First thing you will have to do is a Plane on the top view port. Your plane will have 1 length segment and 9 width segments. It will look like this:

Modeling car tyres is a polygon eating exercise (you end up with quite a few in the end), but definately worth it if you want to make a realistic looking car: using bump maps for threads is a bit too obvious.

BANG!! there you go a nice car tyre with chunky tread, different patterns can be found online and by scaling the NULL OBJECT you can make the tread stick out more or less etc...Also the amount of duplicates must be experimented with to get the kind of tread spacing you want ;-))
