Gmail desktop notifications can alert you when you get a new email or a chat message, even if you aren't looking at Gmail.  While convenient, these notifications can be annoying.  You can disable them with a few clicks.

Edit Steps

  1. 1
    Click "Settings" in upper right
    Click "Settings" in upper right
Click settings in the upper right of Gmail. Or click the link here for a shortcut: https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#settings
  2. 2
In the "General" tab on settings, look for "Desktop Notifications".
  3. 3
Click the appropriate buttons to turn off both chat and mail notifications.
    • Chat notifications off - Will prevent desktop notifications from IM messages within Gmail or Google Talk.
    • Mail notifications off - Turns off all email notifications.

Edit Tips

  • Instead of completely turning off all Gmail notifications, you may want to just enable mail notifications for "important messages only".
  • As of January 2011, Gmail desktop notifications are currently only working for users of the Chrome browser.  Google has announced it plans to roll this out to all other browsers over time.
  • If you later change your mind it is simple to turn gmail desktop notifications on again.
