Open up a new document with any type on background you want and put in your text (preferably in white, you can change the color later) Now go to Filters>Blur>Guassian Blur and enter 5 for the value, click OK. Then duplicate the layer you just blurred twice. You should now have 3 blurred layers below your original text layer that should create glowing effect as illustrated above. Now that you have your text, you can now right click on the text layer and select, "Blending Options...". Now click on "Inner Shadow". Select and merge the duplicate layers. Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply layer style with the settings shown. 4. Now on the text copy go to the blending options and use these settings. I selected white for the outer glow. 11. Follow the next link to download a set of splatter brushes Free Photoshop Brushes >> Splatter brushes - Dirty Brushes - Messy brushes. Create a new layer, set the foreground color to black and use the brushes you have just downloaded to make a grunge effect for the footer's columns. Set the blend mode for this layer to Overlay. You can do the same thing for the menu background. In this tutorial, we will create this effect using very basic Photoshop tools and layering effects. This tutorial is simple enough for a beginner to understand, but I should warn you that in this tutorial there ends up being over 60 active text layers, which will require a heavy use of your computer???s memory. Let???s jump into this tutorial and layer some glowing text. I've had a look at the tutorial again to see if I made a mistake as some visitors had some problems with the tutorial. And yes I forgot to mention that you need to set the "Set the anti-aliasing method" to Smooth before you type the text. Smooth makes the text slimmer than the other options. I also added a few screenshots and made some small changed. I hope it helps. If not please let me know. After creating the white to transparent gradient, (make sure that gradient layer is only selected)holding down ctrl key click on the thumbnail of the first text layer. (For ex : http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MDxhVbQjmxE/SWjXyo_p26I/AAAAAAAAAUg/PvyVuL3cfqc/s1600-h/difflayerstext.jpg you can see layer window. In this image you have 'l' as first layer. You can see a thumbnail that denotes T. You have to ctrl click the thumbnail of the layer, not the layer itself). You can now see the text is selected. Now press Ctrl+C to copy and then Ctrl+V to paste. A new layer will be created. What actually happens is that, you have the gradient layer selected and copying and pasting the shape of text, so you get a text with gradient effect. If you want to view the gradient text you have to hide the original text. No it doesn't have anything to do with copy layer style. I hope this helps. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.
Step 1: Create a new document 300 x 200 pixels. Select the text tool and type your text in black color. I use 'Cooper Std' font and font size 80 pt. This is how it should look about now..
