To smooth and soften the woman's skin, we're going to use Photoshop's High Pass filter. If you're familiar with the High Pass filter, it's most likely because you've used it before as an advanced way of sharpening images. I say "advanced" not because it's somehow difficult or complicated to use but because it usually gives you better sharpening results than you'd get by using Photoshop's classic Unsharp Mask filter. Check out our Sharpen Images With The High Pass Filter tutorial for more information.

During the course of this Photoshop I'm going to show you how to make skin look smooth. The Photoshop technique itself is not complicated, but does require you to be patient and work slow and accurate. If you can meet these requirements, then it's not going to be very difficult to see good results.

good point, usually i was using the brush with the skin color, and opacity turned to almost minimum. this can help but you should be very careful, as it may turn the skin into plastic x)

3. Now just change the blending mode of the top layer to overlay and surprise yourself of how nice your pictures can be with a little photoshop trick!

When you see glamour shots - you know, photos of The Beautiful People who look so absolutely perfect - one of the things you are not seeing is the texture of the skin. No wrinkles. No creases. No pores? Indeed, the skin appears to be perfectly smooth.

In the next tutorial will have the opportunity to learn how to soften the skin of a model, smoothing the skin becomes like a teenager.

--In an area away from skin you're going to smooth, drag a rectangular selection. If there's room, make the selection as large as the area of skin you're going to smooth.

This is great! Just what i was looking for. I tried 2 other ways to make tanned skin but they didnt give a good result like this one.

6) Select the Brush tool (B), set the foreground color to black, check out the size and the hardness, and start painting over the areas you want to reveal. Eyes, mouth, nose, ears, jewelry and maybe hair. This way you keep the skin blured, and yes, smoother.

That is looking too smooth, which make it look rather unrealistic, so lets put some texture back into the skin. Go to Filter->Noise->Add Noise. For amount, put about 2.5%, Uniformed and Monochromatic selected.

4. And this is how it looks when you compare the pictures!
