wikiHow is a carbon neutral website. Becoming carbon neutral means that we have obtained a carbon offset to balance out any greenhouse gas emissions we create by running our website and back office operations. Learn more about carbon offsets and how they work at the wikiHow page on How to Buy a Carbon Offset or the Wikipedia page.

We worked with Carbonfund.org to calculate and offset the carbon emissions produced by running wikiHow, including the following:

  • Computers/Servers: 25414.98 lbs (11552.26 kg) of carbon - 11 dual 64 bit AMD Opteron production servers, 2 smaller development servers, and a few other computers in various locations.
  • Air travel: 6,706 lbs (3553.2 kg) - 20,000 miles (32,190 km) of air travel.
  • Office: 2,678 lbs (4,408 kg) - The electricity and heating use for our office.
  • Car: 1,363 lbs (619 kg). 1,750 miles (2800 km) of driving per year.
  • Train travel: 7,128 lbs (3,240 kg) - Chris and Vu commuting via train from San Francisco to Menlo Park, CA.
  • Jack riding bike to work: 0 lbs of carbon!
  • Total Carbon Footprint : 51,414 lbs (23.37 metric tons) of carbon per year. The full carbon footprint calculation is available here.

After calculating our carbon footprint, Carbonfund.org was able to offset our carbon emissions by funding a variety of projects such as renewable energy, methane digesters, reforestation, and other projects. At the end of the day our 51,414 pounds of carbon emissions will be balanced out by a comparable amount of carbon reductions.
