Draw out a smallish shield select the pen tool and instead of going to "fill path" go to "stroke path". Use the rectangle marquee tool and make a small cross for the middle of the shield. Now rotate your shield and place at the end of the knife.

This keeps will merge all the layers while keeping the layer style applied. If you try to merge the top layer with the layer below when a style is applied, the merged image will obtain that style and look strange) so click on the layer above the newly crated layer and merge down. Then repeat until you are left with just the layer with the knife on and the blade.

Step 1: Begin by drawing shapes for the knife. I was looking at a pocket knife when doing this. Here is the psd file if you suck at drawing.

Next select the reflected gradient tool, with FFFFFF for the foreground and B1B1B1 for the background. Drag the gradient tool from the cent down as far as the red arrow in image a). Zoom in to 500% magnification and then, using the rectangular marquee tool , delete a pixel wide section, as shown in image b). Nudge the selection below the gap, using the arrow keys, and then fill it with a light grey. Do this a total of 3 times.

[10] Now first you can make the selection then create a new shape with the help of Elliptical Marquee Tool as shown image belew.

Let's see, how to create.

Create a new document 600400 fill the background with a color of your choice OR use an image like a wood texture. Im going to use the wood texture feel free use it.

On the "edge" layer, adjust the curves as shown, or fiddle with it untill the metal effect looks right, switch to the blade layer and adjust the curves to make it very slightly darker than the edge.
