Most Photoshop images are going to be in 8 bit pixel mode or 16 bit pixel mode. In a Photoshop image, a pixel is a small square of digital information. The pixels are laid out in a mathematical grid and so do not deteriorate when copied - the mathematical pattern is just reconstructed. So what does this mean in terms of image size and quality.
New images will appear on this page, when they feel in the mood, which will be often. They will all have been given some degree of digital treatment. Some images will come with comments, some not.
An existing article on this site called RGB and CMYK in Light and Photography explains the different components of light and how they work in photography. This article considers which mode, RGB or CMYK, is more appropriate in digital imaging work.

In this Adobe Photoshop tutorial on digital photo editing, we're going to learn how incredibly easy it is to give someone a digital nose job (not that anyone we know would need it, of course!). This photo editing technique is so simple and easy, you'll be tempted to use it on photos of people who honestly don't need it. Or at least, that's what you can tell them when they ask you why you made their nose smaller. You simply had to because it was so much fun and so easy to do!

Once you've placed all your drops, make two folders called "Ink drop - Front" and "Ink drop - BG," as we want to give some simple depth to the ink drops. Carefully choose the ones you want in the foreground and the ones you in the background. Then put the layers in the corresponding folders. Now select the "Inkdrop - BG" folder, and set the Opacity to 60%.

It's all about image size and the answer lies within Photoshop (Menu: Image>Image Size). When you open Image Size, you're confronted with a dialog box that has two sections. The top one shows you the current file size and dimensions in pixels. Multiply those pixel dimensions and you'll arrive at the resolution of your camera.

Sure, there are a few things you can do before you press the shutter to improve your photos, but you might be surprised to find out what you can do in the digital darkroom once the lens cap has gone back on.
After recently grumbling about the smoggy haze in some of my photos from Beijing, Gary B. sent me a tip from Luminous Landscape about how to tweak contrast to make subtle details pop. The original article was geared to making subtle highlights like shadows standout for printed photos, but it seems to work for improving the look of images taken on a couple hazy mornings in China. The trick involves using some kind of Unsharp Mask filter, which as defined by the Photoshop Elements help file is a technique for giving the illusion of greater detail in an image (sharpness) by increasing the contrast between the light and dark areas of the image. Photoshop, Photoshop Elements and Paint Shop Pro all have an Unsharp Mask built in. I haven't found a good freeware plugin solution for this particular technique if you happen to use some other tool.
From time to time, the technology of digital cameras can introduce unwanted artifacts. One type of artifact that you can fix with Photoshop is an excessive amount of colour noise or colour blooming. You'll most likely see this problem when shooting with a high ISO setting (typically over 400 ISO) or with a low-end digital camera (cell phone cameras). The added colour artifacting doesn't represent the true colour of an image. I call this phenomenon The Colour Gremlins. Left alone to live in your digital file, they can play havoc whenever you try to use Curves or employ any other colour manipulation method.

The Color Fill 1? layer that we created in the previous steps has a layer mask on it, which allows parts of the layer (ie, the colour) to be hidden or shown at will. You do this using the paint brush tool and painting the mask on. White paint makes the layer visible, black paint makes it invisible.
... Create a layer by double clicking on the photo layer. Mask out the bottle (I'm not showing how to do this, because there are a lot of tutorials on the web for that), and create a black filled layer below the bottle layer. (left it invisible for the easier understanding of this step)...

