Search Results. This is where you will find the google results for wikiHow articles. This will sometimes be a better list than the main list.
- Click on the best result. If you do not get a good result, try searching a different term. If nothing came up under rabbits, try rabbit and you may get an entirely different set of results. If nothing comes up at all, check your spelling.
Using Categories
- Go the Categories page.
- Click on the top-level category most likely to contain the article you are looking for.
- Click on the appropriate subcategory. You will now see a list of articles within that subcategory. Featured articles, if any, will appear at the top of the list, in a green box. Articles needing the most attention will appear at the bottom under Articles That Require Further Editing.
Using Mediawiki Search
- Type thisisnotaword or any other nonsense term into the search box.
- Look under the blue bar labeled No page text matches to find the search box.
- Replace the nonsense word with the term you are seeking and press search. You may get a list of Article title matches and a list of Page text matches.
Using Related wikiHows
- Try this option if nothing above has worked.
- Search for articles on topics similar to the one you are hoping to find. For example, if you are searching for ewlegy, but have misspelled it and therefore can't find it, you can search for obituary and you will find the wikiHow article on How to Write a Eulogy listed on the side bar.
[edit] Tips
- Take the express train to the appropriate category. Locate an article on a similar topic and look at the breadcrumbs above. For example if you do not know where to find our school supplies area, you can search for pencil bag, and find the article Organize Your Pencil Bag. Open the article and look at the breadcrumbs above to find where on the category tree such articles will fall. (Home>Categories>Youth> School and Homework > Organizing School Materials).
- When looking for policies, guidelines, userpages, or etc., try adding a prefix for a better result (such as User:Pie, or wikiHow:Guide).
[edit] Warnings
- Articles needing further editing, if any, will appear at the bottom of your final list. Any article here will need very likely need copyediting, formatting, or significant improvement of some kind.
