Very often I receive though my Flashvalley assistance requests to find out why a bit of code is not working and very often I can see that it is caused by instances which are incorrectly named. The usual mistake is to start the name of an instance with a number, this will create a silent error and it will seem that the code is not working but the real problem will be caused by an incorrect instance name. If you are unsure of the naming conventions in actionscript I strongly advise you to read naming conventions in actionscript. Embedding fonts for dynamic text fields If you are using a particular non-standard font that won't probably be installed on the user machine to display data in dynamic text fields, it is important to embed the characters that will be used to display the data. In Flash MX 2004 just press on the little button Character on the right hand side of the Var field (pic3). In Flash 8 press on the Embed button on the right hand side of the rendering method drop down menu (pic4). pic3 pic4

You have just got an amazing idea for a new exciting flash game and you start coding and designing frantically. Suddenly you stop and you remember that you had to stop working on your last project because you could not understand your code anymore; worse, you could not locate most of it at all. Without even mentioning the fact that you had erased some precious graphics by mistake because of the random naming convention you always apply to your library assets. Right, time for a change...a new Flash developer is about to be born. Organizing your workspace Panels Are you happy with the layout of your workspace ? Why are you leaving those panels that you never use? Maybe it's time to move them or even to get rid of them. - you can drag the panel by its gripper (on the left side of the title bar). - to add a panel to an existing panel group drag the panel by its gripper onto another panel. A black line appears next to the target panel to show where the panel will be placed. - to float a panel drag the panel by its gripper and move it away from other panels. - to close a panel, do one of the following: Select the desired panel from the Window menu. Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Macintosh) the panel's title bar and select Close Panel Group from the context menu. In Adobe Flash, you can organize panels into groups (fig1). You can rearrange the order in which panels appear within panel groups. You can also create new panel groups and dock panels to existing panel groups. If you want a panel to appear on its own, separated from other panel groups, you can float the panel. This is particularly useful for panels that you want access to all the time, for example, the Help panel or the Actions panel.

Ellipsis includes more than 120 bug fixes and additions. Although they made fixes to virtually every area of Flash, they focused on improvements to the following areas:

The first thing to understand about Macromedia Flash is that, from a security standpoint, it's no different from HTML and JavaScript - anyone can read the source. While SWFs aren't human readable like HTML and JavaScript, there are numerous tools out there for taking a SWF and extracting all of its assets, including ActionScript. Because of this fact you should never hard code sensitive data inside of your SWF; doing so would be the security equivalent of putting your head in the sand like an ostrich and assuming that because you can't see anyone, they can't see you.

Earlier this week I received a site submission I found very interesting. After reviewing the site I started typing out ideas that could help the designer. Some comments were about Flash, and were some about other design aspects. After reviewing my comments to the designer I realized that these were suggestions that many designers could take into consideration when developing sites.

Sherry Holub received her degree in design from UCLA in 1995. She is now the Creative Director and Lead Designer at Southern California firm, JV Media Design ( jvmediadesign.com ). Sherry is also a member of the NAPP, AIGA, the International Academy of the Visual Arts, and the Cambridge Who's Who.

import flash.display.MovieClip;

About the second note, it is more a note to use correct syntax and not optimization. For instance, the use of ternary operations in flash AS2 can really become slow if you apply it in the wrong manner.

For this tutorial I will be using an image of a monkey and banana to demonstrate a basic drop target property. A message will be displayed when the banana is on top of the monkey.

A screen reader is a type of assistive technology that makes content accessible to users with visual impairments. Screen readers read the content of an HTML page with help from software running inside the web browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and later) called Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA). MSAA pulls the content out of the SWF file and puts it in what is called a data tree. From there, the screen reader sounds out the content in a linear fashion.

Lines 4-5: Initialize ball speed at zero.

