- 1Evaluate why you want to be "well read". If you want to appear smart, then you should take a different path than someone who just wants to know a lot, or someone who just wants to read everything in the world.
- If you just want to look smart then you have the basics: Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, the Communist Manifesto, The Bible, The Vedas, The Koran, etc. You get the picture.
- If you want to know a lot then you should read non-fiction, any non-fiction.
- If you just want an awesome book, you don't have to wander farther than your local library or Barnes and Noble Bookseller. Dante's Inferno, Eragon, Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Briar Rose, Sherlock Holmes, the works of O. Henry, The Chronicles of Narnia, City of Bones, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Cheese Monkeys, My Heartbeat, etc.
- 2Read anything and everything in sight. Billboards, nutrition facts, labels, pamphlets at the doctors office, magazines, books, posters, just read. You will accumulate a vast stockpile of wonderful information nuggets.

- Don't be afraid to display your reading materials for the world to see. Books are good conversation starters, and you get to show off your new knowledge.
- Don't be afraid to read children's books
- Reading something to appear smart is not the best idea, you should read for fun.
- If you want to have fun reading, read books on your reading level (books you actually understand), but at the same time if you want to improve your skills you can always try to read and understand a harder book.
- If you hate reading and always will, yet still want to look like you are well read, your best bet is Wikipedia, Google, and Sparknotes, you can read book summaries without ever reading an actual book.
