Create A Sepia Tone Effect In Photoshop I had no idea that my research into the definition and origins of Sepia would bring me face to face with a cephalopod. Yes, the word Sepia is Greek for cuttlefish (relatives of the squid), and Sepia is the reddish brown pigment derived from the ink sac of this ocean creature. What Can Reddish Brown Do For You? Achieving the Sepia Tone effect is pretty simple because Photoshop CS has a Sepia Tone setting in its collection of photo filters. Don't have CS yet? There's an alternative pre-CS method for you just a few steps down. Let's Sepia Tone My Bullmastiff Friend 'True' In CS start with your color photo and choose Image> Adjustments> Desaturate. This brings us to a grayscale version without having to convert, so we can still add some color. The next step is to apply Photoshop's pre-packaged Sepia photo filter. You do this by choosing Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Photo Filter. This will bring up the New Layer dialogue box. Enter the following settings: Color: None Mode: Normal Opacity: 100% Choose OK. Now you will see the Photo Filter dialogue box. Enter the following settings: Filter: Sepia Density: 50% (or experiment) Preserve Luminosity: Selected. Choose OK and you're done. Now I'll show you a way to create a Sepia Tone effect which will give you much more control over your results. This is the workaround for those without PS CS. Convert To Grayscale & Apply A Duotone Start with your original, untouched photo. Choose Image> Mode> Grayscale. A dialogue box will appear that says "Discard color information?" The answer is yes, so click OK. Now we'll create our Sepia effect by applying a Duotone. Choose Image> Mode> Duotone. This will bring up the Duotone Options dialog box. First make sure that Type: Duotone is selected. We need to pick two different inks. Ink 1 will be EB8B23. Just click on the little color square and enter the number via the Color Picker. You must name your Inks so name this one SEPIA 1 (or whatever you wish). Repeat this for Ink 2. You may find that the Custom Color box that appears is set to Pantone. Simply click on the Picker Button on the right side and you'll get your original color picker. Enter 000000 for the black we want and SEPIA 2 for the name. Finish this step by clicking OK. ...

Now, find the photograph that you want to turn into a 4-tone image. Pick something that looks good in black and white, because we'll need to desaturate it in the next step.

Sepia is a red-brown ink derived from the species Sepia officinalis, a cuttlefish. It was very popular with artists in the nineteenth century. The sepia tone employed in black and white photography is the result of converting the metallic silver in a photograph to a sulphide. It not only made the photo more attractive and fashionable, but it also elongated the image's permanence. Today, sepia toning is a term for any monochromatic photo with a brownish tint to make it look old fashioned.

Sometimes the only thing that keeps a good portrait from being a great portrait is a little too much shine on the skin. Here's a quick and easy way to tone down those highlights.

- Lets fix the brightness and contrast. Go to Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Brightness Contrast, click ok and apply the following settings:

1. Open Color Settings dialog box (Edit > Color Settings...). Photoshop offers to select from a number of options. As a beginner, just select a preset from the Settings menu.

5. Select the first image and apply Auto Color* command: Image > Adjustments > Auto Color (movie) *Auto Color is not available in Photoshop 6 and earlier versions.

1. Open Color Settings dialog box (Edit > Color Settings...). Photoshop offers to select from a number of options. As a beginner, just select a preset from the Settings menu.

.5. Now you may notice a certain magenta slope. Select Channel: Green. Move Input Levels sliders to remove any hues from the neutral colors (sidewalk, bride's dress, etc.).

I just love the look of colorized black and white photos. I have done several of them for others and myself as well, and everyone really seems to like them. This tutorial is a bit different. We are going to add a sepia tone to a picture, and then add some color highlights. This particular project has been one of my favorites.

One of the biggest changes from CS3 to CS4 is moving from adjustment layers to the new tone and color correction workflow. Once you get the hang of the features of the new adjustments panel, you will find it's faster and more convenient than the old method.

Killer Halftone Effect In Photoshop you can create halftone effects (like the background of the type behind the word halftone in the image above) in just a few steps with the help of the Bitmap Image Mode. This effect is very popular because it confuses and mesmerizes your eyes if used with enough contrast. First create an object that you gonna use as your base for your halftone effect. Use the grayscale image mode at this stage. Try bulky typefaces or simple shapes to achieve the best effect. Now, blur your object and play with the Brightness and Contrast settings, until you have a very dense blob with reasonably big blurry edges. You may need to duplicate your blurred objects layer to have dense black in the middle parts. Now convert your image to Bitmap with Halftone Screen Method. You can specify higher resolution than your input image to achieve more detail in your final image. In the next pop-up window you will need to input some more variables for your effect. The lower the Frequency the bigger the dots will be. For the Shape choose Round. Make sure you try out the other available shapes later. You can save this bitmap as a tiff file. The nice thing about a bitmap tiff is that when you place it into other applications you will be able to change it's color. If you want to further manipulate your halftone image in Photoshop, you will need to first convert the bitmap image back to Grayscale and then to RGB Mode. Your eye killer psychedelic design is ready. Step 5: Now it's time to add a few strokes following the step in my previous tutorial Photoshop Text Outline Effects. The first outline stroke should be a nice rich maroon (R 90, G 19, B 21) and applied with the Stroke layer style.

3. Let's add our pattern. So go Filter > Sketch > Halftone Pattern. Now press Ctrl+F to repeat the process for more depth.

We have just equalized tone by creating a gradual layer mask . It seems though that the entire image lacks contrast now.

The first one is the Halftone Pattern filter. We'll start with our image, I used another from PhotoSpin (PhotoSpin #1490009), and extracting the object from the background.

[9] Make a new layer.

[1] Finding a good image like this.

Let's start 1) Create a new document. For this tutorial it is necessery to work on a very large file to have good results so I used a size of 3000*3000 pixels
