Create a new layer. Go to the channels panel and create a new channel (it should be called alpha). You want to take a white brush and color the approximate area of the person of this alpha channel. Gaussian blur the channel to a fairly decent amount. Go to Filter> Pixelate> Color Halftone (you should have the effect below). Set it to default and set the pixels to anything from 11 to 20. Select all on the alpha channel by command-a for the mac or ctrl-a for the pc. Edit>Copy the channel to a new layer.
Create this very cool retro effect that can be used on groovy templates or just on oldskool layouts. Stars are the new wave! This effect was used in the admin-signatures of v8 of the forums...
This is the perfect tutorial if you want that 60'-effect on your photo's with this great retro-gradient. You can use any groovy color you want for this effect.
i love vintage and retro effects so i definitely love this one. thanks for the tutorial. I was wondering though if you knew what effect they used to create the colors of the original photo you used. 'coz i've been looking for a tutorial for that.
I'm calling this effect the 'IceCream Retro Effect' because it reminds me of an icecream commercial I once watched, the colors also suit icecream in my opinion

Today,??I was browsing around some web templates and came upon quite an interesting concept, which gave me the idea for this web design Photoshop tutorial.?? Basically, it's quite a simple technique to use with a pen tool, but it does create some really sweet results.?? Get ready in this web design tutorial??to create a 3D Retro Strip in??a series of??simple steps.

Making retro dots with photoshop takes a long time, getting the marquee tool and cutting away and adding bits... Well, now you will learn how to do it automatically with the actions tool!
Our first step is to create the foundation of the strip, which is the first layer before it bends to 3D. Following my outline and using the preferences listed below for the Pen Tool, create your own outline:
Now we want to give our tshirt design a slightly faded, worn look to fit with the retro, rock concept. Create a new top layer called 'texture' and create a selection around your tshirt design using your lasso tool. Then go to filter>render>clouds. Then go to filter>sharpen>sharpen more. Apply the sharpen more filter 5 times.
Make five copies of the last made layer and apply for each copy the Free Transform option and the Convert Point Tool, placing the copied arrows as it is presented next picture. The copies have these colors: red - #FD2B06, dark-red - #981819, green one - #ACE208, yellow - #FEEC00 and blue - light - #71CFD7
This completes the create of a very nice retro splash display, here is how my final rendition ended up after adding a little tag line, and an image of the retro icon ... pac-man. :)
Why do so many of us like watching horror films? Perhaps due to the dose of adrenalin we get in the peace of our homes or movie theaters when watching things like "The ring" - one of the most eminent recent trailers of the genre. I bet the thing you remembered the best were the TV screen shots, with the girl climbing out of it. This horror-inspiring creature came as an inspiration for me to write this tutorial.
5. Create a New Layer, make a funky retro design (something quite simple, circles and lines always seem to work) and drag this layer underneath the image.
Let's take us back to the oldern times when films and photos looked like the above. It's actually kinda nice looking in my opinion. What i'll be showing you to do is gradient maps, and a few filter effects. After the hard work, the photo will turn out just like the one on the right in the above sample.
and finally we got a space picture (the instrument , is shown with the red colour) Then we'll take the girl's photo and cut out the background using the instrument .
This effect will look differently on different photos depending on shadows and lighting. Here are two other examples and how there are differences, but the outcome is still the same retro effect.
With 'Dandelion copy' active (as captured above), hold the 'Ctrl' (Mac: Command)key then click the 'Add New Layer' icon to create a new empty floating layer 'Layer 1' below it. (Captured below)
This Photoshop Tutorial will show you how to design a cool graphics effect by changing a regular photo into a retro photo mix! Great read for all 2d graphics designers.
Go back to the photo layer and go to Image>Adjustments> Levels. Basically drag the white slider to the middle and then drag the grey slider next to the white slider.
8. Now make a new layer and put it under (make sure it is under) your original image layer. Now you can use the paint bucket to make the dots any color you want. To see your final image just press Ctrl+D, and you're done! Pretty cool.
If you want to add a little depth you can go ahead and merge all the layers together (except the background layer) and add a slight inner glow with black... here's the settings I've used:
A lot of people are fond of old things. Antiquities are popular with good reason. There is even a style in webdesign - called Retro - for lovers of the past. Imitation of the old press-cuttings can come in handy for creating retro style pictures. We will tear, crumple and even scorch the edges of the newspaper in this tutorial, just to get the Retro look.
Then I went on to DeviantArt to find some nice Retro Brushes that I liked, and found some really cool ones by Eli Burford, that can be found at Deviantart. Download those and install them, then make one stroke, it should cover the whole document, and you should now have something like below:
In this tutorial, I'll show you how to create a beautiful, vibrant, Retro-Pop abstract wallpaper. You'll also learn how to add some wonderful texture to your designs and make some abstract shapes!
Happy New Year everyone! Finally I am back from the long holidays. I shall start off Year 2009 with this Retro Pop Art tutorial. It mainly focus on the usage of Pen tool and doing simple halftone effects.
This tutorial aims to show you how to create a virtual retail box with a retro edge using Adobe Photoshop. This kind of packaging has recently become even more popular due to Windows Vista and Adobe CS3, but when selling a product or eBook, these kind of images can be a very useful selling tool.
