With these instructions, you can give a mediocre image a new life by using some visual and graphical slight of hand in GIMP to give it some POP!
Edit Steps
- 1Add a transparent layer on top of your image and a background layer at the bottom.
- 2Make a rectangular selection on the transparent layer about the size of the desired frame and fill it with white.
- 3Shrink the selection (Select - Shrink, about 15 pixels).
- 4Clear the content (Edit - Cut).
- 5Make a rectangular selection around the frame and use the perspective tool (Shift+P). Deform it as you like.
- 6Delete the parts of the frame which cover your subject, the result should look something like this.
- 7Erase the background of the photo (use what you like: mask, eraser, lasso, magic wand, just make sure the photo layer has an alpha channel).
- 8Add a subtle drop-shadow (Script-Fu - Shadow - Drop-Shadow) to make the frame look more realistic.
- 9Add, if needed, some shadows to parts of your subject popping out on top of the frame.
- 10For even more realism, make the paper less flat using iWarp (Filters -Distorts - iWarp):
- The result should look like:
- 11Adjust the shadows to fit the deformed image.
- 12Crop the image as needed.
- 13Leave the picture transparent, with a solid background or with a textured one, just as you like. In this example, a stone pattern from GIMP was used and the perspective of its layer was adjusted.
