In this tutorial, we will be looking at one of the many new features introduced into Adobe PhotoShop Creative Suite 4, Content-Aware Scaling (or CAS). CAS uses a rather complex mathematical algorithm that decides what is important in an image, and what is expendable, when it comes to altering or discarding information upon resizing. However, it wouldn't be an Adobe product if you couldn't manipulate the function and use it to its best advantage. In this tutorial, we will explore a few ways of getting the best out of the Content-Aware Scale.
That covers the essential options in the General Preferences. Now let's look at a brand new category in Photoshop CS3 - the Interface.
If you find that Photoshop's default number of Undo steps is rarely enough, there's a couple of things you can do. One is to rethink how you're working on your images in Photoshop so you don't need so many Undo steps all the time. The other is to simply add more Undo steps, which you can do by adding more History States. If you're using Photoshop CS2 or earlier, go up to the Edit (Win) / Photoshop (Mac) menu at the top of the screen, choose Preferences, and then choose General. You'll see an option near the top of the dialog box called History States. Simply type in the number of History States you need. Here, I've increased mine to 30:
If you've upgraded to Photoshop CS3 from an earlier version of Photoshop and you already knew where the History States option was, you'll find that it's no longer in the same place in Photoshop CS3. It's still found in the Preferences dialog box, but as of Photoshop CS3, Adobe has added a new section to the Preferences called Performance, and they've moved the History States option into the new Performance section. Go up to the Edit (Win) / Photoshop (Mac) menu at the top of the screen, choose Preferences , and then choose Performance . Over on the far right of the Preferences dialog box, you'll see the History States option. Simply change the value in the input box to add more History States. Here, I've increased mine to 30:
Adobe made some drastic changes to the user interface in Photoshop CS3, leaving many long-time Photoshop users feeling like beginners again. But whether you really are new to Photoshop or just a little confused about where everything is in Photoshop CS3, having the Tool Tips option enabled is a great way to help you find what you're looking for. With Tool Tips enabled, which it is by default, Photoshop pops up either the name or a brief description of the various user interface items as you hover your mouse over them. While Tool Tips can certainly be helpful, they can also be annoying to anyone who no longer needs them. Fortunately, we can easily turn the Tool Tips on or off from within Photoshop's Preferences.
If you give it some time, you'll probably find you prefer the new single column design for the toolbar, but whichever layout you prefer, Photoshop CS3 makes it easy to switch between the two.
In Photoshop CS2 or earlier, go up to the Edit (Win) / Photoshop (Mac) menu at the top of the screen, choose Preferences, and then choose General. You'll see an option in the middle of the Preferences dialog box called Show Tool Tips. Click inside the checkbox to the left of the option's name to show or hide the Tool Tips. With the checkmark visible, the Tool Tips are enabled. When the checkmark is not visible, the Tool Tips are disabled:

Now, with the addition of the Adjustments and Masks panels image editing becomes a non-stop affair. You can switch between all the adjustment types (Levels, Curves, Hue/Saturation etc.) grouped in the Adjustments panel without the need to first commit your changes. Each adjustment is dynamically and non-destructively applied to the photo, providing a 'tweak and tweak again' workflow where image makers can combine a range of changes gradually adjusting each with reference to their combined effect. Cool! This approach is much more reminiscent to the way that Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom works and represents the future of professional image manipulation.
