This brief tutorial will go over how to trace and ?cut out? an object in Photoshop and create a black silhouette, a la iPod ads.

In this Adobe Photoshop tutorial, we're going to have some fun with silhouettes. By that, I mean we'll first create a basic silhouette using a technique that will give us the freedom to resize the silhouette as needed without any loss of image quality, and then we'll see how to fill the silhouette with a fun background to create interesting designs!

3. Adjust the exposure so it is more balanced and on the verge of being a silhouette. For this photo I had to slide the middle slider slightly to the left.

Start out by importing the image you want to cut the silhouette from into Photoshop. I used an image with a white background, which makes cutting very easy. Everyone has their own way of cutting something out, so I will not include that part in this tutorial. If you are unsure how to cut something out, look for a tutorial on that subject first.

If you've ever wanted to shine in the spotlight, try this tutorial. It shows you how to create a silhouette of a person taken from a normal photo, adding colorful light to it as if the light source is located behind this object - Ben Merckx

This Photoshop tutorial will teach you how to create a silhouette.

Create a kung fu fighter silhouette in this easy Photoshop CS tutorial. Learn one method for removing the background from your images while making a nice image for an avatar or small web graphic.

8. Enjoy your kung fu silhouette. A suggested use for this is your avatar. Do you think anybody is gonna mess with someone using this avatar? Forget about it...

Silhouettes are photos where your subject is dark against a bright background. We have probably all taken shots like this by mistakewhen taking a picture of a friend or relative who was standing in front of a window, or standing with the sun behind them, etc. But photos like this give us a dark subject with a bright, washed out backgroundnot exactly what we were hoping for. This happens because the digital sensor in our camera cannot accurately capture scenes with such high contrast. However, this weakness can be turned to our advantage.

4. Make a new layer and place it under the Carmen Electra layer. This is going to be the background layer. Make a gradient as in the image below, then drag from Carmen's head and down to the left corner.

Sometimes a print or online project needs an outline-type silhouette instead of an actual photo, in order to illustrate a project. By using the Threshold tool and the Gradient tool, we can make a few unique effects to complement a print of online design.

Never shoot towards the light. We've probably all heard this old photography rule, but, for now, let's treat it more as a general guideline. If you want to shoot some photos that really pop, that really jump out and grab youshoot towards the light. When silhouettes are created on purpose, they can be among the most striking and engaging of shots: Using a sunrise or sunset as the backdrop for your subject can give stunning resultsyour subject becomes a bold black figure against a canvas of bright and vivid colour. When you use a bright and cloud filled sky as your background, your subject often doesn't come out pure black, but comes across as dark and moody against a brooding sky. So lets take a look at how you can use your digital camera to create silhouette shots with impact. Here a few tips for getting better silhouette shots: You will need to get familiar with your camera's exposure compensation feature to get the most out of your silhouette shotsyour camera manual should contain simple instructions on how to use this feature. Most digital cameras have an exposure compensation range of 2 to +2 that is adjustable by increments of 1/3don't be afraid to try them all. Use + exposure compensation to make your shots brighter and - exposure compensation to make them darker. When shooting these high contrast shots, your camera's default exposure settings may not give the results that your are looking forso, shoot, then review, shoot, then review. Don't completely rely on your camera's view screen either. Taking several shots at different exposure settings will give you the best chance of getting the shot you really wantphotos often look very different when viewed at home on your computer screen. Happy shooting, and remember, don't be afraid to shoot towards the light. For more digital photography tips, visit Jeff Galbraith's web site: http://www.jeffgalbraithphotography.ca

Now it's time to clean up with the Select tool. Remove chunks of the background as much as you can. Don't worry about the details yet - that's in the next step.

Silhouette Techniques When you are getting ready to take your silhouette pictures, there are a couple things to keep in mind. These tips work for both digital and film photography. Make sure you never point the lens directly at the sun. If there is too much light, the light will fall on your object. If there is not enough light, your background will become gray. The main key to silhouette lighting is having your background lighter than your object, but this can be done in more ways then one. Many photographers focus on a certain time of day, where their subject is, what kind of weather there is, and where the sun positioned in the frame.

Silhouettes are some of the most beautifully gentle types of digital photography you can do. They can offer us a commanding presence combined with such gentleness. A digital photography silhouette can work so well to emphasise a certain subjects form very well. It can take your main focus from an uninteresting scene to one of pure interest and fascination. And this works extremely well in digital photography. Digital photography Silhouettes work best when there is one main subject (can comprise of a few subjects) that has the whole emphasis on it. What works best is the light coming from behind to block out the whole subject, not just dim the subject. But, there is more to it than just blacking out the subject from the light behind. You will find that when you go to take your digital photo silhouette shape and form become features points of your picture. Your lines and form become paramount to a successful silhouette image. The background colour can really work well to enhance your silhouette, especially bold colour that stands out nicely to enhance the blackness of your subject. Your lines will help enhance the viewer's perception of the more concentrated feeling you are creating. Bold background colour works well with a digital silhouette photo because it enhances the black and you'll find it lifts your subject because of the stark contrast it creates. Black and bold, intense colour can enhance each other. A black figure against a hot pink background or bright blue can look powerful. Your lines and shapes are enhanced because the detail of the frontal aspect of the main subject are gone. The eye is left with nothing but shapes and form to capture the essence of the image itself. We are unable to see frontal detail so naturally our eye looks at the composition and form of that subject to find information from it. To create beautiful silhouette digital photography choose a simple theme. Silhouette is all about simple and there are many things that work well. Silhouetted subjects against a sunset sky are a traditional method of creating beautiful silhouettes. Another thing you can do is black and white silhouette. Black and white silhouettes such as branches of a tree against a blue sky done in your black and white mode create a sense of drama and interest. The sprawled-out branches of the tree as a shape tend to capture our interest very quickly. Inanimate objects such as ladders, lamp posts, bridges and windmills can also make powerful silhouette digita...

I've clicked the eye icon beside the "hills" layer, to hide it for now, so we can just see the clouds.
