This guide will not help you become an expert in psychology or make a psychology guru who can tell what people are thinking by a blink or move of the finger. This article will give you a reading list.

Edit Steps

  1. 1
Read Freud. Being the founder of the psychoanalytical movement and the first major figure in psychology and psychiatry, it is only right we begin with him.
  2. 2
Read Jung. Jung was a student and colleague of Freud who broke away to form his own theory; his works aspects of the masculine and aspects of the feminine are interesting and more laid back.
  3. 3
Read Adler. Another colleague of Freud who also broke away to form his own theory, the theory of individual psychology being one. The best place to start is with the neurotic character.
  4. 4
Study B.F. Skinner. B.F.Skinner was a major figure in behaviourism and his work about behaviourism is a good place to learn about behaviourism.
  5. 5
Study names like Carl Rogers, Abraham Maslow, and Albert Bandura.
  6. 6
Learn about the different types of psychology.
    • Humanist psychology was a reaction to behaviourism and psychoanalysis and formed by Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers, and Clark Moustakas, I suggest you read something by one of these three.
    • Existential psychology developed along with humanism and was pioneered by Rollo May; Love and Will and The Courage to Create.
    • Cognitive psychology is a discipline concerned with internal mental processes such as learning, thinking and feeling, wilhelm Wundt father of experimental psychology and the founders of the Gestalt psychology;Max Wertheimer,Kurt Koffka and Wolfgang Köhler.

Edit Tips

  • BOOK LIST:
  • This is just the beginning, as you read you'll find references to other books they have written and from there to other psychologist, by doing so you will continue on your long journey.
  • Don't rush go at your own pace and absorb the information otherwise you won't truly remember or understand.
  • Make sure you are organized; read some Freud, then Jung and work methodically.

Edit Warnings

  • Don't put your newly found knowledge out for everyone to see, some people may not understand psychology and it can blow up in your face, better to talk psychology with people who will appreciate it.
  • Some theories like those of Freud are quite disturbing like the psychosexual development stages, you may read things you don't like.
