Recycle your empty plastic bottles into useful miniature greenhouses and get your seedlings off to a flying start. Make a single plant greenhouse or one that will hold 4-5 plants.
Edit Steps
- 1Choose which greenhouse you would like to make. A large soda bottle is the perfect size for a single plant, while a water bottle in a 1 gallon (5 litre) size is ideal for growing multiple plants.
- 2Take your empty soda bottle and rinse it out. Remove the label and the bottle top.
- 3Place the bottle on a firm surface and use a pair of sharp scissors to puncture the bottle about 2 inches up from the bottom.
- 4Insert one blade of the scissors into the hole and cut all of the way around the bottle.
- 5Discard the bottom portion of the bottle.
- 6Take your bottle and place it over your seed starter pot or newspaper pot.
- 7Follow these instructions to make a larger greenhouse. Take a large water bottle and remove the bottle top and the label.
- 8Place the bottle on a firm surface. Measure up about 3 inches from the bottom of the bottle and use sharp scissors to puncture the side.
- 9Cut all the way around the bottle. You now have two pieces.
- 10Turn the base portion of the bottle upside down on a firm surface and use scissors to pierce five or six holes in the bottom. This is now your planting tray.
- 11Take a double thickness of newspaper and use it to line the planting tray.
- 12Fill the planting tray with compost.
- 13Take the other part of the bottle and cut four, one inch slits in the sides of the bottle, start from the bottom edge and cut upwards. This enables the bottle to fit over the planting tray.
- 14Place the bottle over the planting tray and push down so that it is secure.

- When moving your mini greenhouse, use your hand to support it from underneath.
Edit Warnings
- Be careful when using scissors to puncture the side of the bottle. If you are not holding the bottle firmly enough it could slip and you might cut yourself.
