Please note that when transforming a bitmap image (versus a shape or path), it becomes slightly less sharp each time you commit a transformation. Therefore, performing multiple commands before applying the cumulative transformation is preferable to applying each transformation separately. You can also set interpolation method for Free Transform command by using menu Edit � Preference � General for Windows or Photoshop � Preference � General for MacOS at Image Interpolation drop-down box (see also Photoshop Image size for Interpolation method in detail).

I'm not going to take you through how to mask with channels in great depth as there is already another tutorial covering this. What I will be doing is demonstrating how to use the calculations command to create a mask with less work brushing out a chosen channel. First you will need to take a copy of the blue channel (or which ever has the strongest shadows and outlines) by dragging the channel over the "create new channel" icon second from right in the channels window. Next invert the channel using ctrl+I.
You can also assign a Function Key to this command to quickly apply the Trim command. Either way it provides a great alternative to using the Crop Tool each time you need to cut the canvas away from your image.
