Install OpenOffice.org 3 in Linux

OpenOffice.org 3 can open Microsoft Office 2007 documents and features many other improvements. Here is how to install it in Linux. This article is part of the wikiHow:OpenOffice.org project.

    Check if OpenOffice.org is already installed. If its an older version, then uninstall it if you want to replace it.

    Check if OpenOffice.org 3 is in your repositories, if it is, simply install it that way.

    Download the archive for your distro at OpenOffice.org, deb for Debian or Ubuntu, rpm for Fedora, OpenSuse or Mandriva.

    Since it is an archive, you need to extract it.

    Go into the newly extracted folder with all the packages, debs for Debian or Ubuntu, rpms for Fedora, OpenSuse or Mandriva.

    Become root and install all the packages. In Debian or Ubuntu sudo dpkg -i *.deb, in OpenSuse sudo zypper install *.rpm, in Fedora sudo yum localinstall *.rpm or in Mandriva sudo urpmi *.rpm and type in your password.

    Add a shortcut on your desktop or in your menu to /opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice.

Edit Warnings

  • OpenOffice.org 3.0 is big and downloading it can take a long time especially over a slow connection.
  • If you can't find a package for your distribution you can compile it but this will take a long time.
