How to Create a Tileable Lava Texture 1. Create a new document with dimensions 512x512 pixels at 72 dpi 2.Set the foreground color to #A42E04 and the background color to #E45C05. Apply the clouds filter to the image. 3. Now apply the difference clouds filter at least four times. (You can keep applying it after 4 times to achieve different effects). 4. Apply an unsharp mask filter. Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask. Settings: Amount 400%, Radius 17 pixels, Threshold 14 levels. 5. Create a new layer. Set the foreground color to #FCDE13 and the background color to #FCB30C. Apply the clouds filter to the new layer. 6. Using the same process as previously outlined, apply the difference clouds filter at least 4 times. 7. Set the opacity of layer 1 to around 20 percent, and set the blending mode to screen. 8. Now the wood is starting to look somewhat realistic, but its not quite a there yet. The problem is that the photoshoped wood is too perfect (more noticable with a larger sized picture). Real wood has knots, wane and other irregularities in it.
A screen named texturizer will appear. Select texture as Brick. Select scaling as 200%. Select relief as 15. Select light direction as top left. Click on Ok.
Have you ever seen those cool looking abstract desktop backgrounds people are making? Turns out they aren't so hard to make! Follow this tutorial to learn how to make some of the coolest designs possible in PhotoShop.
How can you not know this? Learn how to create the most famous, and most common used photoshop-pattern there is... Scanlines. Awsome for signatures or photo-manipulations!
1) Open a new document, any size - fill the background with (#004477) note i used (200x200 for the size) 2) Now click 'Filter' > 'Sketch' > 'Halftone Pattern' and enter these values: (size:1; contrast:5; pattern type:dot). 3) Now we use 'grain' to get the 'jean' effect - click 'filter' > 'texture' > 'grain' again.. follow and enter these values: (intensity:100; contrast: 38; grain type: regular). 4) Now it looks all crappy to be blunt, to fix this we use a simple solution of 'hue/saturation' so hold and press 'ctrl + u' enter the following values into the popup window. 5) Our final result:
Note: I'm gonna teach you how to make the 6 most famous and most-used patterns and how to add them! N.1 This is the dotted pattern wich we will start by creating a 3x3 document and placing a black dot with the pencil-tool in the middle. As for all patterns we need to go to Edit>Define Pattern to save it! N.2 This pattern is made by creating a 5x5 document and draw a stairway from the upper left corner to the lower right with the pencil-tool. N.3 Just do the same as you did with N.2 or just go to Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal if you're just as lazy as I am :) N.4 Start this pattern by making a 10x10 document. It's kind of the same as N.2 and N.3 but it gets you bigger lines wich is sometimes very handy! Again, if you want it the other way around, flip it... N.5 Create a 5x5 document and create a cube with a hole in it. It may look crap right now but if you look at orb N.5, you'll see that is gives sweet results! N.6 Scanlines. I covered them in a different tutorial, but it's very simple. Just create a 3x1 or 1x3 document and try to make it the same as my image down...
In PhotoShop, we can define anything we create as a pattern, which can be a really powerful tool. We can also use these patterns in Layer Styles. Let's open up the styles of the money layer and goto Pattern Overlay. Here we can overlay a pattern we created, such as the same as the background:
NOTE Unfortunately Photoshop's 'Rotate' function is very poor at re-creating some types of shapes repeatedly, especially outlines, after they've been rotated - a circle being the worst shape for it to do. So, for our particular purpose here, we'll have to create a basic shape manually first, then we'll rotate copies of that shape around to create a more complex pattern. For creating basic patterns, I find the following method produces the best looking results.
I received an overwhelming response to the Creating Custom Patterns and Hero Header Part I tutorials asking for a comprehensive tutorial on creating complex repeating patterns, especially the heavy damask style that I have such an obvious affinity for. This one is for all of you who want so badly to dig even deeper into this technique. Grab a shovel and lets get to work. I'll be breaking this tutorial into 2 parts and in this first installment I'll show you how to create the base pattern and in Part 2 we'll be adding color and texture to create an even cooler effect.
This tutorial will demonstrate a quick and easy method to create really wild psychedelic backgrounds. Backgrounds like these would be extremely difficult to paint by hand, but there's a trick to doing them in Photoshop in a matter of seconds.
We're doing something a little different today. Abstract, if you will. These accidental textures were born out of a kitchen disaster. After burning some food and proceeding to spill it on my kitchen counter, I got to cleaning up the mess with a soapy sponge. And then I noticed the swirls, swooshes and patterns formed by my scrubbing motions were really quite gorgeous. So I intentionally dimmed the light and shot them with a long exposure and a slightly shaky hand, to accentuate the graininess and blurriness of the swishes.
In this second installment we'll take the pattern created in Complex Repeating Patterns Part I and use it to create a heavy damask fabric by adding layer styles and a few unique layers.
Many many many possibilities exist in the world of PhotoShop, and the more you experiment and play around with settings and values and filters, etc. the more you will find things out.
In this tutorial, Matt uses an artistic brush to make a pattern in Illustrator and then takes that pattern into Photoshop to use as a weathered layer effect.
A few lines below you will find examples: once you have drawn your patter hit Edit > Define Pattern, then enter a name for the pattern end press OK. Now your pattern has been saved to your patterns palette; if you want to fill a layer with a pattern you simply have to hit Edit > Fill then choose Pattern in the Use Drop Down Menu and select the desired pattern in the Custom Pattern Box

Note that the Clip at Control Path checkbox is selected and so your pattern consists of a checkerboard created from a piece of your gradient. The repeat of your checker pattern is exactly the same as the repeat of the main Lilies pattern because both patterns share the same control path (and of course the same symmetry, which happened automatically because the plug-in re-uses the original settings when it rebuilds a pattern into an existing SymmetryShop Layer).

