How to Intentionally Sing Badly when You're a Good Singer
Edited byPrincess of the Sea and 4 others
If you're a naturally good singer and can sing on-pitch without effort, singing badly (for any reason!) can be very difficult. Here's how.
Edit Steps
- 1Try not to listen to the background music; if possible, make it very quiet or turn it off. This might confuse you if you need the music to stay on-pitch.
- 2Choose a song that you don't know very well, or that you don't know at all. You're likely to screw it up just because you've never heard the right notes or can't remember them.
- 3Remember that you don't necessarily need to be off-pitch. If that's hard for you, then just sing several octaves above or below where you're vocally comfortable. This way your voice will crack or fade, and sound wrong.
- 4Performing the song badly can also affect the way people accept it. If you sing alright but stand there shaking like a leaf, they won't like it.
Edit Tips
- If you can easily find the harmony of the song, sing that rather than the melody. It can sound wrong without the melody over it.
- You can add to your bad performance by pretending to forget the words or pointing the microphone at the monitor to create feedback.
Edit Warnings
- Be sure this is what you want to do before you do it. You might end up hurting your reputation more than you're helping it. Remember that a good voice is something to be proud of, and only hide it if you have good reason!
- Singing out of your range can cause damage to your vocal cords. Do not do this often or for long periods of time.
- If you use this technique for American Idol, make sure you do it in the first round, and the judges never catch you doing it.