Please keep in mind that for streaming video to work with Flash Communcation Server the file must be in FLV form. This can be done either by recording with Flash Communication Server or taking a video file and changing it with a software like Sorenson Squeeze. You can even import it into FlashMX and then export it as flv. For this tutorial you will need at least the developer version of Flash Communication Server and the installation of the Communcation Components which can both be downloaded from the Macromedia site.

Flash Component: This component is fully customizable, Just drag and drop the component onto your Flash project. No ActionScript required but an API is available for customizing. This Flash component is available only for ActionScript 3.0 (Flash CS3).

ASSetPropFlags(myproperties,['firstname','surname'],1,1);

This function accepts two arguments, both of which are required for the function to execute.

System.showSettings();

This tutorial covers creating a calculator that figures out mortgage repayments! A user enters the mortgage details and clicks a button to calculate their repayment. The source files demonstrate how it works.

1. Create any animation you like in flash

For more information on creating ColdFusion Components, see Ben Forta?s article, Introduction to ColdFusion Components, on Macromedia.com.

Put whatever you like into mcWaitForMe.

With some luck though, good stuff will start happening, unless you're using Google Chrome which will hate you and not work at all. Switch to a better browser (or Internet Explorer) immediately!

1. A useless splash page is a requirement

Introduction Grids are wonderful. Starting with a grid, you can achieve so many tremendous effects that it would be a shame to ignore them any longer. The only thing you'll need at first is a good understanding of the for loops, so I'll talk a little bit about them. You'll also need to know how to duplicate a movie clip, so if you don't know how to do that, check Kirupa's tutorial.

Rollover the Blue Buttons

Let?s start by creating our shared library. Create a new Flash document and save it as library.fla somewhere on your hard drive. Now create a new symbol (Insert > New Symbol), call it circle and set the symbol type as movie clip.

A little bit of theory

The Convert to Symbol dialog box will appear. Select the option for Graphic, and in the field for Name, enter the word "text":

News tickers seemed to be all the rave back in the day along with those loveable scrolling marquees. It's time that we did our part and help bring them back. This tutorial will help explain how to create a news ticker similar to what you see below:

this.onEnterFrame = function() {

Be nice. Keep it clean. Stay on topic. No spam.

We previously published a tutorial on how to create a simple portfolio in Flash that features a selection of thumbnails and an image display unit. This tutorial will teach you how to create an advanced portfolio that dynamically loads images and text from external sources. An example SWF movie could be seen below featuring images and texts which are being loaded at real time from external image and text files.

We are now going to configure the Parameters of each our components. Starting off with the Numeric Stepper, select it and then access the Parameters tab on the Properties Inspector. This component will be used to input the value to be converted, so we are going to set the maximum and minimum possible values for it. Set the max to a very large number like the one shown below, and the min to zero. The stepSize property sets the amount by which the number will be changed when the component arrows are pushed, set this as 1. Finally, the value property sets the default value at the start of the program, set it to zero.

Let's see something from some different angles: Workflow: Adobe Flash: Adobe Flash is a professional and complicated animated movie maker. As a Software Provider/Vendor, you might not be skilled in Adobe Flash, so you have to hire a professional Flash designer to make the software demo for you. The designer has to spend some time to get familiar with your software before he starts the demo making. After that, he makes the layout for the demo and try to fulfill the demo according to your requirement. Demo software: Most demo software applications are designed to be easy to use. With one of them, you just can make the demo by yourself to express your idea. Demo software applications do not have so abundant functionalities as Adobe Flash, but it is powerful to make stunning demos with easy operation.

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

Creating an effect

The aim of this tutorial is to cover various methods of the Date Object as well as using Arrays.

Select Flex Project.

When you embed an SWF in your HTML, it?s default behavior is to scale to fill the width and height of the browser window. This means that if you create a SWF at 600?00pixels and view it on a browser sized at 1024?68 your beautifully designed 600?00px SWF will scale to 1024?68 and look .

You want your own site ? Here is resolve for your problem.
