Windows have entered the world of beautiful and aesthetic interface graphics with windows XP. The icons styles have set a trend for designing front end elements. In this tutorial we'll try to create an iconic graphic in windows XP style.

Today we'll create a wallpaper in Vista style. A black background will be filled with stylish gradients decorated with blue and green abstract curved shapes. The techniques used in this tutorial are scalable. It's easy to turn the final design into different sizes to fit various monitors. Let's learn how to do it.

Let's go back in time and look at Windows XP system icons. We'll get inspired by an old computer icon. Then we'll create a simple monitor icon in that style. Icon Factory is the company that created the icons for both Vista and XP Windows operating systems. Their works serves as inspiration for not only this tutorial, but many icons created today.

This tutorial will show you how to make a semi-transparent Vista-inspired menu using gradients, shadows, and blurring to produce a stunning modern effect.

If you're a Windows Vista user, you're probably familiar the eye catching graphics shown off on the box, and in some of their wallpapers/screensavers. In this tutorial, I'm going to show you how to create that effect yourself.

Lets first take a look at a few Vista icons. The icon we'll be working towards is the Error icon on the left, however by simply changing the color in the Layer Style you'll be able to easily adapt this icon to many others and perhaps even come up with some on your own.

Looking for some screensavers? You've come to the right spot. With our expanding selection of vista screensaver you won't have to stare at the black screen any more. If you're looking for 3D or aquatic screensavers search our selection below.

The easiest way to change the look of vista is to get a new desktop wallpaper. With everything from cars to foliage, you're sure to find the right wallpaper for your computer. Search our selection of great selection of wallpaper and make sure to check back often as we are always adding new items.

This tutorial is going to teach you how to draw a Vista styled vector pen in Photoshop using the Pen Tool and Layer Blending Options. We will go through drawing the pen's basic shapes and then give each of them different Blending Options such as Gradient Overlay, Inner Glow, Inner Shadow, etc. Drawing a pen in vector format will make our drawing suitable for use in any resolution. Your final results is going looks like the image shown below.

Your Vista Style Folded Tip Icon is now complete. Like Windows Vista, you can add any symbol or logo to the file icon you just designed to identify it. In the sample below, I have used Oman3D's logo and added a small Overlayed white fill on the edge of the logo to act as gloss.

I have seen some pretty neat wallpapers for vista, especially the one with the different colored curved lines. Even if you don't care for windows products you can still use this technique to make a cool wallpaper for any system. The wallpaper I am about to show you isn't supposed to look like the actual vista wallpaper, just similar in style.

Esta muy chevere el tutorial pero en que formato se debe guardar para poderlo usar como icono, eso me tiene dando vueltas. Gracias por la ayudita

With the pen tool create a simple shape like in the following image ( i have changed the color to red so you can see better what i am doing )

The stop icon is almost complete. Since most icons are rather small, we reduced this icon to a much smaller height. Look below for final product.

Select and merge all layers together. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Make three copies of the new made layer and make use of the Free Transform option to turn the drawing around the way it is shown on the picture (change the parameters of the gradient according to color). Apply again the eraser if that is necessary.

Add any font you wish to use on your new vista style button, I'm no good with fonts but if you want to know the font I'm using, then I used Century Gothic, using a bold setting at 30pt

Import your logo (make sure it is transparent, fit it between the Gloss and Advanced Gloss layers. It should be noted that this logo is really good and was made for the windows logo, not every logo will look good. The gloss over the logo is basic, you can do it from what you have learned already in this tutorial.

Simply add the Minimize and Maximize icons by screenshoting them and pasting them in. For the Close icon, change the color from Blue to Red. Result is shown below:

I hope you've enjoyed following along with this tutorial, and that you've picked up a few ideas, and techniques. Try experimenting with these techniques with different colors, and on different shapes. As proven by this tutorial, you can use these tips and tricks on literally any shape imaginable. If you can't think of a logo shape to use it on, go ahead and try adding it to your favorite thick/bold font just for practice. It's fun to do, and looks great!

Select and merge all the layers. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Select the first book layer. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

With the add to shape area still enabled create more basic shapes to create a bottle shape. We'll call this bottle neck layer.

Press Ctrl+T. Right click the layer and select warp. Adjust nodes to get the shape as shown. Place it for the flap of the briefcase.

Select all layers. Press Ctrl+E to merge the layers together. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply settings as shown.

Select and merge all the duplicate layers. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Select and merge all the layers. Press Ctrl+T. Scale down. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Select the rounded rectangle layer. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Select and merge all layers. Scale down to icon size. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Select and merge all the layers. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Create a new layer and fill it with any color. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply settings as shown.

Create a duplicate of the play button layers and replace the triangle with two vertical rectangles to create pause button. Just copy layer style from triangle layer and paste on pause shape.

