Cgtextures.com is a great site deserving of a look at from every body interested so check em out. Here are some of the best textures we found at CGtextures.com. I run a site called OpenSourceHunter that is all about open source resources and freebees, so why not share great and free texture packs here on PSDTUTS. I'm 20 and I am from Portugal! I love Art and Design XD. The big reason that inspires me to make textures is that my work is based on them! And every time I create or photograph a new texture, I'm opening a door to infinite results! And that is the real beauty! Check out some of my works at Behance or DeviantArt.
Textures. We need em' , just like brushes as well as vector packs. Here are a few royalty free textures I have collected over the course of a few months and posted here for all of you guys to use and enjoy!
When it comes to textures in modern Web design, background images are probably the most common area of use. As you'll see in the examples below, a textured background image can easily be a significant feature in a design. There are countless options for using textures in this way, and many designers are using creativity here to create stunning results.

We are going to add an opacity mask for our floral texture. Click on the small arrow in the transparency palette and select "Make Opacity Mask" from the dropdown menu that appears. Alternatively, you could do the same thing by double clicking the white next to the image thumbnail in the same palette. You will notice right away that your journal cover is now the original blue of the shape directly below. This is because the mask is completely black by default. The Illustrator mask works the same as the Photoshop mask and right now we are revealing shape directly below. If you want to reveal some of the lighter blue gradient, all you'd have to do is paint some white or varying shades of gray on the mask. However, we are going to use that floral texture to help us add interest. So click File->Place and drop in the texture you saved. You can see the effect it creates right away. Experiment changing the size and rotate it, till you find the look you want. When you are finished editing the mask, make sure to click back on the image thumbnail within the transparency palette. This will tell Illustrator to get you out of the mask and you will be back to the normal mode. Hello there, Welcome to my Third tutorial. In This one I will be texturing the head of the character I made in my modeling tutorial. Textures and the Lighting Effects filter can make an image jump right off the page or screen. Using a texture to create 3D, however, is a scary thing for most Photoshop users. We'll take some of the mystery out of the process. Simply duplicate the original texture and alter its Blending Mode to Color Burn and reduce its Opacity to a moderate level. I used 68%. We often use textures while working with web backgrounds, textures for 3d, etc. But many of them have a common problem. When you fill an area with the pattern, seams may appear. Starting from Photoshop CS (version 8.0), filters have graphic representation to facilitate finding the right one, so you'll see the approximate effects of each one right from the start: Finally, duplicate the top layer, rotate it to 180 degree (Edit>Transform>Rotate 180 degree). Reduce the opacity to 60% and layer mode to soft light. You now have nice looking leaf texture :) 1. Create a new 300x300 pixel document and name it Liquid. Now press D and add a clouds filter the document. Then add a zigzag filter with settings [Amount: 10, Ridges: 5, Style: Pond Ripples]. For more prodominant ripples, make the Amount and ridges more. This tutorial teaches you to design an abstract background, which looks very attractive and cool. We will use Gradient, 2 filters (Glass & Emboss), layer style (mainly Lighten) and transform the object to have a cool background. Click on Gradient tool (or simply press "g" from keyboard) and select Copper gradient as shown in the figure : The dreamy blur feel I've used was to correlate to the angel. The angel is contrasted in with a fiery grungy background which may not mix with the average angel but I have added in the small sentence to relate the angel and the background together. "Will tomorrow really come?" to me means a kind of Armageddon feel. A small sentence or a piece of poetry can liven up with emotional depth of a signature and also fill some space exess space. Then flip your text diagonally like the picture below, or however you would like your anti rip pattern to look like. 5. Make sure the bottom layer is selected, click the magic wand tool somewhere on the current pattern to try and get something like (may require you clicking around on the pattern little before you get a similar shape) : 6) Still on main layer, go to image>adject>hue&saturataon; and choose a desired colour, I chose a yellowy colour, and here is what I came up with! This tutorial is another cool way to create a texture. This time a brick texture from scratch using channels and lighting effects and a pattern to start this tutorial covers a lot in a short time. 5. Now go back to your brick texture. Run the Filter>Texture>Craquelure filter with 3, 2, 0. Then run the Filter>Artistic>Plastic Wrap filter with 3, 10, 3. Finally, run the Filter>Sharpen>Sharpen More filter. And you're done. You should now have a solid brick texture like this. Today I will be going over on how to make realisic looking bubbles seen in my banner. Please take note that this requires photoshop 7 to have it scatter by itself , otherwise you will have to place each bubble seperatly. 