The default icon was the heart shape, but that will be visible only until you use any other custom shape.
Select the pencil tool and open the brushes window by going to window > brushes. Set the diameter to 1px and change the spacing to 200%. Click the "create new brush" button in the lower right hand corner. Name the brush something like "Dotted" so you can remember it easily in the future.
This tutorial is going to show you a way to create halftone custom adobe Photoshop shapes. These shapes can be used in many design projects like logo design, flyer design or even as a background for another design element. They are very versatile because of their vector nature which means that they can be used at any size. Here are a few examples.
8) We need a text to complete our shape, choose Text Tool (T) and click into our shape, Photoshop automatically creates a new layer for your text. We can leave the tolerance as 2.0 PhotoShop will then create a Path for the selection we had. We can hide the monitor layer to show it:
Now that we have our shapes saved as shape sets which we can access any time we need them, there's no need to continue having all those shapes taking up memory in Photoshop if we're not using them at the moment. To clear out all the shapes you created and leave only Photoshop's default shapes, click on the small right-pointing arrow in the top right corner of the Preset Manager and choose Reset Custom Shapes from the menu:
I came up with the idea for this tutorial after looking through a scrapbooking magazine recently and coming across pages and pages of simple, ready-made shapes, all packaged together neatly into different themes, that people could buy for ridiculously high prices, and I immediately thought, "Hey! You could create these shapes in Photoshop for, like, FREE!". You don't need to be into digital scrapbooking, though, to benefit from knowing how to create your own custom shapes. For one thing, creating them is just plain fun! Creating a whole bunch of them and collecting them into different sets is even more fun! You can use custom shapes as decorations in digital scrapbooking pages, but you can also use them in professional design work. Or combine a custom shape with a vector mask to create really interesting photo borders! Before we can do any of that, though, we first need to learn how to create them!
In this Photoshop Tips and Tricks tutorial, we're going to learn how to save and reuse Photoshop text as a custom shape. Let's say you've created a simple logo by arranging some text and then applying Photoshop's Warp Text command to it, as I'll do in a moment. Since you'll be using this text as a logo, chances are you'll need to use it more than once, but you don't want to have to recreate it every time you need it. Wouldn't it be great if you could just save the logo somehow and then access it whenever you want? Fortunately, there is a way to do just that, and as we'll see, it's very easy to do.

Photoshop users are able to benefit from the vast amount of high-quality resources that are freely available to the community. Brushes get a lot of attention, but custom shapes are also extremely useful in the right situations. Finding a custom shape that has already been created can save you some time and headaches in your design, and fortunately there is a very wide variety of custom shapes available.
In this Photoshop tutorial I'll show you a quick and easy way to convert your signature into a vector Photoshop Custom Shape. This technique also works nicely for converting line drawings to vector as well.
This Photoshop video tutorial will teach you how to create nifty looking 3d organic shapes using the radial gradient tool and wave. You will be learning to use the blending options in the gradient tool, wave distortions, colorizing and more.
Shape layers and the Shape tools, introduced in Photoshop 6, are Photoshop's way of simulating vector artwork. They can be a great way to simulate the crisp, clean edges of true vector art, such as that produced in Adobe Illustrator.
You can create shapes as fills by using the marquee tools, lasso or pen tools. You would create a selection and then "fill" it with color. Usually the faster way is to get comfortable with the Shapes tools (U) on the toolbar (towards the lower right). Here you can quickly create new shapes or lines in the forms of ellipse, rectangles, polygons, lines, rounded rectangle (in the latest Photoshop version) and custom shapes.
Step 2. Make a new layer, call this layer "cog". Now grab your Rectangular Marquee Tool(M) - ensure that it is the rectangular shape, not circle or column etc. Now, make some simple rectangle shapes, all on the same layer "cog". Don't go too over board, other wise your logo will look really bad, but don't be too reserved! You can go back to this step later if the result is not what you want. This is also the part that make every single attempt different and unique, so please play around with this to see what you can come up with. This is what mine looked like:

5. Fill the selection with black (Alt+Backspace). Then move selection 100px down (it will appear under the middle ruler line) and delete selection (Delete). Then deselect (D). Now you can see a pretty shape - half of the sign.
Let's learn how to give some Cool Effects to any shape. I am going to use custom shape tool and pick hands and then twist, distort to try something new in this photoshop tutorial. In this tutorial I have used stuff like Pen Tool, Shape Tool. I have used filters and Different brush strokes like spatter and Ink Outlines and other effects.
Yep here I am again giving you another tutorial. I hope this one will allow you to make your own icons so you can sell your icons to other people. Note that I do not go over everything in needs of making any icon. Also, I would not try and use photoshop shapes and sell them as icons because I'm sure there is some kind of copyright on them through Adobe. Let's get started!
First let's start out with what Photoshop vector shapes are. They aren't really vector shapes at all. In fact they are a solid fill of color with a mask or clipping path over the top of the color to make it appear as a vector shape. The mask can be edited just like a vector shape is in Illustrator or Freehand, which makes it appear as though the shape is a vector.
The next step will be to edit away the iris of the first layer using the clone tool. Select the Clone Stamp tool and choose a relatively small brush size. Then, when ready, select a small section of the eye just outside the black pupil and stroke inward a bit. Keep doing this, following the grain of the eye's retina until you achieve this result.
Custom shapes work in much the same way as custom patterns. First you make the shape using a standard empty document and using any of the vector based tools or selection tools. This can be the pen tool or any of the custom shape tools. Here's my way of doing it although there are many others.
Select the path. From edit menu select create custom shape. Name it suitably. Now take any foreground color. Create a new file or layer and draw this shape using custom shape tool.
It is a vector based shape with it's own property as a layer in the layers palette which means that you can treat it for the most part as a regular layer and add effects, change fill/opacity, etc. In the Basic Photoshop DVD training I go through several tutorials on vector / shape creation and management.