The article given here was written for Adobe Photoshop 5,6,7,CS, and Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 and 3. Most photographers who are serious about improving their portrait taking skills have realized that a beautiful background can greatly enhance their photographs. Muslins are a very popular choice among professionals. However, they can get very costly at several hundred dollars each. For the professional who is well established, this may not seem too much, but for the hobbyist, this may be a stretch. A less costly alternative is a digital background. With a digital background, one can get the look and feel of a professional looking portrait without the additional cost of muslin. Many Photography websites also sell digital backgrounds on cd. In some casesas low as $15.00 dollars for an assorted collection. As with anything elseyou usually get what you pay for. Some of these pre-made digital backgrounds are not worth the cd they're printed on, but some of them are very beautifully made. Even so, you may be wondering how YOU can make your very own digital background. That being said, the following information will help guide you along the way. Okay, let's create a digital backdrop using Adobe Elements 2.0. We will create an 8x10 300dpi (dpi = dots per inch or ppi = pixels per inch) digital backdrop. For printing purposes, 300dpi is strongly recommended for a high quality print. This will also create a large file approximately 20.6megs. Having a fast processor (Pentium 4 or Athlon XP) and at least 256megs of ram will definitely help. Also having your screen resolution on your monitor set to its highest setting 24 or 32bit will give the best results. Okay let's begin! If you haven't already opened Photoshop Elements, do so now. 1. Click on File 2. Make a copy of the background layer you just created by pressing Control-J on your keyboard. If you look at the bottom right corner of your monitor, you should see an exact copy of your background layer named layer 1. 3. Select the foreground color for your background by clicking on the foreground square on your toolbar the black one. (Bottom left) 4. The Color Picker window should now be open. Select a light red by clicking on the top right corner of the color palette. Click ok. 5. Now select the background color by clicking on the background square on your toolbar the white one. (Bottom right) 6. The Color Picker window should open again. Select a darker red by clicking halfway below the lighter red you previ...

