Now, there are some kinds of selection jobs that work better with the Background Eraser than with the actual Magic Eraser. The Background Eraser is more versatile and gives you greater control over some of the more difficult tasks. For instance, if you are selecting intricately shaped objects, the Background Eraser may be the tool for the job. Let???s say you want to isolate your image in your picture by removing the sky. The sky consists of edges that may prove difficult to work with. Remove the sky along with the detailed edges using the Background Eraser tool. Some selection tools would not be able to handle the job because of the position of the crenelations and the arches of the towers. This makes it very tricky when you want to try to remove the sky that is hidden among all of that other stuff.

The first part of the tutorial I created a new layer and sketch what I think should go behind the people I wanted to erase. Its always a good idea to sketch the background out when there is a good amount of details.

Now with your magic eraser tool just go ahead and click on the background area. In this case I have a photos.com image that has a nice simple background.

In this case I want you to know I didn't spend the time cleaning up the rest of the foreground layer. Hopefully the designer in you is cringing and thinking what is that ugly red background doing with this nice family?...good you're thinking. (I was in a hurry making 60 of these tutorials in a few days) Now pull in a background picture that would work nice in my other tutorials. I would also recommend a background if you want to keep any grass that would complement the foreground layer and which you could do some 'radial gradient layer masking' to get a perfect blend (zhooommmm). Yes this advanced technique is taught in the Basic Photoshop training program in-depth. I just can't give away all the secrets yet can I? The more I look at this photo the more I wonder what I was thinking. But hopefully you learned the background eraser tool and much more in this tutorial. If you have any concerns about the quality of my portfolio or design skills please check out the iPSDirectory immediately or my design tutorials on PhotoshopDesign.NET.

Once again contiguous means pixels that are touching each other. So if there's no interruption then all of the pixels in the area will be affected (see the background eraser tutorial for further explanation). In this case of the magic eraser it's ok to leave it on contiguous because you're not limited by the size of a brush; it will eraser all pixels in the surrounding area of the entire document that aren't blocked by another color.

Learn how to make a nondestructive selection from the layer transparency created by the Background Eraser Tool. It sounds complex, but it's easy and the results look great!

Pretty crappy choice of an image for erasing but I'm not trying to get a selection here. Just get comfortable using the eraser tool. In all reality I'll use it to clean up selections (covered in Basic Photoshop DVD's) but not for much else because there are other more powerful tools that await you. Nevertheless you must have an understanding of these basics so you can move on and have general proficiency for image editing or graphic design.

Experimentation with the 'Tolerance' level will ensure best results. As with the 'Background Eraser Tool (E)', there are further but fewer control options available on the 'Options Bar' when this tool is active.

If you find yourself needing to quickly remove the background from an image in Photoshop, take a moment to play with the background eraser tool.

The illustration below is the magic eraser tool?s options bar. The Tolerance setting determines how much variation in the selected color will be erased. A low setting allows very little variation; a high number will allow erasure of a broader range of similar colors. Choosing Anti-aliased will make the edges of the deleted area smoother.

Please note that the background eraser, and the magic eraser have their own pages. Choose the eraser you want to use by clicking on the eraser in the toolbar and holding the mouse button down. Pick the one you want from the pop-up menu.

The illustration on the below, is the background eraser tool?s options bar. To choose a brush size and type, click on the little down arrow to the right of the brush thumbnail. A pop-up palette of available brushes will appear. For more information on brushes, please see the Brushes page.
