In this Photoshop tutorial I'll show you how to create a wood inlay effect using wood textures, layer masks and a few creative selection techniques.
Copy this new desaturated layer to a new grayscale document. This will be the displacement map. We have to apply a Gaussian blur to the displacement map (grayscale document we just created) to soften the wood or else the edges of the text will appear too grainy. Apply a Guassian blur by going to filter>blur>guassian blur. If you're using the wood image I supplied, set the radius to 1.5
And now in the "Colors" layer, paint your flowers with the brush and different colors, pretty easy because you are painting on the "Colors" layer and it's behind the text itself so you can do it very quickly.
Use Type Tool [T] to create text that you want to make look like metal. For the best result use large text, e.g. size 75+.
Change the layer blending option of the duplicated wood layer to "Overlay" and duplicate it a couple of times more, you will see this adds a glowing effect to the wood texture:
I've added a couple of lines over the text where the boards end. You may also want to "Gaussian Blur" these lines, but only a little bit. I hope you enjoyed this quick and easy tutorial.
Then go ahead and choose the text tool. I chose "Franklin Gothic Medium" as the typeface at a size of 75 using the color 694626. Now type wood and move on to the next step.