Hello everyone, This is my 1st ever tutorial for PS (Photoshop). Wish to share with you. If you are familiar with PS working tools and you may found that there is some default custom shape inside. However, sometimes the shape may not suite to your design. So, here is the way for you to create your own custom shape or modify the existed shapes. I usually do this for my logo design and trademark design as it is scalable without losing it's quality. Let's start then
This tutorial will show you step by step how to make a basic teardrop custom shape for your Custom Shapes library. You can use the skills you learn here to go on to make your own custom shapes.
You now have a shape. Right click the layer the shape is on and select "Duplicate Layer". Do this until you have 3 polygons. Arrange them however you like to make something "cool" or "techie". Most advanced designs are made using duplication of basic shapes like this one.
1. Create a new image, and on a new layer, fill in the shapes you want rounded, or use the Type tool to draw a letter. Select the layer transparency of the layer you want rounded, by holding down Ctrl and clicking on the layer.

To use it, create a new layer and hide the originals (or start a new document altogether). Select the 'Custom Shape Tool', select from the Options Bar Custom Preset Picker and with a foreground color of your choice draw the new shapes onto the newly created layer.
While working with the Plastic Wrap filter recently, I discovered an interesting way to make geometric shapes that can be integrated into backgrounds or used to create what my friend and colleague Scott Kelby calls "Euro collages."

Photoshop's Custom Shapes palette contains a number of very useful objects. You can increase the usefulness of many of them by combining two or more shapes. And you can save these shapes for future use.
Click on Custom Shape Tool , Click on the image next to the Shape: text and the menu below should come up. Scroll down and you should see your custom shape.

How would you like hundreds of free custom shapes to use in Photoshop? You don't even need to download them?they're likely already on your computer. In fact, you may have thousands of free custom shapes installed on your computer without even knowing it!
Next, choose the "Custom Shape Tool" and draw your shapes. I used the below shapes which can be found in your Custom Shapes palette. I also used the same colors as there neighboring squares.
I did the same thing I did with ENTER and WEBSITE, but on the bottom left side of the image I added "MEMBER" and under it in lower opacity and size "LOGIN". You are done with this formal splash page, you should end up with something similar to this:

This Photoshop video tutorial will teach you how to create smooth shapes to build a nice little interface in a couple of minutes. You will be learning how to manipulate the levels command, apply layer styles, marquee and more...
This Tutorial will Teach You how to create type that follows a custom path, or fills a custom shape in Photoshop. We'll start with paths, and move our way up to filling and typing along shapes.
I have a question- what if you want a certain body of text to be fit INTO a shape. As in- instead of the shape being a window that let's you 'see through' to text, what if I want all the text to fit exactly into the shape, with none being cut-off? I am trying to design a t-shirt, and want all of our names to 'fit' into the shapes of the continents. if I use this tutorial, a lot of people's names will get cut off. so, how do i make a body of text wrap around a specific shape? thanks!!!!
Photoshop is a very powerful aid to your creativity, but only if you know the basics of interface creation. To use an analogy, its a bit like driving a car - you can be familiar with the tools at your disposal (i.e. the brake, accelerator, gear stick, etc), but unless you actually know how to use them properly, you'll be going nowhere fast. Likewise, knowing all the metal effects & shiny plastic techniques in the world won't get you very far if you miss out on the basics. In my opinion, one of the most basic skills you MUST pick up to be an effective interface designer is learning how to make complex shapes. So, without further ado, here is my tutorial on making one of the more complex shapes around - a handgun grip.
Variations: Layer effects (especially gradients) are great when used on crescent shapes, as the example to the left shows. Just have a play around and see what you can come up with - the example logo below took a mere 5 minutes to create from start to finish, and would look good on a corporate interface.
Step 2 - Create The Shape The shape that I have chosen to use is a flower shape that comes with Photoshop, however any shape can look good so its good to try different ones as well. Shape: Flower7

