2. Now edit your image a bit with the Brightness/Contrast tool (Image, Adjustments, Brightness/Contrast) and play a bit with the settings, everyone got his own taste. 3. Sharpen the picture (Filter, Sharpen). You can use here the easy 'sharpen' setting, or to choose your own with 'Unsharp mask' or 'Smart Sharpen' in CS2. 4. Duplicate the image, blur it (filter, blur, gaussian blur) and change the blendmode to softlight/overlay to get some better colors. 5. Now flatten the image (Layer, Flatten Image). So now we got a background and we can start with the twirls.

5. Now you duplicate the layer (right click on the layer in the layers pallette -> Duplicate Layer) and Filter -> Distort -> Twirl. Set angle to 400 and press ok.

You can play around with this until you're happy, 999 just happened to look the best for my twirl. Play about and see what kind of effect you can come up with.

5. Then merge the layers, to do that press Ctrl+E, then go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur and set the Radius to 3 pixels. Then go to Filter>Distort>Twirl and set the Angle to -999%. And that's it you are done! This is what I came up with.

Ok, now for the last twirl. Use the same effects as you did in the first blur. Refer to the image below. Filters > Blur > Radial Blur.

12. This is the affect we are looking for. Now we are going to add color. Blue often look nice. Select the first Twirled layer. Press CTRL-U. Select Colorize Set Hue: 196, Saturation: 50.

7. Give it a gaussian blur at about 1 and your are done. A fast and easy effect, but great for a background image.

1. The first step is to open a fresh file and make a new layer.

1. Begin with a new file, 300200, with #660000 as your background color, then create a new layer in the layers palette.

2. Now create another layout above the default background layer. You can simply press CTRL+SHIFT+N.

Step 5: Go to Image> Adjustments> Curves or press Ctrl+M and set the curve like below:
