Want to convert a MIDI file to MP3 format? ".midi to .mp3" conversion software is unnecessary! You can do it yourself using only Audacity.

Edit Steps

  1. 1
Download (if you haven't already) and load Audacity
  2. 2
Select Mono Mix or Stereo Mix from the drop down box.
  3. 3
Make sure that the Input Volume (in the sidebar directly left of the drop-down box, with the little icon of the microphone) is set to a value greater than zero.
  4. 4
    Click the Record button.
  5. 5
Play your midi. You should see the audio waves form on the Audacity track.
  6. 6
Click the stop button when it is finished.
  7. 7
Click play and listen to your .mp3 to make sure everything is as you wish it.
  8. 8
Go to "File - Export as MP3/WAV/Ogg Vorbis".
  9. 9
    Enjoy your new file!

Edit Alternate Method

  1. 1
You still have to download Audacity.
  2. 2
    Open it.
  3. 3
    Go to Project> Import MIDI.
  4. 4
Go to File> Export As MP3.
  5. 5
Follow the Dialogs and wait for the file to be exported.

Edit Tips

  • This method is less expensive and simpler than purchasing midi to mp3 software.
  • For .MP3's you will need to download a file called Lame_Enc.dll and direct Audacity to it. It's free! You might even already have it on your computer with other software.
  • Many other sound-recording programs (besides Audacity) offer this capability, so if you already have one that you use, give it a try.

Edit Warnings

  • Make sure that you don't do anything illegal with your new MP3.
  • With large files, Audacity can take a long time to export, and it might seem to lock up. Be patient.
  • The second method may require some configuration
  • This method does NOT work in Audacity 1.2.6 - it won't be able to record MIDI.
