Founded in 1968, the University of Maryland Medical Center's Division of Transplantation has established a national reputation for innovation and technical excellence. It is a comprehensive center with transplantation expertise in kidney, pancreas, simultaneous kidney-pancreas, liver, heart and lungs. We are also one of the world's biggest and busiest transplant centers, as our transplant team performs more than 420 transplants each year.

As part of the University of Maryland Medical Center, we utilize a multidisciplinary approach to patient care which exploits the enormous talent and broad resources of an outstanding academic medical/research center

The Transplant Program:

  • Optimizes living donor kidney registries to transplant patients sooner, with better matches
  • Offers adult living donor liver transplantation as an option to get patients transplanted sooner
  • Is among the nation's largest pancreas transplant programs 
  • Performs more liver transplants with better outcomes than any other program in the U.S. (per UHC 2012 data)
  • Is home to premier academic transplant surgeons who are reknowned for their pioneering work in thoracic and abdominal transplant surgery and research
  • Provides access to the latest advances in transplant technology and immunosuppressive medication therapy
  • Conducts NIH-funded research to improve patient outcomes and quality of life 
  • Is supported by a multidisciplinary team of medicine doctors, surgeons, skilled nurses and coordinators who specialize in managing patients before and after transplantation
