1. Create a new 500x500 pixel document with a resolution of 100 and name it Rock. Now press D and then apply a clouds filter. (All preview images in this tutorial were shrunk from 500x500 to 165x165 pixels).

Colin Smith is a best-selling author, trainer, and award-winning new-media designer who has caused a stir in the design community with his stunning photorealistic illustrations composed entirely in Photoshop. He is founder of the world's most popular Photoshop resource site, PhotoshopCAFE.com, which boasts more than two million visitors.

In this tutorial we will be creating a rock texture. This can be used for many things including stone walkways, grave stones, and even textures for 3d programs. It's a fairly easy effect to master and it produces very cool results. Let's get started.

Create a new photoshop document with of the size you prefer. I've chosen 1024*768. Add clouds to this default background layer by selecting render clouds from filters menu.

Filter>Render>Lighting effects.

2. Select light gray for foreground and dark gray (near to black) for background.

4) Go to FILTER > RENDER > DIFFERENCE CLOUDS.
