Photoshop Tutorials » Effect » Explosion

This tutorial will show you how to create a dramatic effect in PhotoShop, which can be used on text or an image. We will be using Filters and Layer Styles to create rays of light shining behind text, in an explosive fashion.

PS: I have a couple of requests - have a tutorial on 1) Slicing up graphics for a site design, and how to code it (coding may not be relevant for photoshoppers, but very relevant for designers amongst us). I've done all this, but I believe that my workflow is inefficient. Learning from a pro is better, as they say. 2) Making those awesome gradients with borders and such stuff - what you have on PSDtuts and FSw.

There we have it: our Space Explosion is complete! I don't know about you, readers, but I'm exhausted. Normally, pieces like this take days or weeks to put together, and now that you know how to do it you can create some original pieces of your own. Below, you will find some links to works that inspired this tutorial and others that are for inspiration.

These images are not So good because these are web JEPG compressed image but when u make them they look perfect.

Olate is a UK software company specialising in products for other software developers. These products include iono - a PHP licensing system, Arctic - a PHP bug tracking system and UK dedicated servers.

Here is a cool little effect I just made up. I know this one is going to be popular. A movie type explosion, complete with flying sparks!

Explosion In this tutorial you'll learn how to make realistic looking explosions in Photoshop. 1.) First off all create a new Document 500 x 500 px. Set the Backgroundcolor to black. 2.) Now, choose the Lasso Tool and make a selection with irregular edges, just like I did in this tutorial. 3.) Fine. Now choose Red (255, 00, 00) as your foregroundcolor and yellow (255, 255, 00) as your backgroundcolor. Now use the Clouds-rendering filter>: Filter > Render > ?louds

Uh, I like the explosions, but I think they're poorly executed here It just looks like you're blowing off her arm and leg but it's fun and colorful, so it's cool? I feel like this idea could be done in a different, more effective way but I'm not photoshop master, so I guess I can't complain. I just wish there were something I could use beyond this stock photo.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a crazy explosion, like a mix of Magneto's ability with Peter Petrelli's power. We will use images and filters to produce this wave explosion effect. Even though it may look like a difficult tutorial, it's really not that hard.

Now insert the new layer and then pick the colour of brush as red (#FE0107) and thn Yellow (#FEFB01) and thrn White (#FFFFFF). Now make a picture like that or looking like that

2. Now duplicate the Fire layer and name it "Burst". Duplicate the fire layer again and name it "Energy". Make sure they go from top to bottom: Burst, Energy, Fire. Click the burst layer and do: Filter > Blur > Radial Blur... Blur Method: Zoom, Quality: Good, Amount: 100. Now with the Energy layer selected, do: Filter > Render > Lighting Effects... set it up as follows.

Besides you can get the impressive tongues of flame using this effect. Apply such meanings in action 3 in Hue/Saturation: Hue:30, Saturation:50, Lightness:0.

3. Now here comes the part where all the noobies fall off. This might take time. Start off by using different brushes (I used photoshop brushes only..!) and make effects. Use the grungy brushes and make sparkles coming out of the explosion. Do some more smudging, add more brushing and vola!

12. Now, we just need to black out the unneeded spots around the explosion, so take a soft black brush to the outsides, and your done!

Start off by using different brushes (I used photoshop brushes only..!) and make effects. Use the grungy brushes and make sparkles coming out of the explosion. Do some more smudging, add more brushing and vola!

Open ImageReady and select in the menu File/Import/Folder as Frames... and the program will convert all your files as frames. How you go from there is all up to you and a detailed description of how to adjust or expand the animation in Imageready is beyond the scope of this tutorial. I can tell you the results can be quite spectacular, depending on how you created your frames in Photoshop to begin with and how many frames you used.

Lets add some depth now by punching the text using Filter>Distort>Pinch... I set the amount to -50 to bring the text out. The distortion will depend on your image's aspect ration (ration between width and height).

Now create a new layer called 'watercolor' and select a set of watercolor brushes set at black, 100% opacity. Paint over your photo until it's covered:

And you are done! This tutorial took part of Fabio's Create a Powerful Mental Wave Explosion Effect as reference. Hope you like it.

7. You can color it to make the explosion look more real. What I did was I created new layer above the explosion effect and filled it with Red and changed the Layer option to Color.

The longer the text line, the more blur you will have to do.? To keep it simple type in the word Explode with caps and lower case.

To start off, look around Google or another image search website so that you can find Tiger Woods just after his backswing, so you can add the ball as it's coming off of his driver. I found this photo by Zeke Quezada of him swinging at the Buick Open.

12. You are now finished with the background, add text and an image of what ever you want and you are finished.

And that's it! Now you have one of those fancy little exploding icons you can add to your comics (if you like to make comics) or your websites (if you get some new submission of something.

Now use the eclipse shape tool and create a small round shape about 30x30px.

2. Now right click inside your shape and choose Fill, fill the shape with white, then go to Filter>Distort>Ripple and set the Amount to 999% and the Size to Large. Now should it look something like this.

Set the Layer Style for this layer to Screen. Now press Ctrl/Apple and T and then rotate and move the image so it looks like this. Make sure the start of the flame looks like it is coming out the mouth.

We start with the original, yet still quite righteous, kick to the face. Did you know that Chuck Norris once roundhouse kicked someone so hard that his foot broke the speed of light, went back in time, and killed Amelia Earhart while she was flying over the Pacific Ocean?
