A school lockdown is when the school 'locks down' because there is a dangerous and potentially armed intruder on school grounds. School lockdowns can be very scary - even if they are just drills; but there are a few simple steps you can take to help you and your classmates remain safe.

edit Steps

  1. 1
Remain calm. It is important that you stay quiet and level-headed during a lockdown. If you are feeling stressed or anxious, take deep breaths in through your nose, and out through your mouth.
  2. 2
Shut off access to the room. You should close and lock all doors and windows that may lead into the room, and you should also turn off the lights ,shut all blinds or curtains that may allow the intruder to see you.
  3. 3
Find a safe place to hide. It is ideal to hide in a far corner of the room away from the doors and windows, and also under furniture such as a desk, chair, or table. If you are in the bathroom at the time of lockdown, put your feet on the toilet seat so that a person would not be able to identify if you were in a stall by looking underneath the stall door. If you are in the hallway, run to the nearest classroom or bathroom.
  4. 4
Wait patiently. Wait quietly and patiently until you are given an "all-clear" by your teacher, a staff member, or a police officer.

edit Tips

  • Try to hide in areas that the intruder wouldn't normally think to look, like a janitor's closet or in a cabinet.
  • Don't hide in places where you don't fit, or wouldn't be comfortable sitting in for extended periods of time.
  • Try not to leave any gaps in the blinds.
  • To ease the anxiety that you or your classmates might endure, ease the tension by playing the quiet game.
  • Do not stand up or move from your hiding place unless you are given the "all-clear" by a trusted adult.
  • If the intruder is not near you, call for help. Make sure the phone volume is turned down and that you remain calm and whisper.
