One great way to participate on wikiHow is categorize articles that haven't yet been put into their right topic areas. The Categorizer app makes it easy for you to search categories for the one that best fits the given article's topic. Here's how to use it.
Edit Steps
- 1Open the Categorizer app: http://www.wikihow.com/Special:Categorizer
- 2Look at the article title. If you don't understand what the article is about, click on one of the links below the title to learn more about the topic: "View article introduction" (which displays within the app) or "Open article in new window" (which displays in a new window). Both will give you more insight into the article contents.
- If you're still not sure about what kind of category fits this article, click "Skip" in the lower right-hand corner to get a new article without categorizing that one.
- 3Type one or more words describing the topic into the search box. As you type, or when you press "Search," a list of categories will show up underneath the search box. If one of them fits the topic, click on it.
- Refine your search terms. In this example, none of the resulting categories fit, so try to be more specific when you search. Instead of searching "water," try searching "water survival" or "outdoor safety," since sanitizing water yourself is something that is often done in outdoor or survival situations.
- 4Look at the subcategories. Is there one that fits better? If so, click on it. Once you have selected a subcategory, or if none of the subcategories are suitable, click the "Add" button.
- 5Check that the category that you've chosen shows up under the title. If you want, you can search for another category to add following the same steps above once again (each article can have up to 2 categories assigned to it).
- 6When you're satisfied with the category (or categories) that you've chosen, press the "Save" button to move on to the next article.
Edit Tips
- To remove a category after you've selected it (but before you press "Add"), click the small circle next to the category (it looks like a "no entry" sign).
