New research into the field of sedentary science reveals that sitting all day in an office chair not only is bad for your health but will reduce an employee's life span.[citation needed] Companies are searching for innovative ways to keep employees healthy by allowing them to move while they work.

    Understand the difference between exercise and movement. Most people equate exercise with sweating, strain and loss of breath. Exercise comes in many forms and although we need aerobic, strenuous exercise on occasion the most important is moderate exercise such as walking. Moderate exercise involves continual movement, not sweating or straining. Some step one is to re-educate yourself to your body's need for movement during the day.

    Determine whether your occupation allows you enough movement during the day to stay healthy. Your workout at work should at a minimum allow you to take 10,000 steps a day. This is the minimum set by the Surgeon General for maintaining health.[citation needed] Most Americans walk less than 5,000 steps per day.[citation needed]

    Purchase a treadmill desk. There are many models available ranging in price from $479 to $6,500.

    Get a peddling mechanism to put under your desk so you can pedal as you work. Look for one that is quiet and low enough that your knees don't hit the bottom of the desk.

  • Remember, once you start walking as your workout at work only add 15 minutes more walking per day than you normally achieve, otherwise you will end up with sore muscles from the start.
  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Keep your speed low (between 1-2 mph) and the emergency shut down key in easy reach.
  • Stay hydrated.
