When using any software, there are 'best practices' to follow. These are things that can make your workflow more successful and fluid. Read this article for learning SketchUp's best practices.

Edit Steps

  1. 1
Save your work frequently. This really goes with everything to do with software, but is worth mentioning here. Also, if you are experimenting, you might want to save under various names at important times.
  2. 2
    Layer 0
    Layer 0
When actively modeling, be sure that Layer 0 is active. This will make sure that all primitives (the basic work) are not on different layers.
    • Primitives "means points, lines, faces, rectangles, circles, polygons and arcs including construction lines and points."[1]
  3. 3
Draw one part at a time. Complete one piece before going to the next step.
  4. 4
    Edit Component
    Edit Component
As soon as a part takes 3D shape, make it a component. This simplifies the process and can be edited later by right clicking on the component and select 'Edit Component'.
  5. 5
As soon as a component is created, move it to its own layer. Do this by right clicking on the component and Entity Info.
  6. 6
Finish the model before adding to the scene, like adding textures and the like.
