I too had the same thing happen, but I solved it. I think the problem is that a step was left out. 3 layers in total are needed for this effect. I created a 3rd layer called it "bkgrd" & moved it directly underneath the "shiny effect" layer, keeping it nested in the "Layer 1" mask. I made a rectangle that was slightly larger than the text, filled it with black and voila. The effect worked! Without the "bkgrd" layer the text disappears as the mask tweens beyond the text, rendering it invisible. Hope this helps, & btw, a shape tween is called for instead of a motion tween for the gradient rectangle.