[10] Thanks for reading, I hope this photoshop tutorial has taught you few photoshop tricks and techniques and you can use them in your website design project. Your final image will look like this.
Often you will want to break up the hard edges of photographs of solid shapes like rectangles or photographs. By applying a mask you can do this easily.
Images are often a responsibility that is overlooked by the design team. Image quality has many meanings but here we mean that the image is crisp and that contrast, levels and colours are as good as they can be. Often the brightness or contrast means that the image is unusable. In a few cases the image cannot be improved but in most if not all there is a simple trick in Photoshop to rectify problem.
Until recently I'd been using desaturate to convert photographs to black and white in Photoshop. In fact there is a much better non-destructive method.
In creating a website branding is as important as any other discipline. One of the techniques I like to use to evoke brand messages is to use captioned images. Using a photoshop and a bit of knowledge of masks and opacity you can have a powerful brand motif in no time.
Creating a grid to base your designs on is invaluable for giving structure to the page. Here's a quick introduction to grids and how you can speed up creating them in Photoshop.
One day you might just be insane enough to want to write concentric text in Photoshop. It is quite illegible and likely to give you a headache but if you still want to do it read on.
Here's an image of my new desk taken with my camera phone. You can see that the quality is not great. Really it needs to be sharper. Thankfully photoshop allows a simple way to quickly sharpen images.
If you are using CS3 you can open JPEGs as RAW files via Adobe Bridge. Make sure you take a copy of the file you are editing first as this is a destructive method. Then right click the copy and choose Open in Camera Raw..
Then bring the opacity back to 100% by hitting 0. Then in the layers palette hold shift and select both layers. Make sure the background to both is blue showing it is selected. Then go to Edit > Auto-Blend Layers. Photoshop does some magic and you have blended your images.
We can also use layer styles to add a second stroke. Here's how to do it. Right click the layer again and choose blending options to get the layer style dialog again. This time select Outer Glow. By default the Blend Mode of Outer Glow is Screen. You need to change this to Normal. Move the Opacity up to 100%. Under Elements change the technique to Precise. Move the Spread to 100% and the Size to 20px. Remember that Photoshop draws this from the edge of the shape so if we want our second stroke to also be 10px we need to allow for the 10px of the first stroke.

In this Adobe Photoshop tutorial you will see how to make text follow a path, a path that we have created from an object. This is a smart little functionallity that you can use to "bend" text to make it look more interesting then just rotating it.
In this Adobe Photoshop tutorial I will play with shapes, and merge them together into one button or other web graphic which you can easliy apply styles, gradient etc to.

Designing a graphic interface for your website usually involves creating a lot of unusual shapes -- something Photoshop does not come ready-made to do per se. Vector graphics programs (ie: Illustrator) are far more versatile for shape creation, but there are many ways of using the built in features of Photoshop to get what you want.
A) In the Layers window, hold down Ctrl, and click on the layer you want the shadow applied to. In this case, it's the text object phong. This will load the layer transparency.
1 Create a new image, and on a new layer, fill in the shapes you want rounded, or use the Type tool to draw a letter. Select the layer transparency of the layer you want rounded, by holding down Ctrl and clicking on the layer.
Next, make a fractal design with the Pen Tool, similar to the one shown. You can really be creative with the type of shape you make. Now make your foreground color white (#FFFFFF) by pressing X. Then, click the Paths tab.

Custom Shapes And Layer Styles If you are a regular user of custom shapes in Photoshop, here are a few tips on using them when combined with layer styles. The benefits of using custom shapes for smaller work are the ability to scale losslessly and to experiment with color and effects by way of saved layer styles. Getting Artwork From Illustrator Into Photoshop To paste a path from Illustrator make sure the AICB option (Preserve Paths) is switched on in Illustrator (File Handling and Clipboard Preferences). This will allow you the option of pasting the path as a shape layer. Saving New Shapes With the Path selected, go to Edit> Define custom shape. It is then added to your library. Getting New Shapes Use the great Adobe Exchange Studio to find great new shapes. Working With Layer Styles When adding some depth to a custom shape, consider experimenting with building up layer styles one by one. Often taking an existing layer style from the Styles palette and adapting certain settings, you can get a feel of how the layer styles interact with each other. Using The Pathfinder To work with the Pathfinder tool in custom shapes, make sure the tool selected is the custom shape tool. You will not be able to paste the path otherwise. Once pasted it works in the same fashion as it does in Illustrator with the ability to save the combined/subtracted etc. shape as a new custom shape. You can use the direct selection tool to move a point or the whole path if you need to fine tune any effect. Blending Effects Using a layer mask with a custom shape is a powerful way of isolating an effect or area. However the layer style automatically will follow the new outlines of the custom shape if a mask is applied. In the Blending palette, clicking the option 'Layer Mask hides effects" ensures you can do masking without influencing the layer effect. Applying Effects To Multiple Layers. Simply click on the word effects in the layer palette and drag it on top of any layer you wish to apply the current style to. If you have multiple effects applied to a shape but want to apply just a single style such as "Inner Glow" to another shape, simple click on that effect in the layer palette and drag in the same fashion. For multiple layers, it is best to link the layers, control click to "copy layer style" and then choose "paste layer style to linked." Styles Palette & Variations...

First of all, do remember that you can use any HTML element for your microformat class names; not just span and div. It can be clear in examples to stick to generic mark-up, but anything is allowed (this is why the microformat specs themselves use span and div).