3) Now apply Filters>Brush Stroke>Accented Edges and use these settings. Repeat this step 2 more times to get the desired effect. Here's a quick and easy way to create circular patterns. There are endless possibilities on what could turn out, so give it a shot. Colin Smith is a best-selling author, trainer, and award-winning new-media designer who has caused a stir in the design community with his stunning photorealistic illustrations composed entirely in Photoshop. He is founder of the world's most popular Photoshop resource site, PhotoshopCAFE.com, which boasts more than two million visitors. Remember that a path isn't saved until it's renamed. In the Paths palette, double-click "Work Path" and name your path. You can also at this point create a custom shape with the menu command Edit> Define Custom Shape. If you'll be creating a series of gears (or whatever compound shape you create) definitely define a new custom shape. (And keep in mind that your custom shape isn't truly saved until you use Edit> Preset Manager to save it in a set of shapes.) 1. Basic TV lines: Create a new image 2px high and 1px wide with transparent background. Zoom it to 1600% (the highest zoom point in PhotoShop) and with the Rectangular Selection Tool select the upper pixel. Fill it with black, then deselect (Ctrl+D). Then from the menu select Edit -> Define Pattern and name this texture TV line. You are done and you can now always do the cool TV like effect on your image ! 2. Square texture (grid): Create a new image 5px by 5px with Transparent background. Zoom to 1600% and select the upper 5 horizontal pixels with the Rectangular Selection Tool. Fill them with black. Than do the same with the first 5 vertical pixels. You should get it like this: This tutorial will show you how to make a cow texture. This texture can be used for many things. The same concept can also be used for making a Dalmatian (dog) texture. Enjoy. Link 2 this layer and merge them together, named "Flower". Come back to the first layer that you create it before, fill it with color #c78b8b .You will get this result: Create a new layer by pressing shift+control+n. Press "D" to regain the default black & white color. Again select linear gradient and fill the layer with it. After that I would like to bring the hatch more realistic view. For this effect create a new layer and make selection using the Rectangular Marquee Tool like on a picture below. Then drag the selected area with white to transparent gradient. 1. This tutorial will show you how to make your own photoshop patterns. Make a new file with 4x4 pixels in dimensions. Select the zoom tool. Right click on the background and select fit on screen. This will zoom your file to the limit. Here you're going to learn how to define and use patterns that are useful for adding that final touch to images that makes the difference between amateur and professional. 6. Now go to Filter > Distort > click on Glass and select Distortion, smoothness, Texture and scaling as shown in the image. This adobe photoshop 7.0 tutorial teaches you to design a nice looking desert texture. Create a new file of your choice. Fill the background with #AC926D. Link 2 this layer and merge them together, named "Flower". Come back to the first layer that you create it before, fill it with color #c78b8b .You will get this result: Learn how to have control over your diagonal patterns by being able to have that diag. line space out as much as you would like. Now fiddle with the opacity of each layer and change the blend options to either lighten or overlay and you should get something like this: Place your Cursor near the top right corner node (box). While holding down the Shift key on your keyboard, click and drag the top right corner node (box) inward towards the center of the canvas to resize our triangles layer slightly as I have done here: Step 9: Once you have filled in the whole face area, play around with the stamp tool and Alt-click bright areas of the texture to clone into highlight areas of the face. For example, pick up the shine on the beetle's back and apply it to the shine on the person's cheek. Eventually you should get something that looks like this: 4. Then take your "Gradient Tool" and press "d" to put your colors to default. Then just click somewhere and drag so you'll have a fading pattern like this one: 4. Now, open the image you want to add the gridlines to. Go to Edit -> Fill and choose Pattern from the dropdown. Then choose the Grid pattern. You will see a window appear where you have to give your pattern a name. Just as the scanlines & circle pattern, it wil be saved in the library so you can use it again in the future you are not done here these are the basic shapes that we have created with just these brushes you can create unlimited floral patterns and save them as More brushes which you can use later. Consider these as your baisic Pen tools with which you can create unlimited bushes and florishes. Making patterns is pretty easy. You start with a blank canvas, make it the size you like, and just let your imagination run wild. What I usually start with is a 10x10 pixel canvas. I then zoom in to 1000%. This allows me to work pixel by pixel so I can make the design very detailed. With the circle still selected, copy and paste the selection in a new file. You now have and attractive pattern ready :) This is a pretty easy tutorial that will teach you how to make some realistic leopard fur. The only part that is hard about this tutorial is painting the leopard spots on the canvas. So let's get started! The use the Paint bucket and set it to pattern. Then choose the pattern you just made and fill the background with it! Ok, time to add military style texture. First of all press D to set up foreground and background colors black and white, then create a new layer and apply Filter > Render > Clouds: If you want you can also go to, Filter, Brush Strokes, Accented Edges, and experiment with that, it kinda gives it a nice shiny effect. 