Sleep with Lots of Noise

Neighbors having a party? Bad thunderstorm? Or does your dad watch the TV too loud at night? Need sleep because of one of these reasons? Read this!

Edit Steps

  1. 1
Before you go to bed, take a hot bubble bath or have a warm drink to soothe you and make it easier for you to fall to sleep

  2. 2
Shut the window if you normally have it open, as closing it blocks out some of the noise.

  3. 3
Get into bed and lie in silence, and see how loud the noise sounds. If it is too loud, try putting on low music to block out the outside noise.

  4. 4
Close your eyes and think of something else. Try to imagine the sound not there. Just try to forget about the sound. Maybe imagine a something happening, or write a story in your head. Try to picture a scene of a movie or something, just do something to distract yourself.

  5. 5
Count. If you're alone, count aloud to high numbers. Think more about the counting than the noise that's keeping you awake. Count very, very high, until you get very, very, very bored and sleepy.

  6. 6
If it is still too loud, and it is a neighbor's party, go and ask them if they would mind turning down their music/being quieter. Be nice and tell them that you understand they are having a party, but you would really appreciate some noise relief as you need your sleep.

  7. 7
If the noise is something else, such as a thunderstorm or other natural noises, try earplugs.

  8. 8
Think about sleeping in another room. If your living room is any quieter and the noise is low enough in there to sleep, move your quilt and pillows to the living room and sleep on the sofa.

  9. 9
Fight noise with noise. Find a boom-box, or the equivalent, and set it up in your room, only tune it to a non-station. In other words, tune it to a channel that is only static, and turn it up as loud as possible. It should drown out all the other noise, but it will be so random that you will still be able to get some sleep. A fan will achieve the same purpose. You can also purchase a white noise generator that will produce sounds such as that of rain, a whitewater stream, or surf. You can even find free white noise files online.

  10. 10
Lie in bed and get as comfortable as possible. Make sure your feet are warm, and that you have enough pillows to support your head. Then, lie there and think about things. Eventually, you will fall asleep, even if it takes a long time. It often seems to help if you think about staying awake!

Edit Tips

  • Try to meld the sound in your head into one big noise blob, so to speak. Make the unwanted noise white noise mentally.
  • Close your eyes
  • Ahh, sweet ear plugs.
    Ahh, sweet ear plugs.
Call the police, if necessary. Disturbing the peace is not only rude, but it can also get someone in trouble. The police are there to help, and if your neighbors refuse to turn their music down or quiet their barking dog, go ahead and let your fingers do the talking.
  • Having warm and comfortable sleeping conditions will help.
  • Try sipping warm milk before you try to get to sleep.
  • Try taking a tablespoon of honey with your evening meal.
  • Turn on a fan in your room; the steady sound will drown out everything else.
  • Try a white noise machine. They are not 100% sound proof but they block noise pretty well.
  • Sleeping pills are another idea. They will force you to fall asleep, regardless of any noise. Be very careful how you use them. Do not use them with alcohol, and use them in moderation. Most people do not become addicted to sleeping pills, but some brands are more addictive than others.
  • Fix yourself a nice big double bowl of oatmeal and eat it. This will have the effect of making you drowsy and able to sleep.
  • don't get nervous about the time that is taking to sleep. Is very common to dream that you can't sleep, when you are actually sleeping. Don't get angry; get in love with the noise.
  • If all else fails, consider adding soundproofing to your existing walls and ceilings.

Edit Warnings

  • DON'T turn on your music so loud that your neighbors will call the police. Remember, not all of your neighbors are making the noise--there are other people out there who are just as bothered as you. Don't add to the chaos.
