Know if a Union Jack Has Been Hung Upside Down

The Union Jack is the national flag of Great Britain. It looks very similar to the correctly hung way, even when upside-down. Read on to find out how to determine if the Union Jack is upside-down.

Edit Steps

  1. 1
Look at the top left corner of the flag. The Union Jack is very similar both upside down and the right way up so the easiest place to look is in the top left corner.
  2. 2
    The correctly hung flag.
    The correctly hung flag.
White stripes. Look at the white stripe on either side of the red cross. If the thicker part of the white stripe is on top of the red stripe, as shown in the picture to the right, then the Union Jack is the correct way around.
  3. 3
    The wrongly hung flag.
    The wrongly hung flag.
Wrong way. Look at the Union Jack picture on the right of this step. Still looking at the top left corner, you will notice that the thicker part of the white stripe is now on the bottom of the red cross. This is incorrect.
  4. 4
Flying the flag. If you are flying the flag to show pride in Great Britain, fly the Union Jack the correct way up. The Union Jack cannot be flown upside down if you rotate it, unlike the American flag for example. It can only be flown upside down if you flip the flag back to front. Luckily, this means that if the wind has blown your flag back to front, people probably won't notice that it's wrong. However, if the flag is static (stuck to a window, for example), It's illegal to fly the flag upside down. Please take note of this when proudly hanging the Great British flag.

Edit Tips

  • Teach other people how to fly the flag correctly too.
  • Never display the flag upside down, except as a distress signal.

Edit Warnings

  • Flying a Union Jack upside down on purpose is seen as disrespecting the Queen.
