Tell if Something Glows in the Dark

It's not particularly useful to know if something glows in the dark, but it's fun (and easy).

Edit Steps

  1. 1
Find a UV light. These are sometimes included in children's "Spy Kits."
  2. 2
Find whatever you suspect glows in the dark.
  3. 3
Simply shine the UV light wherever there is a greenish-white color.

Edit Tips

  • It tends to be more fun in the dark, obviously.
  • If you don't have a UV light at your disposal, another quick way to make this determination is to use a camera flash. Hold the item directly up to the flash of a digital camera (or film camera, if you don't mind wasting a picture), and press the button as though you're taking a flash picture. If the item glows in the dark, the bright camera flash will "charge" it instantly, causing an intense glow. Take the item into a dark area like a closet or windowless bathroom if you're still not sure.

Edit Warnings

  • Some strong UV light can be harmful to your health. Be careful.

Edit Things You'll Need

  • A UV light
  • Whatever you want to check