Sometimes the digital art contains white or other elements that get in the way of coloring the image effectively. What I suggest, is first removing the white. The easiest way that I have found to do this, is by installing this filter: Mac's Remove White. [This filter was developed by Mark Mclaren and is free for download]. Please reference the readme.txt file for details and installation instructions.
Welcome to part one of the two part Digital Coloring for coloring comics Series. In this tutorial we will explore how to prepare line art for coloring comics in Adobe Photoshop. If you require line art to practice with you can get it here. This tutorial(s) makes use of the channels palette extensively, so if you are unfimiliar or uncomfortable with them you can use layers with some modifications, but it is recommended that you knuckle down and get into using channels as they are key to using Adobe Photoshop to its full potential.
The key to producing great digital painting is Ttime. Most people who are new to Adobe Photoshop will stop after the first round of applying colour to their illustration. By building up separate layers of colour, the ?beginner? art will begin to look more spectacular. The main power of doing your colour work, or any work for that matter, in separate layers is you can control virtually every aspect of the final look. With some experimenting you can get some interesting and sometimes unexpectedly great results.
Depth of Field (DOF) is that amount of your shot that will be in focus. Large depth of field means that most of your image will be in focus whether it's close to your camera or far away (like the picture to the left where both the foreground and background are largely in focus - taken with an aperture of f/22).
Really, a good way to combat the problem in low light you can try using a higher ISO. Your ISO simply means the amount of sensitivity of light falling on your sensor. For example take traditional photography as a comparison to digital photography. Traditional photography ISO will be film sensitivity. (ISO in traditional terms works with film speed as well.)
Digital photography has a lot of fantastic opportunities. When I say opportunities I mean artistic opportunities. You see succeeding in digital photography goes way beyond just knowing how to take a digital photograph in the technical sense. You see need artistic ability and knowledge too. Digital Photography, if applied artistically, can open up the doors of creativity for many, many years to come.
In Digital Photography ISO measures the sensitivity of the image sensor. The same principles apply as in film photography - the lower the number the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain. Higher ISO settings are generally used in darker situations to get faster shutter speeds (for example an indoor sports event when you want to freeze the action in lower light) - however the cost is noisier shots. I'll illustrate this below with two elargements of shots that I just took - the one on the left is taken at 100 ISO and the one of the right at 3200 ISO (click to enlarge to see the full effect).
In film photography it was the length of time that the film was exposed to the scene you're photographing and similarly in digital photography shutter speed is the length of time that your image sensor 'sees' the scene you're attempting to capture.
In digital photography there is one thing that, for crisp images, you simply must know about. And that's the proper use of your aperture. When you use your aperture the right way in your digital photography you can really influence a lot of creative factors. What I am about to tell you will help your digital photography a lot, because you'll be discovering a professional digital photography technique.
One of those smaller techniques that a number of readers of DPS have been writing to me about recently is the use of shutter release cables (or remote shutter release devices).
Take a Control Shot - Before you start experimenting - switch your camera to auto mode, make sure your flash is turned off and take a shot of the waterfall. As you do - take notice of the exposure that the camera sets. Your camera will almost certainly choose an exposure that freezes the water somewhat. This photo will be a bit of a reference point to compare your shots to later and to use as a basis for your exposures.
My guess is that we???re afraid. Afraid of the learning curve and afraid that the quality just isn???t there unless we spend an ungodly amount of our hard earned cash on some scary looking gigantic array of confusing and awkward, let alone ???how am I going to learn how to use this stuff??? equipment.
What are the guidelines? When you're outside on a nice sunny day, shoot ISO 200. Cloudy days and bright indoor locations should use ISO 400, and darker locations should go with an ISO 800 film or faster, depending on what you're dealing with.
Part 1 ? Product Shot Photography ? Why you should use a light tent and what the difference is between using a light tent versus no tent or using Flash.
I will try not to be too technical, but I think if one is going to invest several hundred dollars into a digital camera he or she can devote 15-20 minutes to "investigation" for better understanding of technical differences and camera opportunities and (even more important) for better understanding his or her needs.
Considering an image at 100 dots per inch that is one square inch in size. It is comprised of 100 X 100 pixels. Now changing this image four-times to four square inches. This image is quite clear. Now the same 100 X 100 dots exist, but with only 25 dots per inch. The appearance becomes grainy. This is the factor know as resolution that determines this quality of image. Hence it can now be interpreted by any person what the importance of resolution is and where it is required in the filed of photography. While purchasing a digital camera, resolution is a very important factor to take into account when settling upon buying a particular one.
As we all know, cameras come in various format sizes???for example, film cameras of large, medium, 35mm, and APS formats, and, more recently, a number of digital cameras with varying sensor sizes. The 35mm full frame camera has been the most popular camera type and typically is used as the reference point. Let???s take an example and visualize what the scene would look like when viewed through a 100mm lens on a 35mm camera. (Please see Figures 1, 2, and 3.)
The area of coverage of a lens is independent of its focal length and is directly related to the film format or sensor size. With a 35mm SLR camera, a 50mm lens is considered a ?normal? lens. It produces an image on the film that approximates a person's field of vision. When used with a small sensor, a 50mm lens becomes a telephoto lens recording only a narrow angle of view.
The important thing about ISO and film is how varied films with different ISO's relate to each other. Low numbers50 or 100represent less sensitivity. High numbers400 or 800show that a film is more light sensitive. The numbers are mathematically proportional so that, when two films are compared, doubling or having a number represents twice, or half, the sensitivity, or speed, of the film. Once you choose a particular film, you must use the whole roll at that film's specific ISO setting.
Before making a comparison it is important to discuss the significance of the subject matter, in this case the zoom. Well a zoom lens has more than a few portable glass components inside it. By adjusting these components, the focal length of the lens can be altered. Modifying the focal length alters the view distance as well as reduces the field of view, thereby making the projected image to appear larger.
A point and shoot digital camera is designed to do just that - take snapshots. They provide limited flexibility with options, although many newer models have some limited options for special effects. The image quality from a point and shoot digital camera is generally good enough for common uses, such as auction photos, and even 4 X 6 prints.
There are a lot of wonderful aspects to digital photography and getting close up digital photos are one of them. When I say 'close up' I am talking about taking a digital photo with a very short depth of field (DOF). To understand how to get suburb results for close up digital photography I?ll first explain some of the photography terms so you can learn faster.
If you're shooting a portrait or close up where the subject fills the frame completely and your shooting in bright sunlight where the person is parlay back-lit, the answer is yes.
There was this guy who owns a state-of-the-art, high-end digital SLR. Since it was my first time to meet him, I initially thought that he could be a photographer, hobbyist or by profession, when he brandished the hi-tech gear. This initial impression only lasted until I saw one of his shots ? man, there was no composition! What waste of money ? unless of course, he manages to get acquainted with photography, even the basics at the least. Otherwise, the digicam ends up as the display instead of it churning out images for display.
Having lost count of the number of people who have asked me: "have you gone digital?" I am always left wondering why it's such a much-asked question. The camera is only a tool in which a photographer creates an image. His personal ability to create a unique image remains the same.
The good news is that there are a few easy tricks that can significantly and sometimes even completely reduce the effects of red-eye. Here's a few of the simple tricks that I've discovered that make my pictures worth mounting on the wall.
Selective Color ??? Controls several different colors and can do just about anything to a specific color. This is a great adjustment layer to use when a specific color is untrue in the photograph, such as a green shirt looking blue.