4. We will create our nice organic texture totally with layer styles. So, go to Layer: Bevel and Emboss and just use my settings. Aaaaaaaah, what the hell is that? ;-)) I like to mix in various phototextures in various layer modes to get that dirty look...see next step! Step4: select the whole entire area (CTRL+A). with the entire area selected go to edit > define pattern. a screen will pop up, give you pattern a name. 11. Create a new document with white Background and create a new circle or as you like now create a new layer from the layer window fill with any color after that double click on this layer now select the Pattern Overlay and select the pattern newcleur shape2 . as shown below and delete a few random areas on the stripes. Repeat this with with other brushes with varying sizes, etc. You can also delete quite more as I did here which might look like it was made with aggressive driving and braking. Use the same brush on the asphalt texture with the burn tool to make it darker. You can add these on more areas of the road as well. Here's another example Fig. 4. 5. We have, in some cases, to change the layer with the pattern layer style thingy to Multiply or Color Burn to get the results we want! Remeber you can use any type of patterns to get just the result that suits you best! Good luck! Note: Unfortunately Photoshop's 'Rotate' function is very poor at re-creating some types of shapes repeatedly, especially outlines, after they've been rotated - a circle being the worst shape for it to do. So, for our particular purpose here, we'll have to create a basic shape manually first, then we'll rotate copies of that shape around to create a more complex pattern. For creating basic patterns, I find the following method produces the best looking results. 1. Create a new 165x165 pixel document and name it Stars. Now press D then X, and fill the document with white. Then add a difference clouds filter the document. Then add a craquelure filter with settings [Crack Spacing: 4, Crack Depth: 10, Crack Brightness: 10]. A few lines below you will find examples: once you have drawn your patter hit Edit > Define Pattern, then enter a name for the pattern end press OK. Now your pattern has been saved to your patterns palette; if you want to fill a layer with a pattern you simply have to hit Edit > Fill then choose Pattern in the Use Drop Down Menu and select the desired pattern in the Custom Pattern Box 1. Create a new 165x165 pixel document with a resolution of 100 and name it Techno. Now add a clouds filter. The main idea of this tutorials is not the texture in itself, its showing how to use lightning to create a very beautiful effect in any texture. So its a good idea to play around with the texture filter later, there you can get very nice textures. Note: The textures I explain in this tutorial are meant as meshes and textures for 3d-models. This is what I have been learning at school. (eg. I study GameDesign) Since textures are made with Photoshop and help you learn Photoshop better, I think this is great to learn even though the purposes are mostly 3d. I am going to teach you how to make textures of 128x128! In part 2 of the texturising-tutorial, I will cover the basic-principles of tiling a texture and making a texture tile. I will also tell why you need to tile and what tiling infact is... In part 3 of my texturising-tutorial, I will teach you how to make a texture dissolve into another texture. Because you can't build an object or a world with just one texture and bad edges. In this tutorial I will teach you how to connect 2 different textures! This is part 4 of my texturising-tutorial where I explain how to make variations of your basic-tiles. Otherwise a whole field will look mighty broing :) Texture: now we can finally really understand what textures are: nothing more than a color diffusion map you add to an object, or, if you prefer, a 2D only material. 4. Drag Rectangular Marqee Tool on the portion of the image from which you want to create the pattern. (marked with white circle) Open up your image and select your desired color for your text watermark, now select the text tool and type your text, fill your page with the text like this. 3. Open the desired texture file. Select Move tool. Drag the image on the button file and adjust so that black ellipse will get properly covered with texture. In the layer palette you will get texture layer. Keep this layer selected.
139. Mud Texture
This Photoshop tutorial will teach you how to create a brick texture effect.
Now create a new layer above your original photo layer and below your dancer cut out layer called 'clouds'. Go to filter>render>clouds to give a cloud backdrop behind your dancer. Then with your dancer layer visible, use a large, soft eraser brush to erase away all areas of cloud except those surrounding the dancer's body. So what you're basically doing is giving a cloud border to your dancer. The awesome reader submitted textures keep on rolling into the L+T mailbox. Today we have a super high-res collection from Andre Oliveira. Andre is a 20 year old designer based out of Alcoba??a, Portugal. You can find him on DeviantArt, Behance, and Flickr. The textures range in size from 3400x2600px to 6600x7900px. You can download them individually by clicking on the previews below or grab them all in a zip file at the bottom of the post.
Download a copy of this scrap texture image from CG Texture and load it into Photoshop. Then go back to our document and load the selection of the our text layer (holding down your Ctrl key and left-click on the thumbnail of the text layer in the layer palette): Open up an image that you want to use it in your text. Here, I will use a picture of a girl :) Sorry, currently I don't have any better picture.
