Hi Kelly, ur TUT was cool and effective. But Could u help me with generating the same effect using Alpha channels. If u knw any TUT for the same that would be of immense help coz, i read some where abt using channels and generating the Halftone effect in any image. However my memory is unable to rewind and get that stuff :)
I???m starting out with an easy tutorial; it???s almost laughable, really (not the effect but just how easy it really is). I???ve decided to abandon the classic tutorial format of writing them out and giving you high resolution interactive videos. Yes, I said interactive. Most of the way you???ll be able to point and click just as if you were sitting in front your very own copy of Photoshop. No more worrying if you???ve made a mistake and totally effing up your work. And now I give you Jemaine and Bret from Flight of the Conchords with a beautiful frosted border.

I hope this tutorial helps you to create an easy grunge border. If you have any comments or questions about the tutorial, post them on the kirupaForums or you can email me at [email protected] or MSN me at [email protected]. Thanks.
#3: The border is going to be 30 pixels bigger than the picture. My image, as you can see, is 640x480 pixels. So I am going too make a new image and add 20pixels too the original size making it 670x510
So your image is not of a car or motorbike and this style border would not suit your beautiful landscape. No problem. Follow all the steps up to Filter > Distort> Glass but instead of choosing Tiny Lens from the drop down menu select Frosted and adjust the setting until you are happy with the effect. You can also use any of the of glass filters for different styles of borders so why not try experimenting.
Each day we are bombarded with a multitude of images, so, to make some impression, an image should not look trivial or amateurish. I'm sure you've seen many sites filled with just plain square, and you've thought to yourself: how boring! Well, your site, or leaflet, or advertisement, should not look that way! Here is just one small, but very efficient, trick to add an interesting detail to your pictures, make them stand out. Literally ? stand out of the border. Here's how to do it.
Most people are probably getting tired of normal 3px borders. Spiff things up with this very simple wide screen effect border. Start by opening up your signature that you are going to add this effect to.
Learn how to Enhance many aspects of your photography such as saturation, contrast, sharpening techniques and finish of the final presentation with an extremely slick border.
Step 1. Open your image, and duplicate your background layer. Choose your background layer and fill it with whatever color you want for your border. Mine is white.
Open up the image that you want to work on in Photoshop. Take the Rectangular Marquee Tool and make a selection inside the image where you would like to apply the ripped border effect. Here I will use the below image. Feel free to use it if you want.
1. Create a new document, with a white background, and paste an image into a new layer within the document. Now use the Rectangular Marquee tool ('Shift' + 'M') to create a rectangle inside the image. Finally, press 'Q' and the outer borders of your selection will appear red (which means you're in Quick Mask Mode).
You can repeat step # 3 a couple more times to add a little more detail to the border such as I have done in my final result. This concludes the Grunge Border tutorial. Here's what I finished with after adding some text, and a game render:
1. Load Photoshop and open your image. Press 'Shift', 'Ctrl' and 'J' to move your image to its own layer. Now use the Rectangular Marquee tool ('Shift' + 'M') to create a rectangle inside the image. Finally, press 'Q' and the outer borders of your selection will appear red (which means you're in Quick Mask Mode).
Dave likes to keep things flexible as he works. Here are some editable border effects that take advantage of smart objects using Illustrator and Photoshop.
1. Load Photoshop and open your image. Select the Elliptical Marquee tool (or press 'Shift' and 'M' to switch to it on the toolbox). Draw an ellipse around the image making sure that it is a fair distance away from the borders.
7. Then go 'Select/Modify/Contract' on the top menu bar and choose 2 pixels as I have done. Then hit the 'Delete' key on your keyboard to cut out the Marquee Selection area.
This aint at all hard. A bit different from other pixel borders. but you'll learn the difference here. So first open a new image. I suggest not using a white background, but just for the first part. Open a new image, get the selection tool, and make a rectangle... or square...

