If you use photographs as the main form of reference material for your paintings, you are in good company. Just to name a few artists who are known for this: Gustave Caillebotte, Edgar Degas, and more recently Eric Fischl, Gerhard Richter and Chuck Close. Most recently, John Currin, who recently had a major retrospective at the Whitney, buys stock photographs and bases his paintings on them. With the advent of digital technology the creation, printing and use of reference images has never been easier. Almost all of my paintings are based on some sort of photographic reference material. In the past, I used snapshots, film stills, and photos from magazines and newspapers.
Serious photography hobbyists and certainly those who may want to sell their photographic work will benefit tremendously from the superiority of the RAW format. The good news is that several reasonably priced prosumer digital cameras now offer the RAW image format. The Canon Digital Rebel XT 8 MP camera (est. retail $650) offers both JPEG and RAW formats. Likewise, the Sony Cybershot DSCR1 10.3 MP camera (est. retail $850) offers RAW image capture and an impressive array of features. For die-hard Kodak consumers, the new Kodak Easyshare P880 8MP camera (est. retail $500) offers a wide-angle optical zoom and RAW file support. Last, but not least, the Nikon Coolpix 8700 8 MP camera (est. retail $600) offers RAW mode image recording and many of the features commonly sought after by professional photographers.
The next great photographersif there are to be anywill have to find a way to reclaim photography's special link to reality. And they'll have to do it in a brand-new way.
If you are planning on using Software or Hardware Calibration, you'll need to know about ICC Profiles. These provide a way to ensure consistent color. When calibrating with software, you will go through a series of on-screen displays much like those found in Visual Monitor Calibration Tests, only much more detailed. Using this software, you will make precise adjustments and create a specific ICC Profile; however, some find they can achieve adequate results using generic ICC Profiles. Hardware-based calibration involves measuring of light using tools, in addition to software. For those in the digital art field, the above method is recommended.
Most often, however, the cause is camera shake. This is something difficult to avoid without a tripod. Even on a tripod, the very act of pressing a button to snap a picture can shake a camera sufficiently enough to produce an out of focus image. This is why most artists opt on using the timer-mode to capture their image 'hands-free'.
Most non-professionals tend to shoot from where they are standing, without taking into mind the composition of their subject matter in the photo. In order to avoid making this mistake, ask yourself three questions:
While grunge has its origins in the 90s, recently the style has been gaining in popularity once more. In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a dirty, urban-style image using both well-known techniques as well as a few new ones. You will learn to easily extract complex shapes and we will also create our own grunge texture.
The creation of ASCII (or text) artwork is a discipline older than the internet itself. Ranging from simple objects created with punctuation marks to fully-fledged A4-sized masterpieces, text-art is a unique and often very difficult to master artform. But why spend hours with notepad when you can simply fake ASCII art using Photoshop in under 5 minutes? Preparation: Before you begin this tutorial you will need a sample image with strong contrasts between the light and dark areas. Greyscale portraits are best, but not essential - any object will work provided that you are willing to put in a little extra effort. You will also need to know the dimensions of your source image prior to the first step.
Step 11: To experiment with more advanced shapes, we will make an isometric cylinder! This is fairly simple - just make an iso-square and draw a circle inside of it, on a new layer. Drawing it in bright red will help you easily isolate the circle from the square as well. To draw the circle in my example, I whipped out the Elliptical Marquee Tool, selected a circle that fit inside the square and then used my one pixel brush, on a new layer, to make it one pixel thick. I then duplicated it several times because there were parts that were transparent.
One of the many capabilities of photoshop, is that of photographic manipulation of all kinds. The aim of this tutorial is to demonstrate a particular kind of photographic manipulation - that of Photo Art. You will need to download this picture for the tutorial. (You can of course, use one of your own. This technique can be applied to many different types of photographs).
Over the next couple of days, we will be teaching you how to brush your abstract artworks nicely, so that they may gain a beautiful scheme and give your works of art a nice environment.
Now for the shadows and highlkights. I know two ways how we can do this. The first one is, create a duplicate of the original iamge, in my case, just Rihanna, put it on top of the layer palete. Go Filter>Noise>Reduce Noise chek the "Remove JPEG Artifact" box, play a little with the options until you are satisfied and click OK. Now put this layer in Overlay Mode. Save the image as JPEG file and open it in Illustrator. Once in there, select the image and choose Object>Live Trace>Tracing Options...and experiment with the options there. Once you finish, save the file as JPEG and open it once more in Photoshop and continue with your work......
Convert photos to rust on metal art with this Photoshop Elements tutorial. In this tutorial, you will learn how to create metal and rust textures and apply lighting effects. Click to find out how to create your own rusted metal art digitally with Photoshop Elements.
To create this rusted metal art with Photoshop, we first have to create a metal and rust texture. This can be done by combining several filters. Then, using the photo as a layer mask, the rust texture is masked out. Finally, a lighting effect is added to each texture to remove the flat look.
Title: Cool New circular art using photoshop techniques Description: In this photoshop tutorial I have used techniques to use photoshop tools to draw a cool new circular art
Create a new layer called 'paint light', and you guessed it - paint in the highlight based on data from the original photo. This time just use a watercolor brush at 10%, color: white. Again, just be very free and rough. With both your dark/light layers if you want to make a particular area more intense just brush over it several times to build up it's opacity.
This method severely limits the kind of concept art you can produce, requiring you to chance upon the right source material. So long as readers realize that this is not how concept artists create visionary art without limitations, then it will help them to understand at least a bit how source material can feed your inspiration. As this stands, it promotes blatantly crutching yourself on the work of others only to project an outward image that you are a concept artist, when in fact it is a misrepresentation. True concept art comes from passion, dedication, and practice. Lots of practice. This is not to say that concept art doesn't feed from the world around it, but it is generally a regurgitation at least, rather than copy-and-pasting.
Next, create a new folder on top of all the layers and name it "circles." Also, create a new layer into this folder and use my settings for the Brush Tool (B) and the same color you used for the line art #f8efde.
Sean, thank you for better explaining the style to me. I guess I'm still a bit put off and/or confused on the whole scope as this has been done for years under the guise of 'vector art'. And typically vector art lends itself to that banded look unless someone approaches it in another stylistic manner other than direct tracing (hyper photo realism using gradient meshes out the whazoo or pop art using simplistic shapes, for example) . As for vector artwork becoming Vexel artwork once it's exported to a rasterized format I think that's a bit strange and an unindustry-like classification method. It's like saying if I take a photo and I turn it into a CMYK halftone to print in a magazine it's no longer a photograph, or I take a photo of my design work for my portfolio it's no longer design, or if I make a logo and apply it to a wall it is now interior design not branding, etc.
@Mark - This is a screencast from elsewhere on the web posted here as a reference. There is not a PLUS file for this. Typically our PLUS files are for written tutorials. Thx.
was told by my old jazz teacher that the best art is created when you have something to say. I have always painted with that idea in mind so every piece of art that I create tells a story of my life. When you read the descriptions, I'm sure you will relate since we all go through similar situations - both good and bad. If you like what you see, please feel free to contact me and let me know. Thanks - Tim

Photoshop Fine Art Effects Cookbook "Cubism" (Pages 140 and 141 from the Painters & Printmakers section of Photoshop Fine Art Effects Cookbook - courtesy of O'Reilly Media.) Over a period of seven years leading up to 1914 and the outbreak of the First World War, Cubism marked a decisive break from representative painting, reflecting a radical fissure in politics, art, and culture. Led by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, the Cubist painters pursued an abstract, geometric approach. Cubist paintings often look as if the subject has been constructed from a hundred or more snapshots, all taken from different angles. Where people are represented, they are sharply angular and feature masks that strongly suggest an African influence. Familiar objects, such as violins and guitars, are sliced up and the reassembled fragments skewed and rotated; they are often accompanied by lettering and musical notes. Color sometimes remains, though grays and browns predominate. Using a photograph of an old guitar and a simple background, no special effort was required other than using a high sensor speed (ISO) so that the camera could be hand-held under dim lighting conditions.

In step 12, after you add the hue/saturation layer, right-click it in the Layers window and select 'Merge Down'. This will combine the 2 layers into 1. Then you duplicate this layer, add a hue/saturation layer and merge it down also, so in total you should have 2 layers. Hope that helps.
Interaction design is an applied art like, say, furniture making. It always has a purpose, and the craftspeople strive to make the furniture both aesthetically and functionally- beautiful. And it always, always has constraints: resources, time, needs.
Kozik has turned Oakley Hijinx? into a fiendish satire of authoritarianism, jingoism and a few more ?-isms? we?d have to look up. Good luck to anyone trying to define his brilliantly twisted view of the universe. We just know an electroshock of creativity when we see one, and it won?t be long before this masterpiece sells out. Mauricio Hern??ndez - www.macromedios.net It looks very nice, i like specially the man with the drawer in his mouth, it remindsme some Dal??'s paintings. Good compilation
nice illustrations. but moleskin is just a brand. like saying 'Beautiful examples of Mac art - as if the brand has anything to do with the creativity. hmf.
Rendering Step 4 Now is the time to start adding details like tattoos, piercings and earrings, refining here and there, tweaking some areas a little, and generally checking the overall look of the painting; the mood, values, colours, etc. (Please note that I have been doing this throughout the whole process.)
Sketching in your Character As we now know, this is how I prefer to start, as I think it is the easiest way to begin. By simply laying down a basic sketch, as you can see, I have my female figure outlined. At first, I thought I would give her a 'Cruella Deville' ('101 Dalmatians') look, but as I progressed, I took out the cigarette and gave her a more smug look. Basically, you can use references if you want, or you can just channel your own female look. I used a reference for mine, as I can't sketch females that well, yet. Try to keep your lines very clean, almost as if you're inking in a comic book page - thin lines, nothing too bold and you can achieve something very simply. Simple is better - you don't want to make the figure too complex because you should remember that females are soft, not hard-shaped like males. The outfit is completely up to you, if you want something stylish, ugly, futuristic, it's really down to what's in your head. For her, I wanted to create a stylish 70's look; European, fringed outfit, simple, but nice. As for her hair, all you have to worry about is just the basic shape of it - don't go and make a lot of tiny threads and strands of hair, because it will make no difference in the end.
Stage 1: Rough it up Before you start your masterpiece you must build its raw foundation, creating a composition that is both simple yet complex enough to capture the eye. I use intersecting lines (crossed) and positive and negative space (basically B/W) to make my images visually interesting and readable. Even when it is reduced it still needs to retain its clarity compositionally. All this may seem elementary but when you are doing work that will print small it's a key point to keep in mind.
The dress of my character should be a close-fitting corsage, with rotting rags hanging from it. I could almost see her n front of me: Her hair would be dancing in the wind. I thought her personality would be similar to the strange enchantress in the movie 'Sleepy Hollow' directed by Tim Burton. So I drew up the first idea I had in pencil, but in a way she looked too harmless. She looked more like a goddess than an evil temptress. And that I didn't want. So I started all over, this time taking some reference material. I used images of Kylie Minogue's face and Victoria Becham's features (not just her breasts!!!).
There are plenty of PSD to HTML/CSS template tutorials All over the internet. I recommend using Fireworks instead of Photoshop to mock up web layouts, it's WAY easier when it comes time to take apart your layout and code the site.

Who doesn???t like a little Tees action? Personally, original t-shirt designs catch my eye more than most graphic art that I see. Mainly because I can wear it. Functional art, oh baby! Another reason I take such staunch note of Tees, is due to the nature of print design. It???s an underrated source of artistic expression, probably due to it???s small scale presentation, whereas the grandiose display that most graphic art seems to get cast it in a more ???respectable??? light. And for that, I call shenanigans!

01. Format: We should determine the format that we are going to use. We'll need to work into that specific area; usually the standard sizes divisions for the basic sheet (66 X 96 cms.) 02. Crop marks: We can find "crop marks" in every corner of the artwork -They show us the place where the printed artwork will be cut- (The yellow line). You will notice that the image exceeds the area: That is called "bleed", and helps avoiding white edges at the cutting time. All the artwork (including crop marks) should be into that paper's area. 03. The image: The image (A bitmap, in this case) should be linked to our file that goes to colors separation, and this one needs to be CMYK (If you'll print it into 4-color process). 04. Texts: We need to be sure about keep in vector format the texts in the art, with some exceptions of course (in case of create texts with some effects). The texts will be converted to outlines or include the fonts with the file to film to avoid missing fonts. One last quick verification can include: + Convert texts to outlines. + Be sure all the content is in CMYK color mode, including all the images. + Unlock all the elements and layers in the artwork. Working in that way we can reduce the errors in our jobs at the printing time. I must remember you all that these are no rules, is some kind of "method" that I use based in my experience and investigation and only is a basic review about this topic. More useful information can be found in the others tutorials by me. For more detailed info, remember to check your local libraries. God bless you!
For the 2 Years I used a font called CassandraTwo, you can download it at www.dafont.com. Basicaly what I recreate the font for the number 2 using the Rectangle Tool (U), Ellispe Tool (U), and Pen Tool. That way I was able to apply different effects to the each part of the number.
Create a new layer. Mark it out, so mark the previous layer and press Ctrl+E. Next we shall rotate the canvas (Image>Rotate Canvas>90 CW) and only after that the Free Transform option will be used for situating the layer on the central part of the picture.
Borders can sometimes make or break any type of art, whether it's a signature or some photography. In this tutorial I will teach you how to create borders that will go well with your art.
Next we have to make a click on Add a Mask option on the bottom part of the layers' palette, but this click should be made on each layer containing the stripe. Select after that the Gradient Tool (G) to represent the half opacity effect on the stripes' ends. On the vertical stripe the half opacity should be present on its top and its bottom.
Through this Photoshop tutorial you will learn to create Modern painting using Photoshop Tools. The dimensions used in this tutorial is : width 300px, height 300px and resolution 72px. This tutorial demonstrates the use of Pen, Rectangular Marquee and Brush Tools. At the end of this tutorial you will be able to create your own paintings using simple techniques in Photoshop.
Now here comes the hardest part of the tutorial, you make or break the tutorial here. Make something similar to what I've shown below in the animation below.
The first thing I do is start collecting as many photos of buildings and city landscapes as possible. I look for textures and references, to get a sense of how a building was constructed and how I can recreate it with Photoshop. For this example I went through my archive of photos taken in New York, Los Angeles, Stockholm and Copenhagen among other cities.
The original image can be seen in Figure 1. It is a photograph of a vacant gas station building in Ashland Oregon. I really liked the art deco feel of this building. I also generally liked the colors and composition. But I wanted to do something to really bring it to life and give it an illustrated or painted, rather than a photographic, quality.
In this Photoshop 7 tutorial we will employ the Equalize, Hard Light, Chalk and Charcoal and Spatter filters to create a painting with strong colors and texture.
Don't merge or rasterize your shape layers. As long as all your layers are shape layers then you have a vector piece of art...That means you can scale the original psd up and down in Photoshop and it will remain perfect and unpixelated!! The final output will NOT BE a vector file (it will be a rasterize jpg etc), to output a vector file you need to use Adobe Illustrator.
Open the photo you want to turn into vector. This photo is going to be your background layer. Create a new layer above your background layer, rename it to white background and fill it with white color. Turn the visibility on this layer off by clicking the eye next to it. Create a new layer above your white background layer and call it outlines. We are going to draw all the outlines from the image on to this layer. Lets do that. Make sure your brush has a 2 pixel diameter. Get the pen tool and start outlining the person on your photo. Hair, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, lips, clothes, detail on clothes, nails, eyebrows... After a long, long work, this is what you should have:
The head is the base. We want to hurt this guy. So we need something that looks very ugly, so as scars. In this picture I use a scar and another shot from the stock-photo section on deviantart.
Start by making a new document in Photoshop - something around 768 x 1024 pixels will be fine for this tutorial (learning purposes). But if you were working for print or something, you would want to make it much larger, using 300-600 resolution.
I went to the art museum and noticed the new gallery titled "Modern Art." A lot of abstract stuff was there and the motto was "art in any form." I decided to use my immagination and create some abstract pieces of art. Use your immagination to figure out what each image can represent.
Next, select the 'Layer Thumbnail' of Layer 0 (highlighted in green below), then go to the 'Image/Adjustments/Threshold' menu command and adjust the slider value to 77 as I have captured below.
In this Photoshop 7 tutorial we will employ the Equalize, Hard Light, Chalk and Charcoal and Spatter filters to create a painting with strong colors and texture. The image is part of a larger photo, taken with a digital camera and cropped to a file size of 1.8 megapixels.
New PhotoShop Line Art Trick - Tom Richmond You can use this trick to create as many layers of line and colored objects as you want and merge them at will to create layered images.

To create an impressionistic effect in a photo, we have to emphasize texture and color at expense of detail. Our aim is to create a photo-art painting in the style of Claude Monet. The image has a file size of 3.9 megapixels.
As a painter, I use photography to help me visualize composition, color, light and shade values. Today's computer technology offers an unprecedented freedom in creative photo manipulation. On this website I present a sample of photographic images that, in my opinion, has successfuly met my standard of what a truly digital photo-art painting should look like, in the realist style of Hopper, if only in the technical aspects of form simplication, purity of color and pleasing contrasts. I have tested this process in hundreds of photos of diverse subject matter to see how it performs, and how it can help even the most unpretentious snapshot achieve pleasing aesthetic results.
Title: Photoshop Tutorial- create a framed art In this photoshop tutorial I will teach you to draw cool framed art. Lets create a framed art using photoshop tools like Paint bucket, Gradient tool, Elliptical marquee tool, Rectangular marquee tool. I have also tried to include some other effects.
1- Ok people, to use this tutorial, you will need basic knowledge in photoshop. You should have read my other two tutorials, and the most important thing, is that you will need an abstract render! you can use your selfmade, or get some from here.To start, open your render, then you create a new document. Set the background to black and drag over your render. Place it in a perspective that you like, you can duplicate the layer and make it darker or lighter what ever you feel like. Good if you followed me to hear. your done with the first step. ( View Image )
In Tutorial 2 we transformed an ordinary photo into a dramatically different piece of artwork. While there were many different manipulations involved, the primary tools used to achieve the final effect were to invert the image and to manipulate the color. Here we will do a variation on that technique, and combine it with image distortion for quite a different effect. I took this photograph with my Canon D30 digital camera using a 28-135 zoom lens. This particular camera gives a three megapixel, high quality noise-free image. In bright, sunny conditions like this, you can get a high-quality image using any medium to high quality consumer digital camera. Using a digital camera to capture the image means we can avoid the additional step of scanning the image, as we would have to do if we had captured the image on film. Three megapixels is enough resolution for the types of manipulations we are going to do, which will generally have a smoothing effect on the image. Set your camera to save the image in the highest quality jpg or raw mode.

To create the necessary distortions you can either use Liquify or Displace. Liquify gives you total control, but it's painfully slow and needs a lot of work. The good thing about Displace is that it does the job for you almost automatically. The way the displace filter works is very simple. It moves the pixels of your layer around to simulate the uneven surface. You will need a displacement map, that is a psd file. The light and dark areas of this displacement map will determine which pixel moves where. Let's look at an example. As a first step you need to duplicate the layer you want to put the artwork on. Blur this duplicate layer to create a smooth surface without the texture of the image and save your psd file. This saved file with our blurred layer on top will be our displacement map. From now on don't save your document until you are finished, otherwise you will overwrite the saved file, that is going to be used as a displacement map. You can switch off the blurred layer and place your artwork as a separate layer in your document. If you have typed up something select Layer/Rasterize/Type from the menu. Rotate and distort your artowork to match its angles and perspective to your image. Select the Filter/Distort/Displace... and type in Horizontal scale 0% and Vertical scale 12%. You can experiment with these settings later. Select your psd file as your displacement file in the pop-up window. Your artwork is distorted to follow the light and dark areas of your image. Light areas of your displacement map will move the pixels of your artwork up, dark areas will move them down to follow the curves of the textile. As a last step you need to select Multiply or Overlay as your layer behavior, depending on the colors you used. Make a mosaic. I used a little piece of mosaic. Copy-paste the mosaic till it's big enough and blend the different layers. Because I didn't want white lines between the mosaic tiles, I had to make the lines black. I altered the hue with -180 and the inverted the image (ctrl+i) Then I made it less bright. Make a new image. Duplicate the white background layer and give it a soft color. Paste the mosaic on the new layer and make sure you still have a border left.
Step 26 –And to finish it up, we’re going to add some text to it. The font used here is Garamond, set to smooth on 12 px. The color is one picked from the signature (#232d1b here) and then place it somewhere you like.

Most people may not notice it, but the text that you use in your artwork can either make it or break it. There are a few basics that can point you in the right way to typography, and that is what we are learning today. First off, we will just show examples of designs with text and we will discuss what makes it good, and what makes it bad.
Even though there are only a few simple steps, this tutorial is more advanced users, in my opinion. Today, you will learn how to take an ordinary photo and turn it into an artistic sketch on a rough canvas.
Step 2: Duplicate the layer by pressing Ctrl+J. Now apply the desaturate on the duplicated layer. Go to Image> Adjustments> Desaturate or press Ctrl+Shift+U.
Now return to your 'sketch lines' layer and use your paintbrush tool to brush roughly lines over the lines of your photo. The trick here is to be fairly rough, and keep brushing roughly over the same areas to build up your image. If some of your lines mess up then don't delete them! This all helps build up the sketchy effect that we're trying to create. Also, try to pay attention to the textures of what you're drawing over. For instance, you can make your sketch lines for hair messier and more random than the detailed lines for the man's eyes. A great tip is to just hold down your mouse button whilst using the paintbrush and drag your cursor back and forth over the same lines, rather than keep clicking each time you need to make a new line. The images below show some stages of this process.

Sepia is a red-brown ink derived from the species Sepia officinalis, a cuttlefish. It was very popular with artists in the nineteenth century. The sepia tone employed in black and white photography is the result of converting the metallic silver in a photograph to a sulphide. It not only made the photo more attractive and fashionable, but it also elongated the image's permanence. Today, sepia toning is a term for any monochromatic photo with a brownish tint to make it look old fashioned.