This tutorial will kind of be split into two parts, the second part starting at step 19.The first part will cover the creation of the text and then editing this text in Photoshop. The first part will require Adobe Illustrator as well as Photoshop. The second part covers adding the animation in through Photoshop, this will mean you have to have Photoshop CS3 extended version as we will be using video layers. However there is ways round this if you can find a program to convert movie files into animated gifs. Firstly a good idea when starting any project is to think up a color scheme or to find one on the internet, I tend to use this site to find color schemes so for this project I searched for 'retro'. Part of the reason why I wrote this tutorial was because gomedia have released a couple of free sample motion packs which ought to be utilized and for people who don't know how to use them then this is what the tutorial covers. For this I will be using the Hooladanders pack which can be downloaded here.
1. Start by opening a new file, size doesn't matter but I will be using 350px * 150px 2. Select the Text Tool and write Retrocloud or whatever you'll like. I'm using Nougat, 50pt and #fff600 as color
In this tutorial we will be designing a cool retro text effect, which is growing more and more popular in today's design. Today you will learn how to use the Perspective tool to create depth and how designers can use default gradients in unusual ways!
I'm sick of seeing the people mention the perspective being off. It even says on the front page that this tutorial is written for isometric view. And besides, it never said anything about being realistic, but rather to teach techniques to create a retro style game controller. So shut up and learn.
Now create a long rectangle spanning across the bottom of your canvas, using your shape tool. Make sure that this shape is above all layers EXCEPT for your paper texture layer. Also, for the color of the rectangle, use your eye dropper tool, and select the red of the woman's shirt. Once you have created your rectangle go to edit>transform>rotate and rotate it until it looks good. The idea is to cover the legs of your woman. The paper texture layer should really become prominent over the top of this bold shape, and become the focal point for your poster.
With this tutorial I am going to show you how to give a retro look to your images. I am starting with an image bought from Dreamstime for just 1$. The image is copyrighted and that's why I have watermarked it so noone downloads it from here. Also keep in mind that I am working on the full resolution image which is 6 MP while the images posted here are scaled down. Copyright Photographer: Kateryna Govorushchenko Agency: Dreamstime
Yes you're maybe probably right for that, for now I can just help with that there have and download versions of our tutorials with full screen extra quality dimensions in download tutorials page. Hope it will be more useful for you. ON :2008-05-10 07:17:19
The last thing is to make the background a bit dirty, so with a dark color, select a brush that looks a bit like smudge and draw some nice dirt on the background (not too dark).
First we will create the circle shape, to use later, so with the ellipse shape draw a circle on that stage, bring down its filling percent to 0 and give it a stroke style black 20 px as shown below.
I assume you have quite alot of photoshop knowledge, so I will not point out the obvious. This tutorial is divided into 9 (pretty big) steps, so lets kick off with number one!
Here's a few simple steps to help create a retro-style text effect. No need to duplicate and merge multiple layers, follow along and I'll show you how it's done.
In this tutorial you'll make that cool, old fashioned look, the 'retro background effect' This effect is great for many uses. Web banners, business cards, fliers, the list goes on.
I will teach you in this tutorial how to create a retro website splash for the main page of your website by using brushes, text effects, and just plain style!
Retro text like this looks great but isn't easy to create in Photoshop alone so here we use a mix of Photoshop and Illustrator, rastor and vector to create some unique text. The second part of this tutorial explains video layers, something which is relatively new to most people. The final result will be an animated image that could be used for a web header.
Next, add the Type Layer of your text and font choice. Make sure the font size is a large integer so that you can see the effect more efficiently. (I used the text 'psd' with font settings of 'Impact', '140 pt', White, then opened the 'Character Palette' and set the tracking for the characters to '140', to space them apart a bit.)
In this tutorial we will be designing a cool retro text effect, which is growing more and more popular in today???s design. Today you will learn how to use the Perspective tool to create depth and how designers can use default gradients in unusual ways!
Follow these steps in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to create a range of vector shapes and graphics that can be combined into a great looking vector collage illustration. We'll then finish off the illustration with some subtle touches of depth and detail, giving a polished graphic with hints of a retro-grunge style.
Follow these simple steps in Photoshop to create a homage to Apple, combining the retro striped Apple logo with a range of soft grungy textures to produce a detailed design with subtle touches of colour and tone.
Step 6 ??? Model Fill the background layer with white and name it Background, then drag the Left Side and Right Side layers in the new document from the document we saved earlier and place those two layers in a new group Layer ??? New ??? Group, name it Retro Model, select the group, resize and place the model with the Free Transform Tool Ctrl+T.
Handmade-looking graphics add a personal touch to a project and inspire a sense of nostalgia. Wendy Ding examines how this can be done for a web banner in Illustrator and Photoshop
11. Now, click Select > Colour Range.... have the fuzziness to 100 ( Selection = Image). Click the one of the white stripes, and click ok. Now, hit delete on your keyboard.
Now right click the pattern layer in the layers tab and choose Create Clipping Mask and then to finish set the layer style to Color Burn this will then get rid of the white from the image and darken the remaining colour, now place the grunge texture above all of your other layers so that it is applied to all the layers this will then leave you with the finished poster:
