Grunge, dirty, gritty, slimy, rusty, shattered, dripping, torn, worn, and whatever you think that you may frown upon in real life, is an awesome resource for creativity. An incredible amount of photo effects, text effects, brushes and textures are available for free access on the web. This list is a compilation of sixty grunge and distressed effects resources for Adobe Photoshop. Go and get your hands dirty with them!

2. Now go to the top menu, select Edit > Define Brush Preset... A window will popup, and you cna name your brush whatever you wish. Click Ok. Now your brush is available. When you use the paint brush, just click on the down arrow at toe top where it says Brush: scroll to the bottom and your brush will be there.

Some tips: if you apply many times the difference clouds filter in step 1, you'll get many different effects, and therefore, many different brush, this, also if you play differently with color balance, or with the choice of the final selection.

Now, draw something on your work space. It doesn't matter what, but it shouldn't be a clear shape. It has to look like dirt. Here is what i've made:

To make your brushes more original, go take pictures of objects and scenery. Then go back and play with the level adjustments, until you find a setting you think will produce a good grunge brush!

Now our rounded diamond shape has been set as a preset brush that can be used on any of your projects or designs. Simply select the Brush Tool ( ), and selecting it from the assortment of brushes that are loaded:

Make a selection anywhere you see fit and go to Edit > Define Brush Preset. Label your brush and press OK. To use the new brush click your Brush tool and under the file menu you will see a box with the current brush style. Click the small arrow and select your grunge preset.

The key to using Photoshop's new painting engine is the new, high-powered Brushes palette. Let's take a look at the basic workings of the palette.

In this simple tutorial you will learn how to easily create your own brushes so that you have brushes with the shapes you need.

4. To finish this off, get another grunge brush either you made or someone else, and brush a little bit over the edges with white.

Thats it. You now have your own grunge brush. Just keep adjusting the picture with the Curves tool and keep defining more brushes.

Step 6. Choose the brush drop down and you should see your new brush. You can select the brushes palette to further modify your brushes. You can modify colors, scattering if the brush, tapering and many other options. We will explore these in the advanced brush tutorial.

Step 5 Now we have to desaturate whole photo and after that use Levels command to fine tune our future brush. To desaturate photo you press SHIFT + CTRL + U on keyboard. After desaturation press CTRL + L to bring Levels menu on screen. Make it looks like this