Select and merge all the layers. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown.

Now that we have 2 or 3 different bands of light, we won't need to make anymore of them. Instead, you can Duplicate the layers you've made, and Freely transform them to become new shapes. Remember, Ctrl + T to transform. You can get some interesting effects by holding the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift Keys while dragging the transformation nodes.

Next you'll want to apply an icon to the button. You can create your own by using the pencil tool or you could download very high quality icons for an affordable price at www.WebsiteIcons.com. Which is a site I highly recommend.

We are now going to select the top half of the navigation bar. To do this hold ctrl on your keyboard and select the nav layer so you select the whole surface area. And then grab your rectangular marqee tool and set it Subtract from selection and make a selection over your shape like so:

Now your going to need a busyish background, I'm going to use a windows vista wallpaper known as vista grass feel free to use your own, the vista grass image can be found here. Open up your image your going to use in my case the vista grass image. Copy/paste onto your layout canvas you will need to resize it so press "ctrl + t" select one of the corner anchor points and drag down also whilst holding the shift key. (the shift key keeps the original shape). You want the image to be the same width as your header and to cover most of the canvas at the bottom but leaving sufficient space for a footer.

Your rectangle should now be transformed into a windows vista style taskbar. Using the custom shapes provided by photoshop add a home button and sitemap button at the top left corner of your rectangle. You should have something like this.

Select the pen tool once again and create another line using the color #389fa4. Add an outer glow using the settings below.

However, for the purposes of this tutorial, we will not cover those in detail. Please feel free to download our Vista Window Photoshop Document yourself if you'd like to see how we did it. If you'd like, you may use the styling effects we've setup in the document for your own personal use (Just remember to tell your buddies where they can learn how to do this too!). Be sure to check out our other great Photoshop Tutorial here at Tutorial9 if you enjoyed this one.

In this tutorial, I'll do my best do show you how easily you can make a Vista icon out of two Photoshop layers.

Hey Although Vista isn't the best operating system in the world, it does have some good visual elements. In this tutorial I am going to show you how to create your very own Vista style button. It doesn't take long and can be applied to anything. You will need a copy of Photoshop and about 10 - 15 minutes of free time. The first step is to create your canvas. It can be any size you want you button to be. I've picked 200pixels by 100 pixels. Mine, of course, will be rectangular. In hindsight it would be better to fill the entire canvas with your gradient we are about to create. I don't no why but I decided to create a rectangle in the middle of my work piece. I would suggest you skip this step. The gradient that is used is comprised of two colours. The one on the left is colour value, 252525. The colour on the right is 9a9a9a. Put these colours into into the gradient panel. The gradient has a definite start and stop. Click in the centre of the bar to add a colour value. Move the small diamond as close as you can to the centre. You gradient style should look something like this. Apply this to your canvas. Keep the application line vertical and you should have a cool gradient. The next step is to add some small features to the canvas (I've cropped my canvas now). Select the whole work piece. Go Select > Modify > Contract and enter 1 pixel. This should shrink you select. Now you need to inverse the selection so you are not selecting the middle of your work. This is easily done. Go Select > Inverse. Now colour this new selection with the colour value 252525. You work should now look something like this. The next step is to create a very faint white to transparent gradient on the edge of the lighter part of your work. First using the marque tool select the top half of your work but don't select the back board you just created. You are going to use one of the fancy selection tools. These don't get used often are are selectable in the top left tool bar when you have the select tool open. Press the third button from the left. This is the "Subtract from Selection" tool. Which as you might have guessed enable us to remove a part of the selection. You now need to select a rectangle inside your previously selected area. Using the space bar to move any selection you have draw a box with a 1 pixel boarder. It doesn't have to be to accurate, just very small and equal on all sides. Let go of the mouse when you have an area selected that you are happy with. Use the gradient ...

There are many tutorials out there that show you how to make folder icons in Adobe Illustrator. I made this tutorial because I'm not too familiar with Illustrator and I'm sure a lot of other people aren't either. Of course, if you are trying to make an icon, you should really use Illustrator or some other vector-based program to avoid pixellation when resizing to/from icon sizes. That said, beggar's can't be choosers, and if you want to create Windows XP-style icons solely in Photoshop, then this is how you do it!

Superb tutorial. Really easy to follow. Probably the easiest tutorial I have ever done because of the detailed screenshots and instructions! Thank-you!

This tutorial is going to teach you how to draw a Vista styled mouse in Photoshop using the Pen Tool , and then colour it by shading and highlight techniques using the Burn Tool and Dodge Tool . These colouring techniques will help you understand how to create depths using shading and highlighting without the need of reference cross lines. Note that this tutorial requires basic pen tool drawing skills to be able to execute it. After completing the tutorial, your final mouse is going to look similar to the finished sample below:
