#5: Blaming Failures on Lack of Motivation

There is another deadly trap that we set for ourselves when it comes to changing bad behaviors and habits. This trap is one that we set for ourselves. Oftentimes it even makes us feel better to sabotage ourselves in this way. You didn’t realize that you are your biggest enemy at times? Yep that is right. I have sabotaged myself more than I care to admit. So, what is another big mistake we make when it comes to trying to change our bad habits?

Habit Mistake #5: Blaming Failures on Lack of Motivation

What happens is we often look for easy things to blame when we fail at something. We rationalize by saying, “Well, I wasn’t really all that motivated anyways, so who really cares.” The problem is that we begin to fall into a trap. We slip into a vain existence because as long as we lack motivation, goals, and aspirations we won’t be disappointed. Who wants to live disappointed all of the time anyways?

The other self sabotoge we do is we think that if we can just get syched up enough we can accomplish anything. We try to tackle goals that are way too big in a short amount of time and we think that all we need is to be “motivated enough.” That never works. You really need a healthy balance in this whole pursuit of life change.

The solution is to “chunk it down.” In other words, make the behavior easier to do. If you have been a couch potato for the last three years and want to all of a sudden run a marathon every day, you are mistaken. At the same time, giving up because you “lack motivation” is a bad reason too. Instead, start off slow. If you walked for 30 minutes 5x over the next week that is progress! Value progress not results. Results will often disappoint in the short-term. Progress should be your motivation in the short term.