The important thing to remember about Patterns is that they're underrated. Find some images with good textures and you can start creating your own unique patterns and textures to use as backgrounds, fills, textures and for poweruse in creating unlimited layer styles. Start with some good images and create your own Patterns. Get beyond the (boring) default ones in Photoshop to create some great design elements!
A pattern is an image that is repeated, or tiled, when used to fill a layer or selection. Photoshop comes with a variety of preset patterns which are displayed in pop?up palettes in the options bar for the Paint Bucket, Pattern Stamp, Healing Brush, and Patch tools, as well as in the Layer Style dialog box. This tutorial will teach you how to create new patterns and save them in libraries for use with different tools and commands. The example below shows how a 10px pattern is used to fill a bigger fill.

Ok, once you are satisfied with your texture set, you will want to save them. With the textures open, click the small arrow to the right. From this menu you can save the set for future use. A very nice thing about this feature is you can now apply the patterns to your Layer Styles. If you send your styles to others, remember they will need the texture pack as well.
Step 1 First of all, let me tell you that for this tutorial, you don't need fancy shapes, because Photoshop allready has a large variety of shapes like the ones below:
2. Go to Filter>>Texture>>Texturizer. Here, click on the small arrow, as shown below and select Load Texture. Now go to your Adobe Photoshop installation folder and go the texture folder, which is located here \Photoshop CS\Presets\Textures. From here select the puzzle.psd file and hit OK.

In this Photoshop tutorial, we'll dive into a pattern inspired by the artwork in the Stephen Colbert book I Am America (And So Can You) (the book has some very good illustrations). The tutorial will cover creating vector artwork from a photograph, taking the vector artwork and making a repeatable pattern and then creating a groovy wallpaper that utilizes the pattern. For the pattern, we'll pit Barack Obama versus John McCain. As one reader pointed out in the last tutorial which featured only Barack Obama, we'll feature both canidates in the upcoming Presidential election. Download PSD Files
Note: In the future if you want to avoid going through the various steps to add a halftone pattern to your design, check out the Halftone Pattern Brush Set.

3. Now load the selection from the 'alpha' layer and then show layers. Create a new layer and fill the selection with a color of your choice. There you have it, a Blocky pattern to a curvey one. This can be useful for making interface edges flow smoothly.
5. We have, in some cases, to change the layer with the pattern layer style thingy to Multiply or Color Burn to get the results we want! Remeber you can use any type of patterns to get just the result that suits you best! Good luck!
Here's a simple button with Custom Pattern background. It's made up of Text, Custom pattern and a solid color background. [Source attached]. Our focus here is on the Custom Pattern.
Making patterns is pretty easy. You start with a blank canvas, make it the size you like, and just let your imagination run wild. What I usually start with is a 10x10 pixel canvas. I then zoom in to 1000%. This allows me to work pixel by pixel so I can make the design very detailed.
Than deselect (Ctrl+D) and Edit -> Define Pattern. Name it Grid. Easy isn't it ? 3.) Cool 10px lines: This one is very cool and I personally use it a lot. Now create a new image 1px wide and 10 pixels long with transparent background. Zoom it to 1600% and select the upper pixel. Fill it with black, deselect (Ctrl+D) and Edit -> Define Pattern. You may name it TV Wide or something. 4.) Octagon texture (8 sided rectangle): Now this is a little bit tougher, but I will try to explain it as clearly as I can. First create a new image 19px by 19px with transparent background. Now it will be very useful if you toggle the rulers on (it's done by Ctrl+R and with this combination you switch them off) because we will have to select some hard pixels. Now zoom it to 1600% and use the Rectangle Selection Tool to get the pixels from 6 vertical (0 horizontal) to 14 vertical(1 horizontal) and fill it with black:

Set the Fill to 0%, and you'll see while the contents of the layer became completely transparent, it's effects still render properly. I.e. our pattern is now visible while the blue map became transparent!

Brushes: The basic steps for creating a custom brush in Photoshop are fairly simple. To begin, you want a new canvas upon which to create your artwork. I'm going to make a simple swirl brush.

Zoom in and using the Rectangular Marquee tool, select the top side of your shamrock up to the line of your guide. Next, move the selected part of your clover down to the opposite area of your pattern guide with the Move Tool (v) and holding Shift. If you are not confident about keeping it inline which is important use your arrow keys to nudge it into position. You want for the pixels of your clover to be lining up on top of your guides lines. This will make sure everything is seemless later.
