6. Interlaced GIF files are loaded in a browser in a few passes (like the progressive JPEG's). In our case, however, this option enlarges the optimized file by 2 Kb, so we'd better deselect it.

2. GIF images may have very limited amount of colors (up to 256); the less colors contained in image, the smaller file we get. First, let's choose a color reduction algorithm (movie). There are 9 options in the menu; but unless you have a very specific purpose, use one of the four upper options:

Open Photoshop's Save for Web window (File>Save for Web) A or ImageReady's Optimize palette (Window>Optimize) B. Choose GIF from the Format menu, or choose a collection of GIF settings from the Preset menu. (Two PNG formats are also available-PNG-8, which is similar to GIF, and PNG-24, which can contain varying degrees of transparency. These formats are less popular than GIF and JPEG because not all Web browsers display PNGs correctly, and because PNG-24 files can be relatively large in file size.)

To export, goto File > Save for Web & Devices. Choose GIF from the DropDown menu - 128 being the best quality. And you can also preview it here as well, using the controls buttons near the bottom:

First, you need to select frame one, turn off the logo and text layers. After that, move down the wave layer vertically, until it disappears from your canvas (Select the wave layer, hit and hold down the Shift key, click on the wave layer and drag it downwards).

I don't use Photoshop or ImageReady. I use Paint Shop Pro 10 and Jasc Animation Shop to produce animated GIF's. The principles of animation are the same, I believe, no matter what software you happen to use. For that reason, I'll try to keep the discussion as generic as possible. The example that follows assumes a file size limit of 512k, but the principles described can be applied to any file size.
