i wanted to comment that for the most part this article is semi correct - however, if you do not need to conform to a certain groups standards then you do not need to dress like a metalhead. appreciate the music, don't do it for the fashion, and people will like you. if there is one thing i have found it is that metalheads are generally more accepting of anyone that comes out as genuine and who really loves the music, no matter style of dress, religous/political views, social skills, etc.

metal til death..

100 percent AGREE with the previous statement!!! Whoever wrote the actual article was OBSESSED with the idea of having "the look" instead of having "the attitude". I mean if someone has the look but listens to Milli Vanilli, are they partial metalheads? Probably not.

24.215.110.127 said:

Well I'm sure you have to admit this stereotypical article isn't as bad as the How to be punk and goth articles on this site. It focusses more on music. But you don't need to have a certain look to be a metal fan but it's weird because most people considered to be a true "metal head" and those metal bands look the same even though they say they have no style, they certainly have created a sense of style.

And something else I thought of, a lot of those rebellious labels say stand out, go against politics, and don't care what people say. I think you should just be yourself and agree and disagree with things instead of going against all majority. My quote is "I Rather be myself instead of trying to fit in or stand out"

Overall, ok article.

What is a true metalhead? Is that someone that fits the stereotype of what a person that listens to metal dresses acts and looks like? The look is secondary the music is what is first and foremost. Most of the people that dress like the stereotype are just in it for the look but are not really into the bands and music they rep, i know a bunch of people that wear suits and shit to shows but only listen to metal and nothing else they just feel more comfortable wearing dressy type clothing. Does that mean they arent "true metal" because all their shit doesnt have spikes on it?

68.73.203.134 said:

It doesn't really offer anything other than "Just listen to metal music"

66.24.241.53 said:

I added a few suggestions guys. True metalheads don't need the look, heck I know a guy who is a youth group church leader and is in a death metal band. I personally like the hair and a band shirt but that isn't me being "in the group" just me being me. the spike stuff is just kinda gay if you ask me. Metal is layed back anyways except when making and performing then we are frantic. if you really need to play the part for some reason buy about 4 band shirts and act normal. people will get the hint with a band shirt. you dont need to be mister "ill kick your ass" to be metal.

I think that all metalheads should dress in whatever way they want. If they want to go with the metal fashion, they should go right ahead. I, myself, wear a band t, torn jeans, chuck taylors, a wrist band and long hair. All because that's what I like.

Ehm... I've been listening to heavy metal - of course and other since i was 9 years old. Mostly old heavy metal bands , for example judas priest - favorite one of em.

Seriously it makes no difference how u dress. It's what is inside you. Though often people who are fans of heavy metal tend to like the way the guys on stage dresses so obviously often they dress like em too. Nothings wrong with that

Well, I hate to break it to you, but Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold (A7X) and Slipknot are actually metal bands; Trivium and A7X are considered metalcore (other good examples are All That Remains, Atreyu, Bullet For My Valentine and ShadowsFall) and Slipknot is Nu-Metal (I think...).

for me personally, metal is not just music, its a life style based around not just music, but social ideology as well, as for the "dressing metal" i think its a positive way to identify ourselves and keep the long-held tradition of the heavy metal culture, as well as to advertise the music. when people within the metal community criticise the dreess style as beeing unessassry, i honestly take offence because its always been a vital part of the culture and a way to identify yourself as a metalhead through the years. i like the spikes, as long as theyre not used excessivly they are a good way to show homage for bands like slayer, judas priest, ect. the whole "we should stop dressing metal" attitude is making us lose an important part of our culture, of course i strongly recommend u dont dress like a metalhead unless you're trully devoted to the music, that part i do agree with, but i have never meet a person who has long hair, a slayer shirt, and for instance a jacket with a bunch of metal band patches on it to be simply "in it for the fashion" and thats one thing i'm very proud of, because popular music does not have that kind of loyalty. \m/ METAL SHALL PREVALE!\m/

about the hair U DONT HAVE 2 HAVE LONG HAIR ....Baldness, very short hair, or shaving receding hair used to not be accepted by fans of heavy metal, but these days it's perfectly acceptable, thanks to lots of famous metal musicians sporting the look, like singers Dane Dincler of Brain Bucket, Daniel Heiman of Lost Horizon, Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Udo Dirkschneider of Accept, Phil Anselmo of Pantera, Tim Owens of Beyond Fear, Björn Strid of Soilwork, Jens Kidman of Meshuggah, Frank Mullen of Suffocation, Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage, Ryan Clark of Demon Hunter and guitarists Scott Ian of Anthrax, Muhammed Suicmez of Necrophagist and Kerry King of Slayer. It should be noted that many of the shaved heads of these musicians came about because they began to bald (in the case of Kerry king and Rob hallford) AN Semi-long,bushy hair that can be worn below,or a few inches above the shoulders is among the favorite hairstyles of fans and bands of the following metal genres:Nu Metal(Usually fans of nu metal bands that either include:heavy,or soft gothic themes;or industrial themes.),Industrial Metal, and usually Metalcore.(This hairstyle can be worn with,or without black hair dye.) SO WHO WORTE THIS IS NOT A METAHEAD AT ALL IS THEY SAY U HAVE 2 HAVE LONG HAIR WHAT A BITCH

Hey man, this is a great article and it helped a lot! I used to be so afraid of telling my friends that I got into metal in a very 'weird' way, because most of my friends view people who like metal as your stereotypical metalhead. I don't even dress like the typical metalhead; I pretty much just wear whatever jeans and shirt.

I love fantasy, classical music, anything to do with imagination, art, and emotions. I thought metal would never have this because of the majority of metal bands these days having the stereotypes that people often talk about. Until one day, I got introduced to Nightwish. I was blown away! After listening to them, my musical territory expanded to Within Temptation, Epica, Lacuna Coil, Kamelot, Vainglory, etc.

I pretty much lie around the power and symphonic genre (I got tired of goth, especially female-fronted ones), but I'll continue to explore other genres and see if they click.

Oh, and Trivium is a thrash metal band. They have some metalcore to them but they consider themselves thrash metal. Evanescence isn't metal. I don't who said that or why, but they're wrong. Slipknot are wannabe metal. The only good song they have that sounds like metal is The Heretic Anthem.

People are so dismissive because it gets confused with actual metal. It is a bastard genre whose only similarity to metal is that it has "metal" in the genre name and that the guitars are typically distorted. It is talentless.

Greetings from a resident metalhead: Metal is a term that is thrown around very loosely. I actually prefer it not to be used a lot because it starts to loose its meaning. Back in the day, it was only heavy metal. The combination of the two words strike a chill within the spine to say the least. The way I perceive it: metal is used to describe any on of the newer styles of music/noise that has elements of heavy metal. Heavy metal is used to describe the older style of edgy music with a thick sound. To me, heavy metal just takes the rebellious side of rock n' roll and the gloom of blues and fuses it together with the energy of punk. And another thing I noticed, the majority of better musicians always seem to have long hair. Coincidence or Samsonite powers? There needs to be a research study done on it. I've always said though, that growing your hair long is a sign of dedication towards heavy metal. I've known a lot of people who wanted to grow their long but get incredibly frustrated at the upkeep and annoyance of the middle stage. I say, just pull through, and you'll have your symbol of dedication. I just got past that middle stage for the 2nd time. There's no way in hell I'm having short hair again. Also, long hair also symbolizes the rebellion of societal norms. But as far as the newer bands, there's not much that I like at all. So far, the only newer bands I like are Warbringer, Fueled by Fire, Meltdown, and War Within. The late 90's and 2000's has been a musical decline.

i really love heavy, thrash, death, black metal and hard rock. but just because i listen to this kind of music that doesn't make a 100% metalhead though. i will love to be one but it doesn't make me feel like a metalhead but more than a fan. but i not going to stop listening to metal just because i'm not becoming a real metalhead. i'm going to continue to be myself and thats all.

