Ultimately the creation of each icon is inheretly different. To say that I haven't gone into detail is a mild understatement. There are quite alot of aspects which i haven't covered, but I hope that i've shed some light on the process of making an Icon.

Title: This Photoshop tutorial teaches you to create a shoe icon Description: This tutorial clearly demonstrates the use of Pen Tool. At the end of this tutorial you will be able to master the pen tool and create the custom shapes of your own like the one shown below, rather than hunting for them on the net.
Select the Pen Tool and step-by-step trace each part of the helmet. We begin with the visor area. Don????t worry about the color, it's the shape that's important. For better accuracy, it's good to decrease the layer????s visibility (Opacity). Simply press the numlock key corresponding to the percentage opacity you want — for example, 5 for 50% Opacity. When tracing, be sure to draw as a Shape Layer (first icon on the Options bar), so you can modify this layer in the future.
Another drawing tutorial for icon lovers in which we'll be illustrating a metallic compass. We'll be controlling shadow and reflection to add realism to the illustration. As with any icon design, it's a combination of the overall design and subtle details that gives quality results.
When we are working on a Web design project, we quite often need icons to show commands like add, delete, or edit. With the Web 2.0 trend, the use of badges and subtle 3D has become very popular. In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a really easy and very nice 3D effect to be used in either buttons and icons or elements that need some depth.

A Dictionary Every Icon is communicating a metaphor and because you are appealing to a wide audience, the accepted meaning for a term is very important. So the inclusion of a Dictionary with 10.4 Tiger was a boon for anyone who has ever tried to sum up vertically integrated certification process in a 16x16 square. This process may sound a bit silly but every Icon needs to rely on a strong metaphor which is understood by the widest audience. Simplicity always wins out so in this case we will produce a key which looks like it attaches to a chain. Sketching Then the process of swirling out your ideas begins. It doesn't matter if the sketch looks like monotone roadkill, you are just throwing ideas down onto paper at the moment. If any aspiring filmmakers ever needed encouragement they should look at the Taxi Driver storyboards of Martin Scorcese. The man has incredible talent in filmaking but would be thrown out of kindergarden art class. Once you have placed some ideas down on paper you can scan them in and dive into your image editor of choice. I'm using Photoshop CS and IconBuilder Pro for this one. The method I use to create icons could be wildly different from someone else so go with whatever method feels comfortable. The end result will be a series of scaled resources that the OS will use in different views. Blocking In Colours From my sketch ideas I'm going to take the angled key with a button for operation at a distance. The icon is going to be built using vector shapes and layer styles so there is no need to build a huge source file and scale down as these will scale up quite well. First we draw out the base layer with the pen tool. It's usually helpful to have the sketch on a layer at the top set to overlay mode as you can then check you are following the rough idea. When we have the base layer laid down we can then start to fill in certain shapes with layer styles such as gradients and inner glows to give definition. The pattern overlay tool can be quite useful to give some texture in certain areas. Highlights And Shadows When we have filled in the base layers with colour and some effect we can start building up highlight layers for each of these examples. The main concern with the highlight layers is to reinforce the overall shape of the icon, be it a sphere, pipe, or circle. So on this Icon, we use a lighter shade of grey to build up the curve of the rubber. The surface would be quite dull so the edges and highlights would all be quite soft. Las...

These icons cover the majority of web design trends, including rounded corners, juicy colours combination, folded edge, very light gradients on the icon and text, combination of bold and thin text in one line. I hope you will enjoy this file and as usual feedback is welcome.

Hey This is a very simple tutorial that is going to turn an RSS icon into a grungy version that can ideally be used on a website. You can apply this technique to any image. Its really easy to complete. Click any of the images for the full versions. For this tutorial you will need: Photoshop A grunge Black and White Image (provided below) A good grunge brush (here) The RSS icon Step 1) Pretty Simple this step, download the RSS icon and save it to your hard disk. You can click on it for the full version. Step 2) Open the RSS icon in Photoshop or similar. Since it is a png it should have some transparent edges. This should be on a seperate layer. If it is placed on the background layer double click it and select ok when prompted. Step 3) To make the icon look more grungy you need to change the colours to suit. I've change the hue to +16, lowered the saturation and lightness to -63 and -39 respectively. Change these values to any you want. Step 4) To enable some of the layer blending styles later on remove the white bits within the icon. Select the magic wand tool click the white areas and press delete. Step 5) The next step is to add the first layer of grunge. Download the black and white image below (click for full size) and place in into your document. Go File > Place. Right click on the file and select rasterize. Step 6) Select the magic want again. One the new black and white grunge layer select the white and delete it. Change the blending option to Soft Light. The blending option blends the layers together. Step 7) This is step involves removing some of the black and white of the image. On the original RSS icon select the areas that are transparent. De-select Contiguous from the tool bar at the top of the screen to select all of the areas that have no pixels. Select the black and white layer with the areas still selected and press delete. Step 8) The worn out look is achieve very simply. Download and load in the grunge brush (Edit > Preset Manager > Brushes > Load). Go Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All. Set the grunge brush to black and in the layer mask apply some grunge brush strokes. Set the opactiy of the brush down so you don't delete a lot at a time. Use the Brush Options (Window > Brushes > Brush Tip Shape) to change the angle of the brush to best suit your needs. A layer mask is used instead of the eraser because you still preserve the image data and this can be recovered easily by removing the layer mask. Step 9) Apply some of step 8 and 9 to your image. The result you get looks something like the image below. I'm pleased about it and would look brilliant on a grungy type website. Click for the full image. Please leave a comment with links to your creations and if you applied it to your site please drop a comment so I can see what it looks like.

