Custom gradients that you have created can be saved as a custom set along with the other gradients in the current palette by clicking the Save button. If you want to save your custom gradients in a custom set without the rest of the current palette, use the Preset Manager and not the Save button. To do this choose Edit > Preset Manager, and choose Gradients from the Preset Type menu. Click, and Shift-click to select all the gradients you would like to be included in your new set. Choose Save Set and give the set a name. After you close and reopen Elements, your new set will appear in the gradient tool pop-up palette?s menu.[Note that all illustrations shown below are from Elements 1. Except for cosmetic differences, they are the same in Elements 2.]

Scroll through and click some of the various gradients. Make sure that the "preview" button is checked so you can see how the end result will look:

Choose the Gradient tool (G) from the Toolbox. In the Options Bar for the tool, click the triangle button next to the gradient thumbnail to open up the Gradient Picker. Click on the third swatch from the left in the top row. This is always black to white. You also want to look at the row of five icons next to the Gradient Picker and make sure that the fi rst one (Linear Gradient) is enabled. Finally, make sure that the Mode is set to Normal and the Opacity to100% and that the Reverse checkbox isn't checked.

The gradient tool is really powerful when combined with something called layer masking. With the gradient tool on certain settings you will be able to create perfect fades, blends and transitions between different images. This training is covered extensively in Basic Photoshop Training DVD's. Here, though you should just get comfortable with the gradient tool and the different choices available. Try different color gradients also. It will take some practice to get the perfect swipe' to deal with any situation (this will come with experience) and can save you the time of using sloppy eraser tool techniques.

Create a new blank layer (layer: new: layer is the menu way) and choose another gradient. You'll note that the first two upper left gradients will always reflect the colors (foreground and background) that are chosen in the color chooser in the toolbar.

This is the most important section of the gradient toolbar, it shows the colors that compose our gradient; if you click on it a new window will popup and you will be able to totally customize the gradient, let's have a look at it:

In this tutorial, we will show you how to easily create stylish web header using only Gradient Tool , Vector mask and Layer effect. The final web header image will include 3 layers consisted of 3 separate gradient this will allow you to easily edit each part later. If you like, you can download sample of final .psd file that create in this tutorial at bottom of this page.

Instead of using the Gradient tool to add color to the background, try adding a Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer above the background layer. Check Colorize and play with the sliders until you get a color you like. Example:

Let's start by opening a new document. I'm going to create a mini-wallpaper, only 320x240. (Just to save some bandwidth) If you're making a desktop wallpaper you should of course use the same dimentions as the screen resolution you're on. But feel free to use the same size as I'm using here, It may be easier to follow my steps then.

The Gradient Tool is a gem when it comes to making backgrounds. The basic way to use the Gradient Tool is to choose colours, pick one of the Gradient options from the options bar and drag the cursor over the image.

Add color to the sky by simply editing the color of the gradient. To do so first open the gradient options by double clicking on the thumbnail of the gradient on your layers palette, this opens the gradient fill settings.

This tutorial will show you a few simple techniques to design a nice smooth gradient header and nav bar that you can use in your web designs.