I agree with people saying to wear whatever you want. I mean, if I want to wear my band-patch covered jean-vest, that does make me more metal? Or if I wear a suit am I less metal? All that matters is to feel the music and go with it, make it a part of you. Also, I don't think that looking "too metal" is making you one of the infamous posers as long as you know something about your fav band(s). Also to the guy that says 2000s and 90s bands are kind of shitty, I agree but a good band to be included in your great 2000s band list would be Black Label Society. I honestly couldn't believe they were formed in 99 O.O they sound like the 80s.

it fine saying there is no dress code for metal, but generally speaking i think most metallers would wear, say, a sodom t-shirt, not a jonas brothers, if sodom is their musical taste. thus, some kind of dress code exists. im not a big fan of the black metal look, i stick with long hair, ripped jeans, metal shirt, spiked belt and maiden hoody or denim jacket if its cold.

The only thing I disagree with is the whole deathcore and numetal stuff. You cant be a metal head if you listen to that shit! You should also change dying fetus to brutal death metal. Carcass should be in Melodic death because (if im not mistaken) they released alot more melodic death stuff than grind. Also, I would consider anyone who only listens to all of that 80's metal a fag, because face it... that stuff is not heavy! Iron maiden is fucking soft rock compared to Necrophagist, Vital remains, and Hate Eternal!

I do not want to comment on what belongs to what genre or anything, because that can be a huge debate. But one thing that really shocked me was that there was no mention of Manowar at all!!!!!! I mean what the fuck is that about? How can you overlook such an important band? Oh and another thing. A non-metalhead friend of mine gave me this link. He got interested in it because of all the positive input he got from me about metalheads. I am not blowing my own horn here, but I want to solidify what you guys said. By being the best metalheads we can and respecting the music, we can get people to if not to love metal, but to respect it. And shame on every single person who dissed old school because if you have no past, you can have no future. Those bands paved the way for all the bands you guys are now glorifying. RESPECT PEOPLE. That's what metal is all about. How can you expect others to respect us if we do not respect our own heritage and culture? Focus on the soul and spirit not the other superficial bullshit!!!!!

metalcore and deathcore are not part of the metal genre but more of the hardcore which originates from heavier slower styles of punk, and is not well accepted due to its materialistic ideals and abuse of breakdowns, not only that but the style of most deathcore artists differs much from that of true metalheads, some people consider the style to be a "scene" trend started simply to retain a variety and so as to consume other genres and styles to incorporate their own little twists and class into them, thus making them "br00tal", original or unique simply to impress the masses, and thus sell more albums or gain more fame, which is not part of the metal ideal, which is simply to enjoy the music, not care who accepts you or not and always revel in in the glory of epic feats such as battle, crazy awesome riff, beat, roar and other and the idea of headbanging and moshing with trolls and elves in a forest tavern in a distant land.

the long hair is the metal look with bracelets and shit and boots with band tees and what have you, although it isnt essential it provides a better understanding of who you are talking to because most peoples personality relfects off their clothing and also has to do with their music as that reflects off personality aswell, if you dress like a scene kid but love true metal not core junk, true metalhead will have a hard time confronting you about their music because the style differences play a bigger part then you all think, cause we dont dress like this to look pretty where as scene is all about being pretty and popular. dont let people tell you dressing like a metalhead or aving the classic metal look is overrated or comforming because having long hair to windmill with while all your non conforming be yourself buddies are standing around or hardcore dancing not enjoying themselves nearly as much as you.

I also agree with a lot of things in this article. I myself have been raised up with Metal music. I think its ridiculous when people have shirts of Slipknot, and Metallica and say "oh i am Metal now!".No, just because u know the very well known metal bands doesn't make you metal. Metallica has gone Mainstream(which are now posers). Sorry kids but they are now. I still have respect for them, but people thinking they need to have the "attitude" to fit in is stupid. My opinion on the clothing style is, you don't necessarily need to have long hair, i mean look at David White from Heathen. Also the word "Brootal" is overrated. I also think bands that are metal but dress in basketball jerseys, Hoodies w/caps,Caps, or have long socks (noticeable) are not metal at all! So in a sense you kinda need to look the part, but not really. Don't get me wrong its about the music that counts. You can have the Ugliest looking band ever but when they play its amazing!