In this Adobe Photoshop tutorial, we're going to look at a great way to create unique and interesting photo borders by using other photos as displacement maps! Previously, we looked at how to create photo borders with masks and filters, which is an easy way to come up with interesting results simply by applying some of Photoshop's built-in filters to a layer mask. The downside to using that method though is that you're using the same filters every other Photoshop user has access to, which means you run the risk of creating the exact same border effects everyone else is creating. That may or may not be an issue for you, but the method we're going to look at here completely avoids that problem because it uses your own photos to create the effect, and since presumably you're the one who took your photos, you can use them to create photo borders that are as unique as you are!
In this Photoshop tutorial, we're going to learn how easy it is to create fun and interesting photo borders using nothing more than a simple layer mask and your choice of Photoshop filter. I say "your choice" because there's no shortage of filters to choose from in Photoshop and many of them are great for creating unique photo borders. We'll look at a few examples of ones that work really well, but you'll definitely want to experiment on your own with the various filters to see what sort of photo border effects you can come up with!
@Tautchia: Aww thank you you so much for the great compliment, I truly appreciate it! And that is so neat that you and your daughter are learning Photoshop together. You two keep up the good work!
The picture tutorial for borders was just an introduction for people who are fairly new with photoshop. This tutorial was randomly made with no practice to show you the power of the technique. You can just make some random gradients and end up with a rather fresh and interesting looking result. The layout is in mini-form, but it can easily be resized.
Alright, since i hear a lot of people asking me about how i make those smooth nice looking techy-ish borders on my work. Well i would like to pass on my skill on to you people by doing a tutorial on it! :D
6. Keep the selection. Create a new layer called "Gradient 2". And press "X" on your keyboard to set your foreground color to white. With the selection still there, do a similar drawing of the gradient, but this time from left to right. Make sure your gradient ends near the middle of the selection. Change "Gradient 2" to the blending mode "Soft Light". Merge the two gradient layers by selecting them both and pressing Ctrl+E (its fine if it looks slightly different when you merge them). By this point, if you have been able to keep up, then you will be fine from here.
A border of any color, style or thickness can be applied to a Adobe Photoshop CS3 object, such as an image. In this video tutorial, you will learn how to add a border in Photoshop CS3.
Want your images to have effects that'll make it stand out more and show up well on every background tones? With Photoshop, you could achieve these effects for your images by its features that work on light and dark edges. These allow you to work on bringing out the best edges of your image lighten or darken it, anyway you please to match on background tones and make it stand out more. Through highlighting edges of your photo, you also highlight its details. The method of unsharp mask and others like the difference of Gaussians increase the change in brightness close to each step. This technique's standard version adds a bright halo along the bright edge of the step and a dark halo along the dark edge. Depending on what effect you'd like for your image, there are advantages in just using one or the other. Using both may not do very much to improve your image, though. There are several advantages of using any of the effects for the edges on real images. One is that it reduces interference between steps or detail and the haloes from other, nearby steps. Another thing, the light or dark haloes make other features of the image stand out better from the background. Start doing this effect on your images using Photoshop by following several procedures: 1st step is duplicate the layer holding the image 2nd step - apply the conventional unsharp mask 3rd step - set the layer blending mode to Darken or Lighten. However, you must understand that this only works for 8 bit per channel images those that can be put into layers but it could function also on 16 bit per channel pictures with Optipix plug-in that allows direct selection of dark or light edges. If you are not sure about which edge halo to use, there are general rules regarding such: 1. On light background tones, light edges don't show up well and vice versa on dark ones. 2. The halo should lie on the background, not on the foreground. This technique helps the feature stand out without having to change its brightness values. Sometimes the following rules are in conflict. It is necessary, then, to try several combinations to decide which is best. You can try both edges, light edges only, dark edges only. You can experiment since different regions of your image may call for different answers. As you experiment for the best results, you'll come to know that using unsharp mask filter may drive you to add too much additional local contrast. Understand that though adding some local contrast can make a bland ...