Start with a large black canvas, in your layers window make a new layer set and name it Computer Screen. Choose your rounded rectangle tool with a 4 px radius, in a new layer draw a 139 x 89 pixels, white rounded rectangle.
STEP 1: Start with a large black canvas, in your layers window make a new layer set and name it Calendar Icon. Create a new layer. Choose your rectangle tool and draw a 55 x 52 pixels, #C00000 colored rectangle.
Another major issue that contributes to off-looking icons is color. Make sure you pick colors that either go with the rest of the site (in the case of a website icon) or colors that don't clash with the operating system / other icons (in the case of an application icon). A prime example of clashing colors is my black screenshade icon. It looks OK by itself, but when you plop it in the dock with all of the other icons, it just looks out of place.

Now we have our basic shape for our hard drive, now its time to dress it up with some extras, firstly create a new layer above "hd_top" called "hd_shine" select the pen tool and create a selection like this.
I hope that you have enjoyed this set of tutorials teaching you how to customize your own RSS Feed Icons. As you have seen there are quick, easy ways to make a custom icon and there are more advanced methods. These two options are just the tip of the iceberg though; I have seen a ton of custom Feed Icons all over the Internet and each one has it's own unique shape, style and flare. One of my favorites has to be the Bomb Icon that Jason Boom uses for his feed. I'm sure there's some repository of Feed Icons on display somewhere around the Internet until you run into it though check out Google Images for ideas.
Select after that the Rectangle Tool (U) to represent the primary layer reserved for the icon that would be situated on the central part of the picture. The layer's color is #2BA7ED

