I have to say, as a web designer myself, I appreciate all of your tutorials. Thanks to people like you the web design community has, and continues, to grow rapidly - and progressing technology along the way.
This tutorial was well worth the effort for a stunning digital smoke effect. But I needed a realistic smoke effect, and this only got me so far. So I tweaked PSDTUTS version and was very pleased with my results. If it wasn't for PSDTUTS I could not have done it without them. I'd say about 75% of it was their tutorial and 25% was my tweaked version.
First things first: create a new document with a background color of white. In a new layer (Ctrl + Shift +N), type the letters that you'd like to look smoky in the color you'd like the smoke to be. For generic smoke, use a light grey. Choose a bulky font, like Gill Sans Ultra Bold (what I'm using) and keep a decent amount of space between the letters for legibility's sake. Right click the text layer, and choose Rasterize Type.

3. This smoke will look a bit weird, but no worries - we'll change that shortly. Using the smudge tool (R), blur the smoke in a same direction, from the left to right, so it looks like it's leaving the car.
Lastly to make the smoke more realistic we will change the Smoke Levels by going to Image > Adjustments > Levels. Move the right slider (white triangle) to the left, and middle slider (gray triangle) to the right a bit. You need to experiment a little bit to get the desired effect. As you see below my settings for Input Levels were 0 - 0.57 - 193.
Go to Edit->Fade Wave. Set it to 50% and press OK. I know right now it does not look like smoke at all...but repeat the last steps many times and it will look very realistic. You can even hit the randomize button from time to time to make it even more realistic. This is what I came up with. You result will be very different, but if you have applied the wave distortion many times than it should look really cool.
For the rest of the tutorial i will be referring to the document as though I'm just doing the smoke for the drag race effect and wail often refer to the cars but just take this as your own image. You will be able to use the effect other images.

It helps if you stick to a general shape for your Waves, so if you see one that is too drastic in the preview, click Randomize again. You can also throw in a few Distort > Twirl filters, to get a swirling type of smoke effect, which you can also fade.
To begin, select an image that you would like to apply the Smoke Overlay to. In this example, I will use the results of a previous tutorial that I made.
One of the best things in Photoshop is the Brushes Engine and all the things we can create with brushes. With so many excellent sites with Brushes like Brusheezy, Tutorial9, QBrushes, DeviantArt, and PSDTUTS we can find practically all sorts of effects and elements ready to be used in our designs. That means we can focus on ideas rather than figure out ways to recreate things. Also we have 2 very different effects with just one adjustment layer, the Invert. Once again, it's all about playing. I hope you enjoyed this quick tutorial, and let me know if you have any questions.
This tutorial was requested from a PhotoshopDesign.NET viewer 'Lex' of Playbook Muzik. Here is a short tutorial on how to create a smoke effect. Create a new blank layer above your base layer in the layers palette.

"There's no smoke without fire" - Its a very good saying, but with the abundance of flame-based tutorials for Photoshop on the internet today, it has to be asked if the reverse can be true. After all, you can add flames into any image, but the realism can be shattered if you forget to adhere to simple principles and neglect whisps of smoke coming from the fuel source. This tutorial details a very simple method to create funky realistic smoke from scratch using very basic Photoshop tools. Compared to other similar tutorials on the internet it may seem a little basic - after all, it makes no use of funky brushes, nor several filters, but the results are just as effective and much more user-definable.
Well here you will be taught how to create a relistic smoke effect with Photoshop. Before you start you should know this effect requires alot of guessing and trial and error to make it look good.
I got this idea when I was looking at some online magazine. so lets create a photoshop tutorial of this unique image that represent Fire and black smoke. The flame I have drawn looks very unique and I have used smudge tool to make them look really cool. oops I mean HOT.
Create a new layer on top, and then a layer mask for it. With the layer mask selected use filter-> Render->Clouds. To get an idea of what you want to do, use Clouds on the actual layer too, and look at that; then undo when you're done. Above are the temporary clouds on the new layer before I undo them.
Let's begin creating some stone and wood texture as samples. Open a new document: i used a 1400 x 900 pixels with 100 of resolution. You can use the size you want but the clouds filter is influenced by the document size. Now let's create our starting clouds layer as I've just explained.
He uses the lasso to remove parts of the smoke- any regular user would just paint it out of the layer with the eraser brush which has better control than a lasso. Straight up amateur.
Let's start out by creating a new file. I used a 400x300 pixels canvas set at 72dpi, and I filled my background with a black color. Now insert a product design you want add effect on, in this case a picture of a new era fitted hat. Make sure the product picture has its own layer.
In step 12, after you add the hue/saturation layer, right-click it in the Layers window and select 'Merge Down'. This will combine the 2 layers into 1. Then you duplicate this layer, add a hue/saturation layer and merge it down also, so in total you should have 2 layers. Hope that helps.
10. Let's try one with a different smoke pattern. Start with this beautiful image I found on Flickr. Here is the page it came from: original image. It is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution.
Here you can make some very cool smoke with just a simple filter effect. I havnt seen a tut like this on the internet yet so I thought I had better post one. But anyway I find it a very useful method, I use it quite a bit.
Step 7: Now press Ctrl-E to merge down the text layer and the Background. Press Ctrl-U to bring up the Hue/Saturation dialog box. Make sure you tick on the Colorize check box and use these settings:
Now we can use that layer we put on one side at the start of this tutorial. Make it visible, and put it below your smoke text layer in the layers palette. Apply a gaussian blur of 5 to it (Filter || Blur || Gaussian Blur), then select the move tool (V). Hold shift and press the down cursor once, and add a gaussian blur of 1.

In response to this I have also added another layer which I have named “Highlights? and set to normal mode. Here I have painted in lighter accents across the right side to reflect the sunlight filtering in from the right corner, also adding some more drama and contrast.
Step 1 : Open a new file by clicking on File>Open. Give a dark background color because you can not see smoke in day light much. Here we gave Black color. Create a new layer. Draw the image of the smoke with Polygonal Lasso Tool. Give a lighter color gradient to the new shape. Make sure it' s a Linear gradient. Here we have given Purple to White gradient.