Use the Pencil tool, select 1px brush from the palette. Pick a dark gray color and start drawing the outline of the page icon. To draw a straight line, first click at the starting point, then hold down shift key and click at the ending point.
Draw a black color circle with ellipse tool. Draw another smaller white color circle with same tool. Merge and duplicate the wheel layer and place it as shown. For the left side wheels, there is no need to draw a white circle.
As you may already know, I have a penchant for browsing the vast gallery of templates available at Template Monster. Sometimes I go looking for particular templates, but more often than not, I look for cool web page elements like icons. In this lesson, we will create a basic icon for contacts. This will be the end result.
1. First create a square using the Rounded Rectangle Tool and use the Geometry Options as you can see below. With this we'll be doing a square with a size of 96px,if you want can use another icon size like: 128px, 64px, 48px, 32px, 24px, 16px, 12px or 10px. If you prefer it can use you own customized size.
Step 4. Lets make the icon a little more glossy and modern. While holding Ctrl click on the thumbnail of the "base" layer. This should create a selection around the shape of the base of the icon. Create a new layer (Ctrl + Alt + Shift + N), and call it "highlights", click and drag the highlights layer so that it sits below the Ps layer, our text layer.
Now for the arms, create a new layer that is above both your head and your body layer, Zoom back in and set your foreground color to #397829 pull out the pencil tool with the width set to 1 pixel and draw three pixels like below on the bottom left hand side of the icon.
Here you are going to learn how to make an icon that will show up when your site is added to the user's favorites with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Suite/Firefox. In Mozilla Suite/Firefox it will also show up on the tabs.
Another drawing tutorial for icon lovers in which we???ll be illustrating a metallic compass. We???ll be controlling shadow and reflection to add realism to the illustration. As with any icon design, it???s a combination of the overall design and subtle details that gives quality results.
Let's start out by creating a new file. I used a 400x200 pixels canvas set at 72dpi, and I filled my background with a white color. Now create a new layer set and name it 'Date Icon'.
In this tutorial, it will show you how to make a key icon. The idea is very similar to the previous tutorial which was published. The key icon is initiated from a sketch. Then, you can start up the process of painting based on the key shape. The main concern with the highlight layers is to reinforce the overall shape of the icon, be it a sphere, pipe, or circle.
In this tutorial, we will learn howto create a flying mail icon in Photoshop. You will also learn how to customize the autoshapes and use them according to need. Final output can be seen below:
Olate is a UK software company specialising in products for other software developers. These products include iono - a PHP licensing system, Arctic - a PHP bug tracking system and UK dedicated servers.
This tutorial is designed to create an icon that is similar to the Icons you see on all the new applications by Adobe. Although it is no perfect, it still looks good. You will for this Photoshop. Click any of the image for full size. Step 1) The first step is to create your canvas. Use the standard size of 120 x 120 px. Step 2) Set the layer to a new layer and not the background. This is needed for the effects to be applied. Step 3) Add your desired colour. I've used a style from a Web 2.0 Styles pack. You will need to do subtle adjustments. Step 4) Some adjustments that you will need to do is add a bevel and emboss. This needs to be very light and added over the top of the style effect. Step 5) You now need to add text. Although there is an official font that is used, I can't find it for free. Although I have used Tahoma. Any sans-serif substitute can suffice. Step 6) Center the text and enlarge to fit. Make sure it isn't to tight around the edges. Step 7) At this point you may need to lock the layers so you can transform both layers with out the need to do each layer in turn. Step 8) Transform the layer so there is a small gap on the bottom and right edge. Step 9) One thing that you can do that I forgot is add a very subtle colour overlay to the text. This again is in the style pallet of the Web 2.0 pack. Step 10) Export and you are done. Looks Ok.
If you need to show some compressed files as icon on your website you can try this tutorial which creates a Winzip File Compress Icon. If you don't use winzip you can use another file compressing tool icon like winrar or any other file compressing utility.
Now we will create a couple additonal anchor points to the line. Select the "Add Anchor Point Tool" and place a new anchor on the top and bottom, centered as illustrated below.
Have you ever seen the little icons appearing in the address bar at the top of your browser? Maybe you've seen it in your Favorites? Would you like to learn how to create one?

Then ewe are just going to create a square with the rectangular marquee tool and fill it with any color. It doesn't matter cause we are going to add gradient overlay. Now you should have something that look like this:
I've create an easy to use Photoshop Template just for mapping out each icon size. This way you don't have to bother creating multiple size documents and what not. Simply drag and drop the icon layer(s) onto the template and the duplicate and resize according to each size on the template. At this time you may want to sharpen icons at smaller sizes to give them more definition. Remember: you can use Fade controls (located under the Edit menu) after using the sharpen filter.
1. Begin with a square - any size will do. Use the rectangular marquee tool (M) & hold down shift to constrain the dimensions. I filled it with #ff0000.
5. Now we are going to add some color. Verify that Colored Circle is the current layer . Using the Rectangular Marquee Tool fill in each quadrant as shown below. Next Ctrl+Click on the layer containing the original circle. Then go to Select > Inverse (Shift+Ctrl+I). Finally press the delete or go to Edit > Cut. Your icon should now look the image below on the right. We will no longer need the layer containing the old blue circle, so you may delete that layer.
The icon were going to be creating is all done using shape layers which means you can resize up and down without loss of quality. Photoshop is a powerful tool for creating illustrations, here I will show you how using the Cutout filter to make simple illustrations from your photos.
Adobe Photoshop includes Layer Styles, a number of automated effects that you can apply to layers, including drop shadows, glows, beveling, and embossing, as well as a color fill effect. Layer styles allow you to edit applied effects dynamically without having to create a smart object version of the image layer first. This means that you can apply editable effects to a selected image, shape, or type layer without permanently altering any pixels.
The way that layers interact with other layers in the stack is determined by the blending mode of the upper layer. By default the layer???s mode is set to Normal, which causes the picture content on the upper layer to obscure the picture parts beneath, but Photoshop has many other ways to control how these pixels interact. Called blend modes, the different options provide a variety of ways to control the mixing, blending and general interaction of the layer content.
There are a lot of methods for imitating different photo effects, but today I???ll tell you how is it possible to tone the picture into sepia and then process it in a way as if it is taken with infrared filter. Sepia toning consists of processing the colored or black and white picture with chemical influence and getting smooth yellow, brown or red nuances. This process in Photoshop may be got, applying Duotone Mode and by the way it is possible to use any other color instead of brown one.
Smashing Magazine has a great summary of the Apple Human Interface guidelines on Icon Design. The section on Realism in Aqua makes some good points about the limitations of realism in icon design and points out when symbolism is necessary.
